Beichen says art had always been a major interest, but she found herself intimidated from discovering her own artistic self. This changed when she left China in the late 80’s, moving to the U.S. (Vermont) and pursuing a B.A. in Studio Arts. After returning to China she collaborated with her father for three years on a published collection of his works, and managed his gallery located in Shenzhen University. Upon returning to the U.S., Beichen’s art had to take a back seat to other business ventures, then re-awakened to a serious pursuit in the last several years with the estab- lishment of her own studio. By Carol Graham Reading the newspaper over breakfast one morning, Carl Tilchen came across a quote that would inspire him to write a song dedicated to refugees. "Imagine for a second it were you, your child in your arms, the world you knew torn apart around you," said Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission. "There is no wall you would not climb, no sea you would not sail, no border you would not cross." Tilchen said, "When I read that quote, I was inspired to compose a song with the hope that many people, especially the decision-makers in government who Juncker was trying to influence, will welcome the refugees and help them." Juncker's September 9th State of the Union address, titled "Time for Honesty, Unity and Solidarity," urged the European Union, a politico-economic union of 28 member states located primarily in Europe, to make the refugee crisis a top priority. "Since the beginning of the year, nearly 500,000 people have made their way to Europe," Juncker said. "The vast majority are fleeing from war in Syria, the terror of the Islamic State in Libya, or dictatorship in Eritrea. "This is first of all a matter of humanity and of human dignity. And for Europe it is also a matter of historical fairness. We Europeans should remember well that Europe is a continent where nearly everyone has at one time been a refugee.
