Camera Obscura Sculptural Installation "Vorti-Scope" While walking along the Green this summer, stop and discover downtown Fredericton’s “Camera Obscura” entitled “Vorti-Scope”; a community arts project lead by local artist Greg Charlton in partnership with edVentures, the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. This unique sculptural installation, a metallic silver building with a double spiral ramp, reveals real-time views of its surroundings. Follow one of the spiral ramps and step inside the chamber to see startling 360-degree magical views of Fredericton’s picturesque riverscape projected onto a large circular viewing table. This self-directed, interactive optical device is located on the south-side walking trail on the riverside of the Carleton Street pedestrian bridge and is open for the enjoyment of all. Walk-in Camera Obscuras flourished in areas of scenic beauty during the 19th century and shared an amazing history, linked to astronomy, dating back to 5th century BCE. This Camera illustrates the optical phenomenon that is at the root of contemporary photographic culture. The double spiral ramp of this Camera Obscura, or Wunderkammer (wonder room) is designed to collect viewers, memories, educate and delight, and is open from 9 AM to 9 PM daily until September 19. Don’t miss this very special experience. For more info, go to Vorti-scope/ facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Vorti-scope/127777477240847 or contact Drew Gilbert, at 440-0578. The project leader owes a great debt to the project collaborators who enthusiastically aided in the realization of this project: Drew Gilbert, Photographer; John Leroux, Architect; and John Morgan, of Fabinex. A special thanks goes to John Morgan and his team at Fabinex; the local Heritage Restoration Construction company that specializes in custom display and interpretive exhibits. This project is generously funded through the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Cultural Capitals of Canada, the City of Fredericton and Arts NB. 2. Summer Shapes Workshop Series July 22 The Summer Shapes Workshop Series runs from July 8 to August 19 at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. The workshops, instructed by members of the NB Crafts Council, will provide participants an experience of Fine Craft practices and processes. We are partnering with other community organizations for a portion of the series in order to offer the experience to people who might not otherwise have this opportunity. Our partners this summer include Fredericton Arts & Learning, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, and the Multicultural Association of Fredericton. We invite you to join us to learn techniques in metal, clay, textiles, and more! Registration fee is $5 per person and materials are included. Please register in advance by contacting Monica Lacey at 450-8989 or [email protected] All the workshops run on Thursdays from 1-4 PM at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. Hey Rosetta! at the Boyce Farmer's Market July 22 Hey Rosetta! Thursday July 22, 2010 at The Fredericton Boyce Farmer’s Market -- presented by The Capital Complex. St. Johns’ Newfoundland based band Hey Rosetta! are set to return to Fredericton. Since their performance at Harvest Jazz and Blues (2009) in the Blues Tent, this ECMA award winning group has traveled the globe in support of their acclaimed release Into Your Lungs (and around your heart and on through your blood) released through Sonic Entertainment. Recorded in the dead of winter in two East Coast harbour towns with producer and singer-songwriter Hawksley Workman, Into Your Lungs began with a beautiful naivety and confidence. An 'off the stage' feel and vigour reminiscent of the bands powerful live performances rooted the recording sessions and everything was bred from and expanded from there. With four MusicNL Awards and a couple of ECMA nominations, a Polaris Prize Nomination in 2009 and a new record in the works Hey Rosetta! is an act not to be missed. Ticket Info: $25 in advance (plus service fee) and go on sale Monday July 14, 2010 at Reads News Stand and Backstreet Records in Fredericton, NB. Online at www.heyrosetta.eventbrite.com. Highlights of the festival's first week include: Alden: a found play by Rick Merrill. A staged reading of a play in development about the life of poet Alden Nowlan, as told entirely through his own words in the form of poems, letters, interviews, and conversations. July 23, 8 PM, Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Demolitics, by Ryan Griffith. A rural New Brunswick cabinet minister becomes the victim of a friendly hostage taking at the hands of his constituents and is forced to defend his government's policies, in a play that is both a hilarious dissection of New Brunswick's political culture and a passionate plea for political reform. July 24-27, 8 PM, Memorial Hall, UNB. Special pay-what-you-can performance Monday, July 26, followed by a panel discussion featuring representatives of NB's political parties chaired by UNB Political Science professor Paul Howe. Featuring Body in the Barracks by John Ball, The Peanut Butter Formula by Dennis Poirier, Sadie Meets Her Match by Kathy Mac, Train Ride by Michael Milech, and Clown College by Chris Nyarady. July 26-30, noon, Barracks Square. Also taking the stage in the festival's second week: Acting Out: the two winners of the NB Acts one-act playwriting contest (Hardwire by Chris Fulton and Christmas Break by Michael Milech) presented as a twin-bill. July 30-August 1, 8 PM, Memorial Hall, UNB and Play Out Loud: free readings of four new plays in development. July 28-29, 8 PM, Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Tickets $15/$10, with some performances pay-what-you-can. For full show and ticket details, visit www.nbacts.com or phone 458-7406. 6. Hooded Fang and Maylee Todd Fredericton performance July 24 Two of Toronto's favourite bands are joining forces (and sharing vans) to tour the Maritimes from July 21-27. Hooded Fang is an eight-piece pop orchestra. In the two years since their first concert on the tiny stage of a friend's bar in Toronto, Hooded Fang has released a critically acclaimed EP and played shows that include Pop Montreal and Canadian Music Week showcases, an appearance on CBC Radio's Q, and opening slots for the Born Ruffians, Bishop Allen and Malajube. The band will be playing tunes from their upcoming full-length album (to be released this September), which offers more of what the band does best: shamelessly plundering musical genres in the service of crafting the perfect pop tune. 3 A long-time fixture on the Toronto indie scene (Henry Faberge and the Adorables, Woodhands), Maylee Todd is touring her first solo album Choose Your Own Adventure.

ACTIVITY REPORT 2014-15 10TH ANNIVERSARY PROJECT ELAN celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2014 and received project funding from the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage for a number of special activities. The first was to feature trailblazers in building Quebec’s current dynamic English- language arts community from the sparsely populated, marginal scene of the 1970s and 80s. Three panel discussions were presented in collaboration with POP Montreal and Expozine: The Montreal Formula: Thinking outside the box for survival in Montreal arts (POP Montreal) with Albert Nerenberg (host; filmmaker and laughologist), Murray Lightburn (the Dears), Krista Muir (Lederhosen Lucil), and visual artist J.C. Little; Literary Legacies: A Montreal Story (POP Montreal) with host Katia Grubisic (writer and translator), Linda Leith, founder of Blue Metropolis Foundation, and Marianne Ackerman, founder of the bilingual theatre company Theatre 1774 and Rover Arts; and Montreal Blooming: From Backwater to Music Hotbed (Expozine) with Howard Bilerman (legendary Montreal producer, former drummer for Arcade Fire), Kevin Komoda (Rational Youth), Ryhna Thompson (Envision Management), and musician Molly Sweeney. For our 10th anniversary year, ELAN co-produced Schmoozers with partners from each of the major artistic disciplines: April in collaboration with the Quebec Writers' Federation; June in collaboration with the St-Ambroise Montreal International Fringe Festival; October in collaboration with the Montreal Film Group; and December at McGill's Schulich School of Music, with a focus on students. Eastern Bloc was selected as the venue for ELAN's 10th anniversary event because it is a well- equipped visual and media arts centre. A photo retrospective of ELAN's 10-year history was projected on one wall while the Wonderwall, created at three stations where guests were photographed as they arrived, was projected on another.

  • The Creative Economy and the English Speaking Communities in Quebec
The Creative Economy and the English Speaking Communities in Quebec REPORT SUBMITTED TO INDUSTRY CANADA BY TRACY ZHANG, PH.D.(SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR INSTITUTE, CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY), WITH AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY PREPARED BY AURELIA ROMAN, M.A. ON BEHALF OF THE QUEBEC ENGLISH - SPEAKING COMMUNITIES RESEARCH NETWORK (QUESCREN) QUESCREN is a joint initiative of the Canadian Institute for Research on Linguistic Minorities and Concordia University's School of Extended Learning MONTREAL, 2012-03-31 The Creative Economy and English-speaking Communities in Quebec EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Creative Economy and English-Speaking Communities in Quebec presents preliminary research results based on a focus group, private key informant interviews, and bibliographical research. It demonstrates that the concepts of the creative economy are useful in charting cultural and economic development for the English-speaking communities in Quebec (ESCQ). The English-speaking population in Quebec forms the largest provincial Official Language Minority Community in Canada. In recent decades, the composition of this population has become increasingly complex and multicultural. Parallel to this demographic shift, the influence of English-language Quebec culture has also evolved. English-speakers are said to have a high participation rate in the arts, culture and heritage sectors. In this context, organizations from these sectors are increasingly involved in supporting the socioeconomic development of the ESCQ. This report reflects growing concerns on the part of representatives of some of these organizations who participated in the study over how to apply the creative economy theory to generate effective models of cultural-economic development for the ESCQ. Due to the preliminary nature of the research involved in this study, coupled with the range of understandings about the creative economy reflected in the participants' comments and our annotated bibliography, the report does not recommend a single definition of "creative economy".

Inside Out: The Internationalization of the Canadian Independent Recording Sector Richard Sutherland Mount Royal University AbStRAct This article examines the growing internationalization of English Canada’s in - dependent sound recording sector, largely defined by Canadian ownership. Although Canada’s music industry has had considerable links with the global music business for decades, the in - dependent sector remained focused on the production of recordings by Canadian artists for sale in the domestic market. Recently, the links between Canadian music and Canadian- owned record companies have weakened, such that each is less reliant on the other. The article discusses the ways in which this dissociation has occurred within the context of the transformation of the global music industry over the past 15 years and considers the impli - cations for future Canadian music industry policy.

FA Annual 2013 – 2014 C T OR Repor t We acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage Canada Music Fund and of Canada's Private Radio Broadcasters. 2 Message From the Chair We are extremely FACTOR 2013–2014 FACTOR proud of the role we play in supporting Canadian musical artists Message From the Chair 3 After serving on FACTOR’s Board of Directors for the past six years, it is with pride that I write my last message as Chair. It is remarkable to think how much FACTOR has changed since I first became involved with the organization. Over this time, FACTOR has made a number of important improvements and transforma- tional changes in the way it administers funding for the Canadian independent music industry. These include efforts to build staff expertise to ensure consistent, fair and transparent funding; to develop a res- ponsible investment strategy for surplus funding that ensures long-term 2013–2014 FACTOR funding stability; the modernization of our application processes and client services with investments in digital infrastructure; and, most importantly, a re-design of our programs to better reflect how the industry is monetizing recorded music and to ensure investments are made in areas where they will have the greatest potential to be com- mercially meaningful. FACTOR’s ability to successfully navigate the dramatic changes shaping the Canadian independent music industry is due in large part to the stable funding it receives from the public-private partnership shared between Canada’s private radio broadcasters and the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage.
