In his first decade of service leading Vanderbilt Student Communications, Chris Carroll oversaw the creation of seven new media groups and six new staff positions. So far during his tenure, Vanderbilt media groups have netted 31 awards, and Carroll’s leader- ship recently has transformed student media into a national model for digital converged media operations. Carroll envisioned and created with student leaders a converged newsroom to support multiple publications, with a focus on InsideVandy.com, the “mothership” of student media at Vanderbilt. With his finger on the pulse of the rapidly changing newspaper industry, Carroll realized the nationwide shift to digital media meant Vanderbilt student media also would have to change, preferably out- pacing the broader industry. The creation of InsideVandy in September heralded a new chapter for student media at Vanderbilt – and across all of higher education. Carroll worked tirelessly to develop the site as a place for readers to access traditional media at Vanderbilt and for students to report breaking news to a worldwide audience. Furthermore, in keeping with industry leaders, the site encourages community participation through blogs, story comments, photo submissions and citizen journalism. Senior Gavin Fletcher started the Talented Tenth newspaper as a way to address racial and cultural issues This latest evolution in student media at Vanderbilt was not the on campus. Cindy Lovelace: NASHVILLE, TN (CO-FOUNDER, AND EMPLOYED AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SINCE 2015 Why are you serving on the HNF board? The road to creating the Healing NET Foundation began on a patient path for me, and a physician path for Dr. Eric Liu. We had no idea our paths would cross, but when they did, I felt relief and peace at finding a doctor who understood and had experience treating this odd cancer. It began a conversation, which led to a partnership to help other patients find the right path. With Dr. Liu’s medical expertise, and my background in media, marketing, and fundraising, we work with our Board of Directors to fill the gap between patient advocacy organizations who educate the known patients and the physician organizations who represent NET experts already aware of the disease. With this collaboration we are able to bring it full circle. We want to better connect patients with the expert care needed, and help them advocate for themselves, and provide the most updated and solid information about NETs to community physicians and health care professionals. Every week my thoughts are with the patients and caregivers I’ve met, but my concern grows for those who are still searching for answers or are resigned to the limited answers they’ve been given. About Cindy Lovelace Cindy Francis Lovelace began a radio news career in Nashville at WKDA-WKDF in 1979, serving as a Capitol Hill reporter, then Program Director/News Anchor. In 1995, she became Director of Promotions at WKDF/WGFX radio, and was promoted to Director of Marketing and Promotions for WKDF/WGFX/Titans Radio when the company purchased the rights to Tennessee Titans Radio Network in 1998.

Kosher Country: Success and Survival on Nashville's Music Row V Stacy Harris uring the last few years, Nashville's country music in- dustry has been mourning a larger number of its citizens Dthan usual. These losses included two, Norma Gerson ("makeup artist to the stars") and Rainbow Room owner/- erstwhile "Hee Haw" bit-player David "Skull" Schulman ("the mayor of Printers' Alley"), that underscore the little-known range and diversity of roles Jews have played in Nashville and country- music history. According to Karen B. Fine, Nashville's Jewish music indus- try population numbers "about 60 or 70."1 Few would characterize this minority as a vocal one. Indeed, when Life staff writer Charles Hirshberg wrote about the relationship between Jews and country music in the Forward, he titled the article "Nashville's Jewish Newcomers Assert Themselves (Softly)."2 Likening the reluctance of Jewish country-music industry participants to medieval Marranos who, Hirshberg believed, kept "their Jewishness private to protect their livelihoods," Hirshberg's observations of five years ago seem equally as dire in 1999.3 There would well be a justification for this. Country music's heritage is rooted in traditions of a Protestant-Christian America. Six years ago, this author wrote, "Most country artists have re- corded at least one album of sacred songs; indeed it is almost expected."4 112 SOUTHERN JEWISH HISTORY Nonetheless change may be imminent. With many more new artists and a younger listener base, this expectation no longer exists. While it still looks good for a country singer to have a press kit containing biographical information noting that the subject's earliest memories are of "hymns or more fervent gospel songs" and of his/her own performances in church, whether true or not, such references are increasingly less mandatory.
