Those students were required to wear masks and receive a negative PCR test twice weekly. For the 2021-22 academic year, students only needed proof of vac- cination and a negative PCR test to return to campus, without further COVID testing. Unvaccinated students who were granted exception from the vaccine requirement have stricter guidelines. Le jeu d’échecs connaît un regain d'intérêt grâce en partie à The Queen's Gambit, une série de Netflix explorant l'ascension d'une jeune Américaine au rang de championne du monde. C'est un grand spectacle, et il parvient également à éviter tout commentaire sociologique réel sur ce que cela signifie pour Beth Harmon d'être une femme dans ce monde. Cependant, dans le monde réel, en tant que femme fortement impliquée dans la scène des échecs, les politiques de genre sont beaucoup plus difficiles à ignorer. Il est difficile d'être précis sur le nombre de joueuses actives, mais la plupart des estimations se situent entre 5 et 15%. Hou Yifan est la seule femme du top 100 de la FIDE, à la 86e place. Judit Polgar, la joueuse la mieux classée de tous les temps, était numéro huit en 2005. Il n'y a jamais eu de championne du monde.     Atlantic Chess News It is no secret that women have long been underrepresented in chess, es- pecially at the highest levels. At last year’s Team, some of the top young female chess talents in the Tri-State Area teamed up and nearly took down the whole tournament. While SIG Calls edged them out by half a point to win clear fi rst (more on page 3), the girls’ 5.5/6 tally is still a super impres- sive score in the biggest Team to date. This elite group of titled teens is made up of WFM Martha Samadashvili, WIM Evelyn Zhu, WFM Yassi Ehsani, and WFM Ellen Wang (in board order). All numbering in the top 50 women in the US, they each have many personal accolades. They are all several-year veterans of the Team, though this is the fi rst time they played togther. The team was organized with help from Sophia Rhode, who is one of the top organizers in the state of New York (from which all four girls hail). There was a consensus that, duirng the tourna- ment, they weren’t particularly focused on the fact that they were playing as an all-girls team since there was winning to be done, but they all shared Yassi’s sentiment that “... it was nice to be on an all female team for once.” The team gained a lot of publicity for their performance, and they channeled that into a series of “Unruly Queens” events. These included tourna- ments and camps run in conjunction with the USCF which aimed to attract more young women to the game.

Stephen Wright HERE AND THERE Canadian Championship and Zonal (April 18-22) Last December the CFC Directors approved a bid from Aris Marghetis to hold the next four Canadian Championships in Kingston, Ontario, and the first of these events has just taken place over the Easter weekend. Held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in part through contacts made at the CSTA (Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance) Conference in Halifax in March 2018, the Championship served as the centrepiece for a chess festival, with additional sections for those rated below 2200. 2019 is also a Zonal year, meaning there were qualification spots for the World Cup and American Continental Championship plus the chance to obtain direct titles. Round one, Joshua Doknjas versus Evgeny Bareev (photo by Victoria Jung-Doknjas) Thirty-six players participated in the Championship Section, including GMs Evgeny Bareev, Kaiqi Yang, and Aman Hambleton, WGM Qiyu Zhou, and former champions IM Nikolay Noritsyn and IM Artiom Samsonkin. There were two players from BC, Joshua Doknjas and Kevin Gentes, the former receiving financial support from the BCCF due to his high finish in the last BC Closed. Evgeny Bareev was the obvious favourite, but the former world number four (2003) suffered the tournament's biggest upset in the very first round at the hands of – Joshua Doknjas! It was Nikolay Noritsyn who made the most of the early going and after six rounds was in clear first with 5.5 points, having defeated Yang and Samsonkin.
