Civil War Veterans from Madison County, Florida (Continued from previous page) Third Florida Infantry, Company D (Wakulla Guards) 2nd Sgt John Livingston Inglis (b. January 1838 Scotland; m. Louisa; d. 6/2/1917 Jacksonville) immigrated to America and lived in the North before coming to Florida. He ran an iron foundry in Newport before the war and enlisted there 5/17/61. He was appointed Sgt of Sappers & Miners 8/23/61 and appears as private in late 1861. He was promoted 2nd Lt 5/8/62 and was twice wounded at Perryville 10/8/62. He gave the following account of his first baptism of fire at Perryville: “The 1st Brigade marched out and Oh Lord. Shells soon came tumbling amongst us. Many knocking men out of their places, wounded several. Rifle fire began in front .... we could see for miles in front of us, men getting enough of this, no way to hit back. Soon we saw our line advance and with the wild yells they cleared the field and crossed the dry creek bed. „Attention‟ range along our line; up jumped the 1st Brigade. Gen‟l Brown lined us up as if on Drill, drew his sword and with the command „Forward, Guide right, March‟ we started from a march to trot and yelling like the others. We were soon at a run, cut into the brambles, high as our heads, and in terrible bad order. Gen‟l Brown stopped to get the Third Fla. in line. Cussed us from being too quick. „Dress up or you will be cut to pieces in such order,‟ the men & officers soon were in line ... We again started and bullets began to whistle, men to fall fast. „Close up.‟... We relieved [a] Brigade who cheered us as they moved to the right... We lay down fire engaging the enemy, firing steady. Gen‟l Brown hit, also Col. Church. It hit his shoulder, collarbone broken. The groans of dying & the cries for water of the wounded were terrible. I am nearly killed, enemy giving way on all sides. We crawled through the field on our hands & knees. Gen‟l Miller in command of Brigade. Came to a fence, pushed it down, and was right at a battery, they are the 10th Ohio. Here it was close to each other ... we jumped on them, downed them, downed the guns, are chasing the 10th Ohio as they fell back but a few of them left. We had fought and driven them 6 miles. As night came on, we slept right in the line, amongst the dead & wounded.” He was wounded again at Murfreesboro and Chattanooga. He was promoted 2/19/63. At Resaca in mid 1864, , Captain Inglis and his men captured a Federal artillery battery. The Federal captain, who had manned his guns till he was captured, was John‟s brother. “John,” exclaimed the Federal captain, “you have captured the finest pieces of artillery in Sherman‟s army! I hated like the devil to lose those guns ....“ John was captured near Nashville 12/16/64 and released on oath 6/16/65 from Johnson‟s Island prison. He was 5‟8”, fair skin, light hair, blue eyes. After the war, he lived in Madison and described the Battle of Franklin: “The horror of that day is ever present with me. Nearly all the men so dear to me in the long, suffering years lay around me stark and stiff in the cold. I saw no sign of doubt or fear among them; they all went cheerfully to the slaughter prepared for them. Then came Nashville and the loss of most of the Florida Brigade.” He lived in Madison as a machinist in 1870 and served as Commander of the Florida Division, United Confederate Veteran. Historical Highlights of Pineland Missionary Baptist Church

Phillip Combs December 2003

The original site for the old Pineland Church was located on West Farm Road (CR-41) approximately 3 miles from its present location. The land for the old church site was donated/sold by George Washington, Kelly Washington, Sr. and his wife, Florida Nesbitt Washington for the sum of five dollars ($5) on December 1, 1903 (Recorded on 8-19-1916) The church trustees handling the business transactions and signing the deed were Milton Gillyard, Isaac Kemp, George Washington, Hamp and Ann Waller. The two story wooden structure was probably built around the turn of the 20th century on a hill that was easily seen by the surrounding community. Wood-burning stoves were used for heating and cooking and kerosene lanterns were used for lighting. There was a bell tower in the front steeple of the church and it was used to signal the community when it was time for church or school. The front of the church faced west with a beautiful set of rounded steps adorning the main entrance. The Old Pineland Church also served as a community school during the week. Students would arrive for school around 8am and finish around 3pm. The church bell was used to signal the beginning and end of school as well as the change of activities during the day. Meals were prepared at school by the teacher and the older girls in the class. All grades were held together in one area and when someone needed help, either the teacher or an older advanced student would give whatever assistance was needed. In the beginning there was not a well for water, so water had to be brought in from a nearby spring. The boys were assigned to do maintenance chores such as general cleaning of the building, raking the yard, getting water from the spring or the pitcher pump, which was added later, and getting firewood. School classes were held from approximately 1914 to 1954.

On February 23, 1960 land (2 lots) was purchased for the location of the second Pineland Church building from J. H. Plant in the Plant Subdivision area on County Camp Road. The Trustees that signed on behalf of the Church were Deacon Sam McGhee, Deacon Julius Frazier and Deacon Eddie Haynes.

On September 15, 1965 a mortgage for the Church in the amount of $3,320.00 was secured and signed by the following Trustees and Deacons: Deacon Sam McGhee, Deacon Julius FrazierDeacon Alexander Washington, Deacon Cornelius Cooks, Deacon Bennie Robinson, Deacon Bookie Bell and Deacon Alex Tillman.

The Church was granted 501 C3 status in the late 1990’s under the great leadership of Rev. Charlie Barfield. After months of planning and fundraising, work was started on the present 7,000 square foot sanctuary. The temple was completed and dedicated on the first Sunday of October in 2000. What a beautiful way to start the Millennium!

Some of the original founding families of the Pineland Church include but are not limited to the following: the Washingtons, the Richardsons, the Wilsons, the Wallers, the Fraziers, the Gillyards, and many others.

One of the greatest Mothers of the Pineland Church Family and the Community as well was Mother Ollie Mae Frazier. She was an active member of the Church for over seventy-five years. She holds the record for the longest membership for the Church. Her motto was “Love Ye One Another because Love is of God”, “I Don’t hate Nobody, I Love Everybody”. Her home-going left a void in the Pineland Family but her sweet, kind and gentle spirit lives on the hearts of many.

Presently, the oldest Church Mother is Mother Goldie Frazier. She has served in the church for 60 years and is still very active. She has helped prepare the communion table with beautiful linens for many years. She is also an excellent baker and is well known for her Red Velvet Cake. We are proud of her and pray that God will bless her with good health and long life.

The oldest surviving direct descendant of one of our founding families is Deacon Alexander Washington. As of 2003 he is still active in the church and prays very anointed prayers. We are thankful to God for the legacy of long Christian service.

We’ve come a long way, from a mighty long way We bore our burdens in the heat of the day Knowing that the Lord will make a way We’ve come a long way, from a mighty long way

RAILROADS

“It was just before the outbreak of hostilities between the North and South that the twin parallel ribbons of steel called a railroad first connected Madison County with the rest of the nation. The railroad replaced the slow and cumbersome stagecoaches and wagons, some of which operated in trains of five or six wagons over the primitive roads and trails of the time. Agricultural products, lumber, and all kinds of manufactured goods, including merchandise for the merchant’s stores, and travelers could now be carried between Madison County and the harbors and towns and cities around the country as the vast railroad systems continued to spread across the nation following the civil war. From the arrival of the railroads until the second half of the twentieth century the station, or depot as it was called, was the center of activity in every town.”

Kenneth Belknap Burnett A Railway Express Agent in Madison, FL

Kenneth Burnett was born March 1, 1915 in Madison County, FL. He grew up on a farm in Madison County. During World War II, he served 18 months in the Army Air Force Medical Corp in Augusta, GA, Dayton, OH, and San Antonio, TX. In the 1940’s Kenneth worked for the railroad on steam engine passenger trains, loading and unloading freight between stations in North and South Florida. While traveling he would group the packages for each stop along the way. When Mr. C. L. Geiger retired Kenneth took over his job as office manager for the Railway Express Agency in Madison, FL. As agent he would unload the rail car unto the express buggy and then into his truck. He soon found he could flag the train engineer to stop where he could back his truck up to the car and load the merchandise directly into his truck He would then deliver within the city limits. Outside the city limits the people would come and pick up their orders. At that time you could send a 55 lb box of fruit anywhere in the state of Florida for $1.55. He delivered all types of merchandise to the businesses in town. Being a big tease and always ribbing people, people were always looking for ways to get him back. One day he had to deliver a live monkey in a cage. He put the monkey in the front seat of the truck and this gave his friends plenty of opportunity to get him back. They would tease “So that’s your new replacement” etc. He loved to make people laugh. A quote from Russell Tedder: ”The person holding the job of station agent occupied a position of great responsibility in the community and enjoyed the respect of both the railroad and local citizens.” This was certainly true of Kenneth Burnett. Kenneth retired after working for the railroad for 33 years. December 4, 1936 Kenneth married Gertrude Elizabeth Pickels in Madison, FL. “Trudy” grew up in Madison County. After raising their children, Trudy worked with Kenneth for the Railroad Express Agency as clerk. She retired in 1979 after working for 17 years. Kenneth and Trudy had three children, Kenneth Frederick “Fred”, Emily Beth and Michael Lewis. “Little Mike” was born with a heart defect called a “blue baby.” He delighted in meeting the trains with his dad during his short life. He was an early recipient of a new heart surgery for “blue babies”: at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The procedure was developed and preformed by Dr. Alfred Blalock He died shortly before his fifth birthday, about six months after undergoing the heart surgery. Kenneth and Trudy were faithful members of the First Baptist Church of Madison. Ken served as deacon for many years and Trudy worked in the church nursery. Kenneth died December 30, 1998 and Trudy died October 8, 2004. They are buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Madison, FL.

Railroad Research

Begin your research for your railroad ancestor by first determining the location in which he or she lived at the time of employment with a railroad. Published histories and state archives or libraries can ascertain which railroad lines ran through the area at that time. Historical maps at the Library of Congress, American Memory Collection as well as the "Maps" section of Ancestry.com can be very helpful for this purpose.

The next step is to trace railroad mergers, acquisitions, and other dispositions that may have happened. Then locate the current administrative offices of the railroad and determine whether they still have employee records. They may have been donated to a library or archive or to a genealogical or historical society. In the case of a railroad's bankruptcy, bankruptcy court records can help you determine the disposition of the property, assets, and the company's records.

Tips - Look beyond the Railroad Retirement Board if you are seeking information about an ancestor who may have completed his or her career prior to 1937 when the Railroad Retirement Board was commissioned – the Board wii not have his/her records.

Stray from a single railroad. Chances are good that an ancestor who worked his/her whole working life, for example, with Penn Central, may have actually started with the New York Central or the New Haven and Hartford, and landed at Penn Central via consolidation. Nearly every railroad in the has such a fragmented history.

Think beyond engineers and ticket-takers. Other railroad jobs included track layers, gandy dancers, firemen, postal clerks, etc.

Contact employee groups and railroad historical societies. They may be able to assist you in finding former rail workers and getting messages to your ancestor’s former coworkers or they may have access to old newsletters that could give you clues or pictures of your ancestors.

The railroad Retirement Board will release information on deceased persons for genealogical research, but it will not release any information for living individuals without that person's written consent. Files for railroad employees are found only at the headquarters of the Railroad Retirement Board. There are several records that can be included in the package they send you. They charge a nonrefundable fee of $27.00 per record as of May/June 2005 payable in advance.

For more information about the Railroad Retirement Board, visit www.rrb.gov. As printed in Elmer/s Genealogy Library News March-April 2006
