It's good to—I'm supposed to look over here and not at you guys. [Laughter] But we got six Governors with us today—Democrats and Republicans, are—and they're meeting the moment: Governor Mills of Maine, Governor DeWine of Ohio, Governor Cox of Utah, Governor Walz of Minnesota, Governor Baker of Massachusetts, and Governor Lujan Grisham of New Mexico. And it's great to connect with you all. You know, last week, I provided an update on where we were with our vaccination program and what comes next. And I said our goal, by July the 4th, is to have 70 percent of adult Americans with at least one shot and 160 million Americans fully vaccinated. And that's a pretty huge goal, I acknowledge that, but you've done a remarkable job. But if we succeed, we're going to be able to take a serious step toward a return to normalcy by Independence Day, which is a goal that was not arbitrarily, but based on talking to the docs— thought if we did what we'd had to do, we could meet. And there's a lot of work to do, though, to get there. But I believe we can get there. And part of the reason I'm so confident is because of—[laughter]—your leadership, the Governors, and your partnership with us. The Governors with us today and their counterparts have been instrumental in helping us make progress and—more quickly than anyone would have thought.

In the West, Opposing Natural Gas Is Tricky

IN THE WEST, OPPOSING NATURAL GAS IS TRICKY By Sammy Roth his week, the Los Angeles Times published a story I’ve been working on for months. It’s about efforts by fossil fuel companies and their allies to claim the moral high ground by casting the industry as an ally of communities of color, T even as its products fuel a global crisis that disproportionately harms people who aren’t white. It’s a nuanced story that focuses on defenders of oil and gas, examining who funds them and scrutinizing their claims about fossil fuels being good for the pocketbooks of people of color. I took a hard look at groups including United Latinos Vote and Western States and Tribal Nations, and companies including Sempra Energy and Dominion Energy. I hope you’ll read the story and share it, and let me know what you think. As much information as we packed into the piece — which was probably a bit longer than my editors would have liked — there was plenty of stuff that didn’t make the final version, not because it wasn’t newsworthy but because it didn’t have to do with the question of how the fossil fuel economy affects people of color. Fortunately, I’ve also got this newsletter. So here are a few other things I learned in the course of my reporting, all dealing with natural gas and the energy transition in the Amer- ican West.
