CENTRE FOR CROATIAN STUDIES GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS INTERNATIONAL GUIDE FOR Mission The Centre for Croatian Studies offers study programmes in certain fields of humanities and social sciences, as well as in the relevant interdisciplinary fields, with special emphasis on different components of the Croatian language, culture STUDIES CROATIAN 1. The Centre also carries out research activities in these fields, offers certificate programmes in education, and provides educational and research services to the Croatian diaspora. One of the missions of the Cenre is to bring together and coordinate activities of various institutions and individuals who work on Croatian language, culture and society – be they from the other units of the University of Zagreb, other institutions of higher education, or research institutes – from Croatia and abroad. Vision The Centre for Croatian Studies aims to be one of the pivotal institutions of higher education, research and learning of the University of Zagreb, recognized for the emphasis it puts on Croatian language, culture and society in its study programmes and research activities, with the aim of affirming Croatian language and culture nationally and internationally. 7 2. Communication Studies (single & double major) The undergraduate study programme in Communication Studies is specific in that it provides students with opportunities to acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge in two professions – journalism and public relations – as well as in communication science, a very recent discipline devoted to research on journa- lism, public relations and the process of mass communication as a whole. The study programme has been devised to enable students to master not only basic practical skills, but also specific theoretical knowledge in journalism and public relations, as well as research terminology and the foundations of commu- GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS INTERNATIONAL GUIDE FOR nication science. Throughout the programme students are acquainted with the historical development of journalism and mass communication both in Croatia ENT and worldwide. They acquire understanding of standard mass media (the press, M radio and television) and the new media, as well as agencies and public relations – required for the media to operate. Upon opting for one of the science streams on offer, students acquire basic knowledge of their chosen stream, including the ES & ENROL methods of reporting typical for that particular stream. Graduates of Commu- MM nication Studies are qualified for entry-level jobs in a range of media or in the corporate sector (public relations departments). In addition, students develop the ability to reflect critically on the reality which surrounds them and the way this reality is presented in the media. Elective courses in their field familiarise 3. Croatology (single & double major) ES & ENROL MM The undergraduate study programme in Croatology is an interdisciplinary study programme dedicated to the study of Croatian cultural and national identity. Apart from studying various achievements that make up an integral body of culture of the Croatian people in the European environment, the study of Croatology is dedicated to the application of such knowledge in different areas of social and PROGRA 3. DEGREE cultural life. The programme provides students with skills and knowledge related to the building blocks of Croatian culture, including their respective historical dimensions. During the first year, students are introduced to the study of Croatian culture and to the main features of the Croatian identity in the European context. In addition, students acquire knowledge of the initial periods of Croatian cultural, political and literary history. Studying the development of Croatian culture is conti- nued during the second year and is used as the foundation for further learning of Croatian ethnology and deepening the knowledge of Croatian standard language (with emphasis on syntax). In the third year, basic knowledge of Croatian archaeo- logical heritage, arts, music, theatre, natural sciences and the history of standard language is acquired.
