Camera Obscura Sculptural Installation "Vorti-Scope" While walking along the Green this summer, stop and discover downtown Fredericton’s “Camera Obscura” entitled “Vorti-Scope”; a community arts project lead by local artist Greg Charlton in partnership with edVentures, the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. This unique sculptural installation, a metallic silver building with a double spiral ramp, reveals real-time views of its surroundings. Follow one of the spiral ramps and step inside the chamber to see startling 360-degree magical views of Fredericton’s picturesque riverscape projected onto a large circular viewing table. This self-directed, interactive optical device is located on the south-side walking trail on the riverside of the Carleton Street pedestrian bridge and is open for the enjoyment of all. Walk-in Camera Obscuras flourished in areas of scenic beauty during the 19th century and shared an amazing history, linked to astronomy, dating back to 5th century BCE. This Camera illustrates the optical phenomenon that is at the root of contemporary photographic culture. The double spiral ramp of this Camera Obscura, or Wunderkammer (wonder room) is designed to collect viewers, memories, educate and delight, and is open from 9 AM to 9 PM daily until September 19. Don’t miss this very special experience. For more info, go to Vorti-scope/ facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Vorti-scope/127777477240847 or contact Drew Gilbert, at 440-0578. The project leader owes a great debt to the project collaborators who enthusiastically aided in the realization of this project: Drew Gilbert, Photographer; John Leroux, Architect; and John Morgan, of Fabinex. A special thanks goes to John Morgan and his team at Fabinex; the local Heritage Restoration Construction company that specializes in custom display and interpretive exhibits. This project is generously funded through the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Cultural Capitals of Canada, the City of Fredericton and Arts NB. 2. Hey Rosetta! at the Boyce Farmer's Market July 22 Hey Rosetta! Thursday July 22, 2010 at The Fredericton Boyce Farmer’s Market -- presented by The Capital Complex. St. Johns’ Newfoundland based band Hey Rosetta! are set to return to Fredericton. Since their performance at Harvest Jazz and Blues (2009) in the Blues Tent, this ECMA award winning group has traveled the globe in support of their acclaimed release Into Your Lungs (and around your heart and on through your blood) released through Sonic Entertainment. Recorded in the dead of winter in two East Coast harbour towns with producer and singer-songwriter Hawksley Workman, Into Your Lungs began with a beautiful naivety and confidence. An 'off the stage' feel and vigour reminiscent of the bands powerful live performances rooted the recording sessions and everything was bred from and expanded from there. With four MusicNL Awards and a couple of ECMA nominations, a Polaris Prize Nomination in 2009 and a new record in the works Hey Rosetta! is an act not to be missed. Ticket Info: $25 in advance (plus service fee) and go on sale Monday July 14, 2010 at Reads News Stand and Backstreet Records in Fredericton, NB. Online at www.heyrosetta.eventbrite.com. Hooded Fang and Maylee Todd Fredericton performance July 24 Two of Toronto's favourite bands are joining forces (and sharing vans) to tour the Maritimes from July 21-27. Hooded Fang is an eight-piece pop orchestra. In the two years since their first concert on the tiny stage of a friend's bar in Toronto, Hooded Fang has released a critically acclaimed EP and played shows that include Pop Montreal and Canadian Music Week showcases, an appearance on CBC Radio's Q, and opening slots for the Born Ruffians, Bishop Allen and Malajube. The band will be playing tunes from their upcoming full-length album (to be released this September), which offers more of what the band does best: shamelessly plundering musical genres in the service of crafting the perfect pop tune. 3 A long-time fixture on the Toronto indie scene (Henry Faberge and the Adorables, Woodhands), Maylee Todd is touring her first solo album Choose Your Own Adventure.
