Prayer Journal March 2019
Prayer Journal March 2019 March 2019 Dear Southside Family, Welcome to Practicing God’s Presence in Prayer! This Journal has been prayerfully prepared to assist you and your family on the journey. There are 5 daily lessons for each of the three weeks (I think that still equals 15!). You can do them individually, with your spouse or as a family. You’ll need your Bible, a pen (or favorite electronic device) and a heart to find out more about prayer. If these truths are discovered, understood and applied, our prayer lives can be transformed, our spiritual growth can be accelerated and our lives and relationships changed! God is speaking. He desires to be more than a part of our life – He is life itself. May we learn how we can regularly, intentionally remain in His presence throughout the day through an attitude of prayer. Each day, read the suggested Bible passages and answer the questions. Use the KidConnect Corner with your kids or grandkids. Space has been given for you to record your thoughts and impressions from the Lord each day. Customize the content and make this fit for you and your family. Each day’s lesson will take about 20 minutes. Our goal is to become stronger in our walk with God by developing healthy spiritual habits. Don’t be overwhelmed. Take the Practicing God’s Presence in Prayer experience one day at a time! If you miss a day or two, don’t panic! Make them up when you have the opportunity. It’s my hope and intent that our whole Southside family (children, youth and adults) will be discussing the topics in KidConnect, Home Groups, the Sunday morning messages and in our homes. -

WEEK 15 HOW TO PRAY ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS WEEKLY BIBLE READING: James 5:13-20 (NIV) 13Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. 14Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. 17Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. 19My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, 20remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins. How To Pray About Your Problems James 5: 13-20 Day 1 PRAYING THROUGH ADVERSITY James 5: 13 Are any among you suffering? They should keep on praying about it. And those who have reason to be thankful should continually sing praises to the Lord. James has talked a lot about speech and the control of our tongue. -
Journal of Academic Perspectives
Journal of Academic Perspectives Religion, Politics, and Public Discourse: Bruce Springsteen and the Public Church of Roll Frederick L. Downing, Professor of Philosophy & Religious Studies, Valdosta State University and Jonathan W. Downing, Co-Director, Screaming Shih-Tzu Productions Abstract The thesis of this paper is that Bruce Springsteen’s art participates in a musical public square in which the outsider can come up close and overhear a dialogue that has been going on for centuries. Following the work of Robert Detweiler on religion and public life, this paper starts from the premise that the bard’s music, like literature, creates a type of public square or a form of public discourse where urgent matters of human survival, like the nature and nurture of a just state, are expressed, a call for social justice can be heard, and faith and hope for the future can be assimilated. Using the theory of Martin Marty on religion and civic life, the paper further describes Springsteen’s work as the creation of a “public church” beyond sectarian demand which is open to all and approximates, in his language, a true “land of hopes and dreams.” The paper uses the theory of Walter Brueggemann on the ancient church idea to demonstrate the nature and dimension of Springsteen’s “public church.” Using Brueggemann’s theory, Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball album is shown to have both a prophetic and priestly function. As a writer and performer, Springsteen demonstrates on this album and on the Wrecking Ball tour that he not only speaks truth to power, but attempts to create a sense of alternative vision and alternative community to the unjust status quo. -

Meet Me in the Land of Hope and Dreams Influences of the Protest Song Tradition on the Recent Work of Bruce Springsteen (1995-2012)
Ghent University Faculty of Arts and Philosophy Meet me in the Land of Hope and Dreams Influences of the protest song tradition on the recent work of Bruce Springsteen (1995-2012) Supervisor: Paper submitted in partial Dr. Debora Van Durme fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of “Master in de Taal- en Letterkunde: Nederlands- Engels” by Michiel Vaernewyck May 2014 Word of thanks The completion of this master dissertation would not have been possible without the help of several people that have accompanied me on this road. First of all, thank you to my loving parents for their support throughout the years. While my father encouraged me to listen to an obscure, dusty vinyl record called The River, he as well as my mother taught me the love for literature and music. Thanks for encouraging me to express myself through writing and my own music, which is a gift that money just cannot buy. Secondly, thanks to my great friends of the past few years at Ghent University, although they frequently – but not unfairly – questioned my profound passion for Bruce Springsteen. Also, thank you to my supervisor dr. Debora Van Durme who provided detailed and useful feedback to this dissertation and who had the faith to endorse this thesis topic. I hope faith will be rewarded. Last but not least, I want to thank everyone who proofread sections of this paper and I hope that they will also be inspired by what words and music can do. As always, much love to Helena, number one Croatian Bruce fan. Thanks to Phantom Dan and the Big Man, for inspiring me over and over again. -

A Long Walk Home: the Role of Class and the Military in the Springsteen Catalogue Michael S
A Long Walk Home: The Role of Class and the Military in the Springsteen Catalogue Michael S. Neiberg United States Army War College and Robert M. Citino National World War II Museum1 Abstract This article analyzes the themes of class and military service in the Springsteen canon. As a member of the baby boom generation who narrowly missed service in Vietnam, Springsteen’s reflection on these heretofore unappreciated themes should not be surprising. Springsteen’s emergence as a musician and American icon coincide with the end of conscription and the introduction of the All-Volunteer Force in 1973. He became an international superstar as Americans were debating the meaning of the post-Vietnam era and the patriotic resurgence of the Reagan era. Because of this context, Springsteen himself became involved in veterans issues and was a voice of protest against the 2003 Iraq War. In a well-known monologue from his Live 1975-85 box set (1986), Bruce Springsteen recalls arguing with his father Douglas about the younger Springsteen’s plans for his future. Whenever Bruce provided inadequate explanations for his life goals, Douglas responded that he could not wait for the Army to “make a man” out of his long-haired, seemingly aimless son. Springsteen 1 Copyright © Michael S. Neiberg and Robert M. Citino, 2016. Michael Neiberg would like to thank Derek Varble, with whom he saw Springsteen in concert in Denver in 2005, for his helpful comments on a draft of this article. A Guiding Force
Arcadia University ScholarWorks@Arcadia Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works Undergraduate Research Winter 12-10-2020 A Guiding Force Jessica Palmer Follow this and additional works at: https://scholarworks.arcadia.edu/undergrad_works Part of the American Popular Culture Commons, Music Performance Commons, Other American Studies Commons, and the Other Music Commons Jessica T Palmer Dr. Buckley Bruce Springsteen and The American Dream 12/10/2020 Cover Page for My Research Paper A Guiding Force Abstract In this paper, I will be addressing the main factors which influenced Bruce Springsteen’s career and songwriting, specifically regarding interpersonal relationships the singer has had and how that is evident in his work thus far. I will be relating that concept to his latest album release, “Letter to You” by analyzing track by track and attempting to find that common thread of connection that seems to speak so well to him and his audience. Why? I chose this topic and album because throughout this course I have really enjoyed dissecting Springsteen’s work and relating it to a bigger picture. As I have progressed throughout this course, I have been able to elevate my writing and approach song analysis in a new, more refined way. I also felt as though choosing “Letter to You” would allow for me to make the most accurate interpretation of what Springsteen is trying to say in the current moment since it just got released a few months ago. Overall, I wanted to write about this because it allows for some creative freedom, a stream of consciousness and a continuation of the work I have been trying to perfect over the semester in this class. -
Finding Grace in the Concert Hall: Community and Meaning Among Springsteen Fans
FINDING GRACE IN THE CONCERT HALL: COMMUNITY AND MEANING AMONG SPRINGSTEEN FANS By LINDA RANDALL A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY On Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS In the Department of Religion December 2008 Winston Salem, North Carolina Approved By: Lynn Neal, PhD. Advisor _____________________________ Examining Committee: Jeanne Simonelli, Ph.D. Chair _____________________________ LeRhonda S. Manigault, Ph.D _____________________________ ii Acknowledgements First and foremost, my thanks go out to Drs. Neal and Simonelli for encouraging me to follow my passion and my heart. Dr. Neal helped me realize a framework within which I could explore my interests, and Dr. Simonelli kept my spirits alive so I could nurse the project along. My concert-going partner in crime, cruisin’tobruce, also deserves my gratitude, sharing expenses and experiences with me all over the eastern seaboard as well as some mid-America excursions. She tolerated me well, right up until the last time I forgot the tickets. I also must recognize the persistent assistance I received from my pal and companion Zero, my Maine Coon cat, who spent hours hanging over my keyboard as I typed. I attribute all typos and errors to his help, and thank him for the opportunity to lay the blame at his paws. And lastly, my thanks and gratitude goes out to Mr. Bruce Frederick Springsteen, a man of heart and of conscience who constantly keeps me honest and aware that “it ain’t no sin to be glad you’re alive (Badlands).” -

The story line of the movie is of a couple struggling in their marriage and careers and how the power of prayer totally changes their lives in miraculous ways. Many of you have seen this movie and have been blessed by the strong reminder of the power and effectiveness of a prayerful life. After seeing War Room with my family just over a month ago, I have felt a fresh power, passion, and sense of effectiveness in my prayer life. In fact, we have rearranged three rooms in our house: Elizabeth has started a prayer list on the wall in her closet, Tawna has completely reorganized her closet as a prayer room, and I have started a personal prayer wall in our bedroom closet. Some of those prayers are already being To receive our newsletter by email instead, simply send an email to answered. Praise God!
