PIANO AND POPULAR CULTURE: HOW SNOW WHITE AND CHARLIE BROWN MADE IT TO THE CONCERT HALL by LAURA ELIZABETH MITCHELL KEVIN THOMAS CHANCE, COMMITTEE CHAIR JOANNA BIERMANN TANYA L. GILLE KEN OZZELLO THOMAS S. ROBINSON KEVIN H. SHAUGHNESSY A DOCUMENT Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in the Department of Music in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2018 Copyright Laura Elizabeth Mitchell 2018 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT The relationship of popular culture to the piano can be cited in any number of works from Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca to Liszt’s paraphrase of Rigoletto, not to mention the myriad themes and variations from various composers drawing on popular melodies from folk songs to operas. Composers’ fascination with popular culture has only increased with the passage of time. This document will focus on more recent inclusions of popular culture in works for piano. The works examined are specifically, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Peanuts Gallery, which draws inspiration from Charles Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip, Earl Wild’s Reminiscences of Snow White, and Greg Anderson’s arrangement of Three Waltzes for Two Pianos, which draw inspiration from the Walt Disney Productions adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The objective will be to determine whether or not these pieces draw upon the scores that are culturally attached to these characters such as the music that accompanies the Peanuts televised specials composed by Vince Guaraldi and the film score for Snow White composed by Frank Churchill. The piano works dealing with each animated classic will also be compared to one another to determine whether or not they share compositional choices or pianistic strategies to represent the characters, stories, or motives found in the original compositions.

A comic about the baby boom that depicted the children of that boom without any parental supervision, it appeared to be set in an idyll, a small world of little folks, concerned only with small things. Even at this moment before melancholy and disappointment became its primary characteristics, however, the strip was fundamentally concerned with how its characters found their way in the world, which, at least in part, involved acting as if they were adults. For parents, such autonomy might have resonated with the emerging, and concerning, category of the teenager, had that vision not been covered over with a façade of cuteness. That mask, moreover, was one of the many factors that caused adults to imagine themselves as characters in the strip.

ABSTRACT YOU’RE A RE-LABELED BLOCKHEAD, CHARLIE BROWN: AN EXPLORATION OF ERVING GOFFMAN’S LABELING THEORY APPLIED TO DOG SEES GOD: CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGE BLOCKHEAD BY BERT V. ROYAL by Keith Arcuragi Utilizing Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead by Bert V. Royal the author studies Erving Goffman’s labeling theory. The theory applies on several levels: within the text itself via bullying written in the script, and within the author’s casting choices. The author did not cast certain roles to type; thus, the actors had to change their physical and emotional presentations to fit the roles of the characters. The author directed the play to three audiences at Miami University, and asked audience members to reply to the labels they saw on stage, and how it impacted their view of labeling theory. None of the audience surveys indicated that observers would have preferred typecast actors. The success of the play, as ascertained by audience surveys, indicates that typecasting is not necessary to a good production. Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} It's a New World Charlie Brown! by Charles M. Schulz Who are you, Charlie Brown is going to make me cry, isn't it? I have a feeling that I might tear up once or twice while watching Who Are You, Charlie Brown? This new Peanuts documentary, launching June 25 on Apple TV Plus, will take a look at the enduring legacy of the Peanuts and its creator, Charles Schulz. Announced today (June 4) with a trailer, the documentary is narrated by Lupita Nyong'o and features interviews with Jean Schulz (Charles Schulz' widow), Drew Barrymore, Billie Jean King, Al Roker, Ira Glass, Kevin Smith, Paul Feig, and others. The latest news about Outlander season 6 Is Mare of Easttown season 2 happening? Plus: The Flash director teases Michael Keaton's return as Batman. The roughly 2-minute trailer for Who Are You, Charlie Brown? also contains clips from older interviews with Schulz, who passed away 21 years ago. Based on what's in the trailer, the documentary looks to explore the impact that Peanuts had on society, from having girls playing sports, to addressing racism with the introduction of Franklin, a Black character, in 1968. The larger themes of Peanuts — also part of its legacy — will also be examined, such as Charlie Brown's relentless faith that things will turn his way, no matter how many times Lucy swipes the football away. "Keep on trying, Charlie Brown," says Schulz in the trailer. "And if anyone should give up, he should." I have a real soft spot in my heart for the Peanuts, and couldn't help but get more than a little excited when I heard the familiar strains of Linus & Lucy playing in the background.
