Blog Document Leadership Learnings From Bloggers 2008 Edition Leadership Learnings from Bloggers 2008 Edition Released February 2009 Aggregated and produced by Exponential Media, a Division of Exponential Network Leadership Learnings from Bloggers is a collection of blog posts on leadership from over 20 national leaders / bloggers. Disclaimer In selecting the 20+ bloggers for this resource, we choose leaders with experience on the front lines. However, Exponential Network makes no warranties or representations regarding the accuracy, validity or originality of each blogger’s content. Exponential Network is serving as an aggregator of leading bloggers and does not necessarily agree with the opinions and beliefs represented in individual posts. We’ve attempted to include their content verbatim from their web sites except for obvious typographical errors. Statement of Copyright The individual posts in this eBook are the copyright of each author. These authors have agreed to make the aggregation of these posts available free of charge via this eBook. The following conditions apply to the use of this free eBook resource: Share. Just as the authors are sharing this eBook with you, you may copy, distribute and transmit the work to others. For general questions about this eBook, email [email protected]. i About Proverbs 15:22 (NIV) states that “plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Leadership Learnings from Bloggers grew out of a desire to provide insights to church planters from more experienced leaders. As we compiled the resource it became clear that the collective insights were applicable to any leader and not just church planters. So the work was split into two projects. This first resource is leadership learnings applicable to any leader. A supplemental resource is also being compiled with unique content for church planters. Although the resource was compiled for use directly by church leaders, the learnings are applicable to nearly any leader because many are rooted in principles and practical experience on the front lines of service. This resource covers leadership topics from staffing to vision casting. We encourage you not to read this as a “how to” manual. Be cautious and slow to directly implement any of the learnings. Ponder the principles behind the learnings and adapt them to your unique context. Just as the Exponential Network makes no claim to agree with all the learnings, you may disagree with some. Be discerning. We wrestled with whether to organize the resource by author or by subject. In the end, many of the posts cover multiple topics so we opted to organize the resource by author. In selecting blog authors for inclusion, we surveyed a number of blog readers and simply asked for a list of their favorite bloggers. Additionally, the team at Passion for Planting follows a large number of bloggers for inclusion in NewChurches.com’s aggregator. The authors we asked to participate represent those who were most frequently cited on “my top 10 list.” With one or two exceptions, every leader who was asked to participate in this free resource enthusiastically did. So how did we choose the number of posts for each blogger? Not scientifically. In a few cases, bloggers asked that we limit the number of posts. For most bloggers, we simply looked at each post through the lens of leadership learnings applicable to new church leaders. In most all cases, the learnings are universally applicable to leaders independent of context. The Exponential Network (aggregator of this free resource) exists to attract, inspire and equip Kingdom-minded leaders to engage in a movement of high-impact, reproducing churches. We provide a national voice for this movement through the Exponential Conference, the Exponential Channel, the Exponential Church feature article in Outreach Magazine, the Exponential Book Series, and a growing number of alliance members (leading church planting groups choosing to affiliate with one another via Exponential Network). For more information on the Exponential Network and it’s alliance members, go to www.exponentialnetwork.com or email [email protected], or call 800.319.5361 ii Special Thanks Nearly every blogger we approached enthusiastically supported the idea of this resource and in allowing their content to be included for FREE. Using the case study research method, I examine six case studies of church governance failures reported in the past two decades in the English media of mainly Western jurisdictions. The six case studies involve churches in the United States, Australia, Honduras, and Singapore. Three of the case studies involve sexual matters while another three involve financial matters. For each type of misconduct or alleged misconduct, one case study is chosen involving a church with congregational polity, presbyteral polity, and episcopal polity, respectively.

  • Chinese Protestant Christianity Today Daniel H. Bays
Chinese Protestant Christianity Today Daniel H. Bays ABSTRACT Protestant Christianity has been a prominent part of the general religious resurgence in China in the past two decades. In many ways it is the most striking example of that resurgence. Along with Roman Catholics, as of the 1950s Chinese Protestants carried the heavy historical liability of association with Western domi- nation or imperialism in China, yet they have not only overcome that inheritance but have achieved remarkable growth. Popular media and human rights organizations in the West, as well as various Christian groups, publish a wide variety of information and commentary on Chinese Protestants. This article first traces the gradual extension of interest in Chinese Protestants from Christian circles to the scholarly world during the last two decades, and then discusses salient characteristics of the Protestant movement today. These include its size and rate of growth, the role of Church–state relations, the continuing foreign legacy in some parts of the Church, the strong flavour of popular religion which suffuses Protestantism today, the discourse of Chinese intellectuals on Christianity, and Protestantism in the context of the rapid economic changes occurring in China, concluding with a perspective from world Christianity. Protestant Christianity has been a prominent part of the general religious resurgence in China in the past two decades. Today, on any given Sunday there are almost certainly more Protestants in church in China than in all of Europe.1 One recent thoughtful scholarly assessment characterizes Protestantism as “flourishing” though also “fractured” (organizationally) and “fragile” (due to limits on the social and cultural role of the Church).2 And popular media and human rights organizations in the West, as well as various Christian groups, publish a wide variety of information and commentary on Chinese Protestants.

  • History of Life.Church
HISTORY OF LIFE.CHURCH God has done far more than we could have ever asked or imagined since Life.Church held our first worship experience. In this time, hundreds of thousands of lives have been changed. As we celebrate all He has done, we know there is much more to come since millions around the world still don't know Christ. We are honored He has entrusted us with such an awesome responsibility as we strive to do anything short of sin to spread His message. Here are some highlights from our story. 1996 § Senior Pastor Craig Groeschel and his wife, Amy, knew God had given them a vision to start a church—a different kind of church. In January, with a handful of people and a clear mission to lead people to become fully devoted followers of Christ, Life Church (the first of four iterations of the church’s name) began meeting in a rented dance studio in Edmond, Oklahoma. Within a few short weeks, our church’s attendance grew to over 130 people and we began to meet in a local middle school. Steady growth continued, which enabled a second move within the year to a renovated bicycle factory. 1997 § Life Church was averaging 200 people each week and continued to grow quickly. At this point, the only option to accommodate the growth was to add additional worship experiences. 1999 § In the spring, Life Covenant Church completed a 750-seat worship center, known today as Life.Church Oklahoma City. Attendance had grown to over 1,250 throughout three worship experiences every weekend.

  • THE POWER of PARTNERSHIP BELD Annual Report 2004 from the General Manager
BRAINTREE ELECTRIC LIGHT DEPARTMENT THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP BELD annual report 2004 FROM the general manager... 2004 was an exciting and challenging year for Braintree Electric Light Department. The Electric Division was able to hold rates steady even when energy prices—driven by the cost of natural gas—fluctuated significantly. A number of major projects were completed as well, including improvements to our underground 115 kV transmission system loop, the electrical tie under Route 128 between Wood Road and Brooks Drive, and the installation of decorative streetlights in the Washington Street area. Major projects planned for 2005 include rebuilding and lowering the profile of our Plain Street substation and the installation of a new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. Both of these projects will increase the reliability of our electrical distribution network. William G. Bottiggi The Broadband Division also continued to perform well in the competitive market of General Manager cable TV and high-speed Internet. High-definition television (HDTV) was introduced, and the Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) was replaced with new higher-capacity equipment. As a result, Internet download speeds were increased from 3 Mbps to 5 Mbps, keeping us ahead of the competition. Even with the expense of these upgrades and other improvements, the Broadband BRAINTREE MUNICIPAL LIGHT BOARD “As they say on my own Division was able to maintain price points significantly below the competition. We are Braintree Electric Light Department (BELD) is a public power looking forward to enhancing our customers’ broadband experience during 2005 with the utility—one of over 2,000 in the country.

  • III: the Three Main Branches of Christianity Today
Nick Strobel’s notes on “The Soul of Christianity” by Huston Smith III: The Three Main Branches of Christianity Today In this last chapter of The Soul of Christianity, Huston Smith looks at the three main branches of Christianity: Roman Catholicism (focused on the Vatican in Rome and dominant in Poland, central & southern Europe, Ireland, and South America), Eastern Orthodoxy (major influence in Greece, Slavic countries, and Russia), and Protestantism (dominant in northern Europe, England, Scotland, and North America). In the year 313 the Christian church became legally recognized under Constantine I. In the year 380, Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire. In 1054, the first great division occurred between the groups that would become the Eastern Orthodox Church in the East and the Roman Catholic Church in the West. Then in the 16th century the Protestant Reformation brought the next great division. Protestantism followed 4 strands: Baptist, Lutheran, Calvinists, and Anglican which themselves have subdivided many times. Now over 900 denominations! Roman Catholicism Smith looks at the Church as teaching authority and as sacramental agent. Authority The communion of God and man through the history of humanity reaches its apex in Mary, who incorporated in her self the history of her people through God’s grace. She freely assented to God’s plan by her assent to become the mother of God. Though God is the ultimate “authority”, part of God’s loving plan, part of God’s total generosity, is setting human freedom at the center of the work of redemption. Mary’s “yes” to God, her obedience to God, makes her the first and greatest disciple, with an authority transcending all other authority in the Church.
