BONAVENTURE’S THREE-FOLD WAY TO GOD R. E. Houser Though he became Minister General of the Franciscan Order in 1257, Bonaventure’s heart never left the University of Paris, and during his generalate he delivered three sets of “collations” or university sermons at Paris. On 10 December 1270 Itienne Tempier, bishop of Paris, had condemned certain erroneous propositions. Copyright © 2005 The Center for Christian Ethics 37 A Theologian’s Brief This statement on the place of the human embryo in the Christian tradition and the theological principles for evaluating its moral status was submitted to the House of Lords Select Committee on Stem Cell Research on June 1, 2001, by an ad hoc group of Christian theolo- gians from the Anglican, Catholic, Orthodox, and Reformed traditions. BASIS OF THIS SUBMISSION 1. In a multi-cultural and multi-religious society, it is appropriate to take account not only of secular arguments concerning the place of the hu- man embryo but also of arguments expressed in the religious language of some sections of the community. It is particularly important to understand the Christian tradition in this regard because of the place Christianity has had in shaping the moral understanding of many citizens in this country, and because this tradition has already been invoked in the context of public debate.1 2. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology (Research Purposes) Regu- lations 2001 greatly expand the purposes for which research using human embryos can take place, and thus, if implemented, will inevitably lead to a massive increase in the use and destruction of embryos. The Select Com- mittee has expressed its wish not “to review the underlying basis of the 1990 Act”;2 however, the ethical and legal issues surrounding “the Regula- tions as they now stand” cannot adequately be addressed without consid- ering the moral status of the human embryo. Similarly, the “regulatory framework established by the 1990 Act” cannot operate effectively if it is flawed in principle. -

THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA An Hexaëmeral Reading of Bonaventure’s Breviloquium A DISSERTATION Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Theology and Religious Studies In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Doctor of Philosophy By Daniel Wade McClain Washington, D.C. 2016 An Hexaëmeral Reading of Bonaventure’s Breviloquium Daniel Wade McClain, Ph.D. Director: Joshua Benson, Ph.D. This dissertation examines the structure of Bonaventure’s Breviloquium, a brief synthesis of theology produced in 1257 at the end of his tenure as Master at the University of Paris.1 Previous studies of this text have complicated its structure by emphasizing a distinction in genre between the prologue and the “body,” and by reading the “body” either in terms of the Platonic scheme of procession and return, or in terms of origin, procession, and return, which is a scheme supplied by Bonaventure himself.2 While attending to Bonaventure’s unique theology of the Trinity and Christ as 1 Cf. Richard Simon Critical History of the Text of the New Testament New Testament Tools, Studies and Documents New Testament Tools, Studies, and Documents (NTTSD) combines two series, New Testament Tools and Studies (NTTS) and Studies and Documents (SD). The former was founded by Bruce M. Metzger in 1965 and edited by him until 1993, when Bart D. Ehrman joined him as co-editor. The latter series was founded by Kirsopp and Silva Lake in 1935, edited by them until the death of Kirsopp Lake in 1946, then briey by Silva Lake and Carsten Høeg (1955), followed by Jacob Geerlings (until 1969), by Irving Alan Sparks (until 1993), and nally by Eldon Jay Epp (until 2007). The new series will promote the publication of primary sources, reference tools, and critical studies that advance the understanding of the New Testament and other early Christian writings and writers into the fourth century. Emphases of the two predecessor series will be retained, including the textual history and transmission of the New Testament and related literature, relevant manuscripts in various languages, methodologies for research in early Christianity. The outcome of this debate (and the Condemnations of 1277) led to the modern separation of faith and reason. Rather than seeing voluntarism and nominalism as the cause of the modern separation of faith and reason, and theology and philosophy, it will be suggested that it is actually the other way around: the Bonaventurean response indirectly resulted in the growing separation of faith and reason, which led, in turn, to voluntarism. It is important not to confuse the Thomist and Franciscan responses, as sometimes happens in recent scholarship, including in the work of Gavin D’Costa, as will be shown. Both the Thomist and the Bonaventurean approaches are legitimate resources to respond to the (post)-secular context in which we find ourselves, and the former should not be reduced to the latter. Along the many and complex problems with which the history of Europe in the Middle Ages―and especially the earlier period of the Middle Ages―teems is the character of the intellectual heritage transmitted to medieval men from classical and later Roman imperial times. The topic has engaged the attention of many scholars, amongst them men of the greatest eminence, so that much which fifty years ago was still dark and uncertain is now clear and beyond dispute. Yet the old notions and misconceptions die hard, especially in books approximating to the text book class. In a recently published volume on the Middle Ages intended for university freshmen there is much that is excellent and abreast of the most recent investigations; but the sections on early medieval education and scholarship seem to show that the author has never read anything on that subject later than Mullinger’s Schools of Charles the Great. Even in larger works it is not uncommon to find the author merely repeating what the last man before him has said, without inquiring into controversial matters for himself. Years ago Ludwig Traube pointed the way to a correct estimate of Greek studies [p.70] in Western Europe during the earlier Middle Ages, and subsequent research, while it has greatly added to the evidence collected by him, has only fortified his general conclusions. -

ORTHODOXY AND HERESY IN EARLIEST CHRISTIANITY by Walter Bauer 1934 [Second German Edition by Georg Strecker] OPINIONS Walter Bauer’s Orthodoxy and Heresy has established itself as a classic refutation of the "myth" that "in the beginning" orthodoxy was there first and heresy was a deviation from the norm. Whatever one thinks of the thesis, one cannot bypass Bauer on early heresy any more that one can bypass Bultmann on Form Criticism or Harnack on the development of dogma. Today, it remains a good introduction to Christianity at the end of the first century and the beginning of the second century. Gerald Christianson Professor of Church History Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary This brilliant and pioneering monograph inaugurated a new era of scholarship in the study of the New Testament and Christian origins, especially in America. It argued that early Christianity did not begin with a unified orthodox belief, from which heresies broke off at a later time. Rather, Bauer demonstrated that diversity stood at the beginning, while an orthodox church emerged only after long controversies during the early centuries. During recent decades, the investigation of newly discovered texts, such as the Gnostic Library of Nag Hammadi in Egypt, have fully confirmed Bauer’s insights. There may be numerous details, which scholars today would see differently than Walter Bauer, whose word was first published in Germany sixty years ago. Nevertheless, Bauer’s book has remained the foundation for all modern scholarship in this field, and it is must- reading for all who want to explore early Christian Communities. It is still challenging, fresh, fascinating, and thought-provoking -- without any question of the truly great masterpieces of New Testament scholarship. -

He finished this work over two decades later, before he completed the Historia Ecclesiastica in 731.1 The surviving manuscripts seem to suggest several stages of composition and therefore may be grouped into different recensions. In listing the manuscripts, Laistner only mentioned two recensions, one consisting of two books (ending at I.2316, corresponding to what is now regarded as the second recension) and one of four books (as in Jones’ edition, ending at IV.1761, corresponding to the third recension), though he notes that one manuscript ends at I.1224, ‘transmutabitur’.2 In his edition, Jones lists two more manuscripts which end at the same place (that is, I.1224), and he suggests that this forms another recension, the first.3 All the recensions we have are prefaced with the Epistola ad Accam , in which Bede said that he had written two books about Genesis, commenting as far as Gen.
