Mongkoo Chung, Chairman and CEO of HKAG, headed the first CSR Committee meeting on May 15 at the group’s headquarters in Seoul. Five other CEO’s representing the group’s major affiliates also attended the meeting. The five include representatives from Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Motors Corp., Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Steel and Hyundai Hysco. The committee agreed to participate in the United Nations’ Global Compact, as well as form the `Happy Move Global Young Volunteers’ to send 1,000 volunteers overseas by the end of the year. The group will also expand its internship program for university students. HKAG will select 500 Happy Move volunteers this summer and another 500 at year end. The first batch of 500 will be sent to five countries, including China, India, Turkey, Slovakia and Thailand to do volunteer work in areas related to the environment, local welfare, medicine and culture. The automotive group will also hire a total of 500 interns this year. As a global company, HKAG is forming the `Happy Move Global Young Volunteers’ as part of plans to expand its contribution to the global community and to nurture leaders of tomorrow. The automotive group last month announced that it would strengthen its CSR activities by forming this committee, to boost transparency and develop a sustainable relationship with shareholders, customers, employees, affiliates and community members. The committee last month announced its decision to strengthen social responsibility activities and establish management practices based on trust. The first and foremost agenda on the list was the stabilization of relations between management and labor, as well as the prosperous coexistence of the automotive group’s various partners. The committee announced a total of 27 tasks within three big agendas. Established in 1967, Hyundai Motor Co. has grown into the HyundaiKia Automotive Group which was ranked as the world’s sixth largest automaker in 2006 and includes over two dozen autorelated subsidiaries and affiliates. Employing over 75,000 people worldwide, Hyundai Motor posted sales of US$74.9 billion in 2007 on a consolidatedbasis and US$32.8 billion on a non consolidated basis (using the average currency exchange of 929 won per US dollar).
