―Kiteretsu‖ is one of the very old Japanese cartoon show, and it is running for over 35 years now, and it is very popular among children. When I was child I used to love this show, because it was full of fun, and full of scientific wonders. ―Kiteretsu‖ is all about a story of a little boy named Kiteretsu, who liked to invent new things by reading his grandfather secret book. And the whole story moves around him that how he helps people with his inventions, and also how he gets into troubles because of his inventions. When I was a child I used to like this story, and it motivated me to built new things on my own, and it was fun. I like the character of ―Korusuke‖, who is the little robot friend of Kiteretsu. Korusuke is very cute, and he is a little samurai robot, he always tries to help other people, and he always make disturbance in Kiteretsu’s inventions. Other characters are cute also like ―Miyoko,Tongari,Buta Gorilla,Mr.Benzo‖. All of them are cute, and this show is very much educational, and it helps to teach our children to make their own mark in life, and it also helps to show the true friendship. Overall this show is very nice for children. When I was kid, I like the show, and after 25 years I still love to watch this show, it never becomes old for me; it is the best cartoon ever. Rating: 8 AnimeBakaChan I really liked Naruto! It's my favorite anime and I've seen A LOT! • Creating Character Networks with Kinship Relations from Comics
International Journal of Service and Knowledge Management International Institute of Applied Informatics 2020, Vol. 4, No. 1, 1 - 26 Creating Character Networks with Kinship Relations from Comics Harumi Murakami *, Yusuke Nagaoka *, Ryota Kyogoku * Abstract To find and understand comic contents, we present an approach of creating character net- works with semantic relations from comics using the panels and speech balloons. First, we build a dataset that contains a comic’s characters and its words in speech balloons separated by the panels. Second, we extract the semantic relations among characters using the words in the speech balloons and panels. Third, we develop character networks by identifying the important characters using the frequencies of characters and their relatedness, and then we add semantic relations to these networks. As an initial step in finding semantic relations, we focus on kinship relations. We implement our approach and successfully build charac- ter networks from four popular Japanese comics. Finally, we evaluate our kinship relation extraction algorithms and the created character networks. Keywords: manga, comics, character networks, panels, speech balloons 1 Introduction The popularity of manga (Japanese comics) has increased worldwide [1]. Many manga have been translated into other languages, and a large number of manga are being published. For example, over 1 million copies of “Pokemon:´ The Electric Tale of Pikachu” issue #1 have been sold in the United States, making it the best-selling comic book there since 1993 [2]. Manga are usually serialized in magazines and later compiled in books. Some manga resemble long epics. For example, the popular manga “Naruto” was serialized in the magazine Weekly Shonen´ Jump from 1993 vol.

We in the West differentiate between “comics” and “graphic novels,” as the former conjures up images of bespectacled nerds lining up to purchase the latest issue of a Deadpool comic, and the latter brings to mind more serious material like Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir Fun Home or Art Spiegelman’s Maus, which, respectively, deal with heavy subjects like sexuality and the trauma of a Holocaust survivor.
