Virginia man killed in N.C. 89 wreck Tom Joyce Staff Reporter LOWGAP — A Virginia man was killed Saturday night in a single-vehicle roll-over accident on N.C. 89 at Lowgap, according to a Surry County emergency official. The name of the wreck victim, who was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, was not immediately released due to authorities having to no- tify his next of kin. The driver is thought to be about 49 years old and was from the Galax area. Saturday night’s incident marked the third traffic fa- tality in Surry County this Labor Day weekend. Surry Emergency Services Director John Shelton said the latest accident occurred about 7:45 p.m. near the intersection of N.C. 89 and Lumber Plant Road at the former Lowgap Elementary School. “It looks like a high rate of speed” was involved, Shelton said of the wreck. The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, which turned over and ended up in the parking lot of Photos by Tom Joyce | The News Fair-goers take advantage of the inal day of the event Saturday.
