Scandals in sport AN ACCOMPANIMENT TO ON THE TAKE TONY JOEL AND MATHEW TURNER Contemporary Histories Research Group, Deakin University February 2020 he events that enveloped the Victorian Football League (VFL) generally and the Carlton Football Club especially in September 1910 were not unprecedented. Gambling was entrenched in TMelbourne’s sporting landscape and rumours about footballers “playing dead” to fix the results of certain matches had swirled around the city’s ovals, pubs, and back streets for decades. On occasion, firmer allegations had even forced authorities into conducting formal inquiries. The Carlton bribery scandal, then, was not the first or only time when footballers were interrogated by officials from either their club or governing body over corruption charges. It was the most sensational case, however, and not only because of the guilty verdicts and harsh punishments handed down. As our new book On The Take reveals in intricate detail, it was a particularly controversial episode due to such a prominent figure as Carlton’s triple premiership hero Alex “Bongo” Lang being implicated as the scandal’s chief protagonist. Indeed, there is something captivating about scandals involving professional athletes and our fascination is only amplified when champions are embroiled, and long bans are sanctioned. As a by-product of modernity’s cult of celebrity, it is not uncommon for high-profile sportspeople to find themselves exposed by unlawful, immoral, or simply ill-advised behaviour whether it be directly related to their sporting performances or instead concerning their personal lives. Most cases can be categorised as somehow relating to either sex, illegal or criminal activity, violence, various forms of cheating (with drugs/doping so prevalent it can be considered a separate category), prohibited gambling and match-fixing.

  • Towards a New Dynamic Measure of Competitive Balance: a Study Applied to Australia's Two Major Professional 'Football'
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Research Papers in Economics ECONOMIC ANALYSIS & POLICY, VOL. 39 NO. 3, DECEMBER 2009 Towards a New Dynamic Measure of Competitive Balance: A Study Applied to Australia’s Two Major Professional ‘Football’ Leagues* Liam J. A. Lenten School of Economics and Finance, La Trobe University, Victoria, 3086, Australia (Email: [email protected]) Abstract: A new measure for competitive balance between seasons is proposed, which takes the form of a mobility gain function, based on each team’s win ratios from the current and previous seasons. This ‘dynamic’ function measures competitive balance within a one- period change framework. While it is not suggested that this measure replace useful existing within-season measures, such as the widely used actual-to-idealised standard deviation (ASD/ISD) ratio, this measure does overcome one of the shortcomings of within-season measures – that is, the ability to pick up uncertainty of outcome from season to season, rather than merely from round-to-round. Hence, it is suggested that this measure could be used in conjunction with within-season measures in time-series analysis. An application to Australia’s Australian Football League (AFL) and National Rugby League (NRL) over a century of data reveals numerous interesting comparisons. I. INTRODUCTION Competitive balance (CB) refers simply to the degree of evenness in sports leagues. However, the idea of measuring and quantifying CB is far from clear-cut, given the diversity of defining it precisely. Most notably, complications arise when one considers the distinction between the three often-cited dimensions of CB.

  • Rugby-Bot: Utilizing Multi-Task Learning & Fine-Grained Features
RUGBY-BOT:UTILIZING MULTI-TASK LEARNING & FINE-GRAINED FEATURES FOR RUGBY LEAGUE ANALYSIS APREPRINT Matthew Holbrook Jennifer Hobbs Patrick Lucey STATS, LLC STATS, LLC STATS, LLC Chicago, IL Chicago, IL Chicago, IL [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] October 17, 2019 ABSTRACT Sporting events are extremely complex and require a multitude of metrics to accurate describe the event. When making multiple predictions, one should make them from a single source to keep consistency across the predictions. We present a multi-task learning method of generating multiple predictions for analysis via a single prediction source. To enable this approach, we utilize a fine-grain representation using fine-grain spatial data using a wide-and-deep learning approach. Additionally, our approach can predict distributions rather than single point values. We highlighted the utility of our approach on the sport of Rugby League and call our prediction engine “Rugby-Bot”. Keywords Mixture Density Network · Multi-Task Learning · Embeddings · Rugby League · DVOA 1 Introduction For the past decade in sports analytics, the holy grail has been to find “the one best metric” which can best capture the performance of players and teams through the lens of winning. For example, expected metrics such as wins-above replacement (WAR) in baseball [1], expected point value (EPV) and efficiency metrics in basketball [2, 3] and expected goal value in soccer [4] are used as the gold-standard in team and player analysis. In American Football, Defense- Adjusted Value Over Average (DVOA) [5], is perhaps the most respected and utilized advanced metric in the NFL which utilizes both an expected value and efficiency metric, and analyzes the value of a play compared to expected for every play and also normalizes for team, drive and game context.
