1 READING PLAN PURPOSE

One person said, “Christianity is not primarily about lifestyle change; it is about knowing God.” In our reading the , we see an aspect of who God is that we are incapable of finding else- where. The gospels reveal who God is personally. Walking through one of the accounts will do this, but as we read the four accounts found in Scripture, we see how God chose to reveal him- self to his people. Each gospel reveals who is from a different vantage point. From the four gospel accounts, we get a picture of Jesus’ life and person. If we have seen Jesus, we have seen the Father; seeing Jesus in each of the gospel accounts enables us to engage with God personally throughout our lives. This reading plan will walk through the four gospel accounts in an effort to see how Jesus’ story interrupts our own.

2 JOHN

OVERVIEW

John writes in chapter 20, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the , and that by believing you may have life in his name.” Everything John writes in his gospel account is oriented toward an- swering the question, “Who is Jesus?” Through reflection on this question, we are able to deepen our understanding of the life of Je- sus and the implications his life has on our own. The leads us deeper into belief as we think through who we understand Jesus to be.

3 THURSDAY, APRIL 22

READ John Chapter 1: Who is Jesus?

READING PROMPT In the first chapter of John, characters refer to Jesus using several different names. Jesus is referred to as the Word, the Lamb of God, Rabbi, the King of Israel, and so on. Throughout the first chapter, John is drawing the reader into the mystery of who Jesus is. How can so many people refer to him with such weighty titles? Who could this man be? Why do people think he’s such a big deal? John invites his reader to think through these questions, and throughout the rest of his gospel account he aims to look into what answers might be suitable for such a character.

PRAYER PROMPT Reflect on how you have answered the question, “Who is Jesus?” throughout your life. Prayerfully invite the Holy Spirit to speak through his word into how you answer this question today and into what your answer might mean for your life. Take a moment to read through the first chapter again as you ask the Spirit to draw your focus to one Jesus’ specific titles, then spend a moment praising God for this reality of who Jesus is, and ask him to reveal what it might mean for your day today.

4 FRIDAY, APRIL 23

READ John Chapter 2: Jesus Wasn’t Caught Up In Religion.

READING PROMPT Religious rituals and customs were at the center of the Jewish culture. The water jars would have been used to accomplish these Jewish requirements, so when Jesus works a in this chapter, he is simultaneously reworking how we think about the way we relate to God. Later in the chapter, Jesus cleanses the temple as he calls out the flaws in a religious and stagnant approach to God. As you read the second chapter of John, think through what Jesus might be reworking in how we think about approaching God.

PRAYER PROMPT Today as you read, pray that the Spirit would reveal to you the ways you’ve been trying to earn God’s approval throughout your life. In what areas are you striving and wearing yourself out as an attempt to please him? Pray that Jesus’ grace would flood these areas of your life, and that you may experience freedom in the gospel.

5 SATURDAY, APRIL 24

READ John Chapter 3: Jesus, the Son of God

READING PROMPT In the third chapter of John, Jesus looks back at Scripture and forward to what his own life will entail. As you read through the third chapter of John, reflect on who Jesus is, and what it means for the world as a whole.

PRAYER PROMPT Prayerfully respond to the love that was expressed toward you and this world as recounts.

6 SUNDAY, APRIL 25

READ John Chapter 4: Valuing the One in Front of You

READING PROMPT Throughout , notice how Jesus interacts with the people around him regardless of their status. Jesus has a conversation with a woman (abnormal in his culture and time), then he talks with his disciples, and later responds to an official’s plea for help. Jesus is present with the people in front of him regardless of what they have to offer him and without a concern for what the social implications might be.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for God to draw your mind toward the people in your life you have an opportunity to communicate God’s love to, regardless of what they might have to offer you.

7 MONDAY, APRIL 26

READ John Chapter 5: The Father is the Source of Jesus’ Strength and Authority

READING PROMPT As Jesus interacts with the man at the gate, the religious leaders are concerned once again with the religious regulations and rituals. Jesus, however, continues to walk with greater concern for people than he does for procedures. As this passage unfolds, reflect on what authority Jesus appeals to. Whether you find your- self resting or in a hurry today, think through whose authority you are looking to for your strength.

PRAYER PROMPT Busyness and hurriedness often distract us from the presence of God in the spaces we enter, and yet rest can do the very same thing. Regardless of what today holds for you, take a moment to pray for an awareness of God’s presence throughout your day.

8 TUESDAY, APRIL 27

READ John Chapter 6: Loving Jesus for who He is More Than for What He Does

READING PROMPT After the feeding of the five thousand in , Jesus will point out the tendency in people to value what he can do for them more than they value him for who he is. As you read through the sixth chapter of John, focus on the weight of who Jesus is, and what it might mean for your life beyond the immediate benefits that come from following him.

PRAYER PROMPT Spend a moment praising God for who he is, then prayerfully reflect on what your prayers typically look like. If you have al- lowed God to become a resource you use to try to get him to do what you want, consider entering into a time of surrendering your desires as you ask God to mold you more into his likeness.

9 WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28

READ John Chapter 7: Do Not Judge by Appearances

READING PROMPT In verse 24 of , Jesus challenges the Jewish leaders to judge not by appearance, but by right judgement. This challenge to the Jewish leaders still confronts our culture today. So often, we are compelled to judge a situation, person, or idea right away based on the appearance alone. How, then, are we supposed to make good and right judgement calls? In verse 17, Jesus says, “If any- one’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether speaking on my own authority.” Jesus is claiming that the difference between falling into judging a book by its cover and walking with healthy discernment begins with a battle over our desires. In John 7, we can see the difficulty that our own desires can present in how we think through good and right judgement calls.

PRAYER PROMPT As you pray through John 7 today, ask God to rework your desires to be aligned with his heart for this world. In the moments our will is aligned with Christ’s, we are offered a perspective toward people, situations, and ideas that we could never have understood on our own. In the aligning of our will to Christ’s, we gain a new vantage point altogether.

10 THURSDAY, APRIL 29

READ John Chapter 8: Jesus and the Father are one

READING PROMPT The God of the and the Jesus we see in the are often perceived as independent from one another. In the eighth chapter of John, Jesus makes it clear that this is far from the truth. Throughout this chapter, Jesus’ words remind us that he is, and has been, connected to the Father in all things. In this relationship shared between the Father and the Son, we are able to see that Jesus is not just some good guy and the Father is not just the angry and vengeful god that people make him out to be. The Father is incredibly involved in the redemption narrative of humanity, and the Son is united to the powerful Creator-God we see in the Old Testament.

PRAYER PROMPT Today as you pray, praise God for the beauty in his united plan for humanity’s redemption, and for how the Father, Son, and Spirit work toward the flourishing of humanity through the life of Jesus.

11 FRIDAY, APRIL 30

READ John Chapter 9: God is Glorified

READING PROMPT As Jesus encounters a suffering blind man, it can be easy to read his words as though Jesus is claiming that suffering exists for God’s glory. Jesus’ point, however, is more aimed at the glory God will receive through this man’s healing- and the conversa- tions that will follow. Through this man’s encounter with Jesus as his healer, Jesus is also able to speak about the realities of spiritu- al arrogance in those who think they have God figured out.

PRAYER PROMPT Our pride in thinking we know more about God than we do can often get in the way of seeing more of who God actually is. Pray for a humble spirit in how you think about God. In our willingness to admit we are blinded to many things, Jesus often works to reveal more of who he is.

12 SATURDAY, MAY 1

READ John Chapter 10: The

READING PROMPT Much of chapter 10 is made up of Jesus’ words defining himself as the Good Shepherd. In this passage, we see what it looks like for a shepherd to care for his flock. As you read, pay attention to the concern a good shepherd bears for the flock, and how that might resemble how Christ has cared for you throughout your life.

PRAYER PROMPT Spend a moment writing out a list of how God has cared for you throughout your life. Once you have a list, pray through it as you thank and praise God for what he’s done in your life.

13 SUNDAY, MAY 2

READ John Chapter 11: The Promise of the Resurrection

READING PROMPT As chapter 11 unfolds, we see Jesus’ response to the reality of his friend’s death. In verse 25, we see that in Christ we are not offered complete avoidance of pain and suffering here on Earth, but we are offered a resurrection. And in Jesus’ response and presence throughout the chapter we get to see that, when we do find ourselves in seasons of difficulty, grief, and mourning, our grief does not have to be in competition with our faith. Jesus reveals how deep mourning and complete trust in God can exist alongside one another.

PRAYER PROMPT If you are in a difficult time where you have found yourself griev- ing and mourning, set aside time to bring your hurt to God in prayer. If you are not in a season of mourning or grief, pray for someone you know who is going through a difficult time.

14 MONDAY, MAY 3

READ John Chapter 12: True Belief

READING PROMPT Throughout , we see the examples of the varying forms of belief in Mary, the crowd, and the religious leaders. These exam- ples show us what belief can look like when we’re all in, when we go along with the faith of the people around us, and when we stand in opposition to God. As you reflect on the different forms of belief throughout the chapter, think through what Jesus reveals of true belief in 12v44-50

PRAYER PROMPT Prayerfully invite God into your belief. If you sense an aspect of un- belief in yourself, ask God to help you in the building of true faith.

15 TUESDAY, MAY 4

READ John Chapter 13: Loving Service

READING PROMPT Jesus encourages his disciples toward serving others in love, but does so by first serving them as he washes their feet. In this chap- ter, take note of the humble service Jesus lives into as he washes the feet of the disciples.

PRAYER PROMPT What are practical ways you could serve those around you? As you pray about what opportunities you may have to act in loving service, pray with a closer circle of people around you in mind.

16 WEDNESDAY, MAY 5

READ John Chapter 14: The Way, the Truth, and the Life

READING PROMPT In the fourteenth chapter of John, Jesus makes clear that the way to the Father is through him alone. In this chapter, notice how the Father, Son, and Spirit are united in their mission in this world.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray that the name of Jesus would go out into the world, and that people would believe in the good news of the gospel.

17 THURSDAY, MAY 6

READ John Chapter 15: Abiding

READING PROMPT Abiding in Christ can often be perceived as a hyper spiritual act when you turn everything else around you off and sit in silence for a few hours. Yet, abiding is more realistically a way of walking through life with an awareness of God’s presence in each and every moment.

PRAYER PROMPT Today, pray as you go through the more mundane moments as you invite God to show you where he is in each moment of your day.

18 FRIDAY, MAY 7

READ John Chapter 16: The Holy Spirit

READING PROMPT As Jesus talks about the Holy Spirit, he points to the Holy Spirit convicting the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judge- ment. He also points to the Holy Spirit’s guidance of his people toward truth, and his work toward the glory of Jesus. As you read, reflect on how you have responded to the Holy Spirit in each of these areas.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for an increased awareness of how the Holy Spirit is working in your heart and mind around each of the areas Jesus references throughout .

19 SATURDAY, MAY 8

READ John Chapter 17: Jesus Prays

READING PROMPT Jesus’ prayer in offers us a unique glimpse into the relationship between the Father and the Son. In this window into how the Father and Son relate to one another, we see in v20 that Jesus asks the Father that those who believe in him would experi- ence unity with one another and with God in a remarkable way.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray that belief would increase throughout the world, and that believers would experience unity in Christ throughout the world.

20 SUNDAY, MAY 9

READ John Chapter 18: Judas, Peter, and Pilate

READING PROMPT The passive interactions of Judas, Peter, and Pilate can be difficult to read through. It can be hard to imagine a close friend acting in such betrayal, and even more difficult to imagine that betrayal to be against the Son of God. Yet, in Judas, Peter, and in Pilate we are offered a glimpse into the moments we ourselves live into a passive faith. There are moments we value wealth, status, and comfort far more than we do the name of Jesus and the potential repercussions that come alongside identifying in his name.

PRAYER PROMPT Today as you pray, reflect on the moments you have been more concerned with what the people around you might think than what God might think of you.

21 MONDAY, MAY 10

READ John Chapter 19: The Crucifixion

READING PROMPT When the crucifixion is thought about, the resurrection is almost always in the next sentence. Today as you read, allow yourself to stop at the crucifixion and feel the weight of the moment the Son of God died. When the weight of Christ’s death is increased, the weight of the resurrection is increased as well.

PRAYER PROMPT Prayerfully mourn and grieve the death of Christ on behalf of humanity’s sin.

22 TUESDAY, MAY 11

READ John Chapter 20: The Resurrection

READING PROMPT The is one of the focal points of the Christian faith. The hope of our future resurrection finds itself secured in the reality of Christ’s resurrection from death. It is in light of this resur- rection John attributes the purpose of his writing altogether.

PRAYER PROMPT Praise God for the resurrection of Jesus and for the hope of our resurrection in Christ.

23 WEDNESDAY, MAY 12

READ John Chapter 21: Follow Me

READING PROMPT In verses 15-22 of , John is caught up in comparison with Peter and is distracted from what Jesus has for him. Jesus re- sponds by reminding John to focus on following him rather than being occupied by what god has for others around him. In this final chapter of John, we are reminded that the focus in this life is not intended to be comparison or judgment of what others have been called into, but to follow Jesus with everything we have. PRAYER PROMPT Ask God to reveal the distractions in your life so that you might be able to be more aware of what it looks like for you to focus on following him. As things come to mind, ask God to give you the power and presence to value him above all things.

24 LUKE

OVERVIEW

The narrative of Luke has a consistent focus on what God has done and continues to do as it emphasizes the upside-down nature of the kingdom of God, the journey of Christ, and the embodiment of God’s purpose through Jesus. As you read through Luke’s account of the gospel, allow yourself to be encouraged and challenged in your faith.

25 THURSDAY, MAY 13

READ Luke Chapter 1: Mary’s Song

READING PROMPT Choosing the words to launch Luke’s account of the gospel would have taken a massive amount of intention and thoughtfulness. As writings were produced on scrolls in Luke’s culture and time, the first portion of writing would have served to set up his gospel ac- count as a whole. In Chapter 1v3, Luke makes clear the motive to present an orderly account of Jesus’s life here on Earth. In verses 46-55 he expands on some major themes through Mary’s song. In Mary’s song, we get a taste of what will follow throughout the book of Luke. In these verses, almost every verb points to God’s action as Luke illustrates the upside-down nature of the kingdom of God, and speaks of Jesus as the embodiment and interpreter of God’s mission. As you read through the first chapter of Luke, think through what Luke might be looking to as he recounts the greatest story ever told.

PRAYER PROMPT As you read today, pray that God would make his story refresh- ing to you. If you have been in a season where God’s word has seemed monotonous or you have grown numb to Scripture, pray that God would move through his word in a striking way. If you are in a season where you cannot get enough of his word, pray that God would continue to move in you as you read through Luke’s account of the gospel.

26 FRIDAY, MAY 14

READ Luke Chapter 2: The Humble King

READING PROMPT In the second chapter of Luke, the great move of God looked to in chapter one comes in the form of an infant. As you read through Jesus’ birth and childhood, think through the humility of our God to come to the earth in the way he did.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for humility in Christ.

27 SATURDAY, MAY 15

READ Luke Chapter 3:

READING PROMPT As you read through Luke 3, pay attention to the strength of John the Baptist’s faith despite any opposition he comes up against.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for a boldness in your faith regardless of what it might cost you.

28 SUNDAY, MAY 16

READ Luke Chapter 4: Jesus’ Mission

READING PROMPT Luke 4, verses 18-19 mark the beginning of Jesus’ ministry here on Earth. As you read through this chapter, think of what this mission might mean for us, and what it might look like for us to be involved in what God has been doing in this world.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for opportunities to get involved in Jesus’ mission here on earth, and ask God to show you what it could look like to join him as he moves throughout our city and world.

29 MONDAY, MAY 17

READ Luke Chapter 5: The Disciples Follow Jesus

READING PROMPT The Disciples are in awe of Jesus they interact with him while fish- ing., and, after their encounter, they leave everything to follow him. While you read through this chapter of Luke, ask yourself if you have the kind of faith that would abandon all to follow after Christ.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray that God would strengthen your faith, and that he would show you what your next faith steps might look like.

30 TUESDAY, MAY 18

READ Luke Chapter 6: Jesus as our Foundation

READING PROMPT The sixth chapter in Luke walks through the , an un- healthy focus on religious practices (like the sabbath), loving our enemies, judging others, and fruitfulness in life. In each of these moments, Jesus is pointing toward himself as our foundation. When we build our life on our abilities and skillsets, we are sure to watch as our life is swept away at the sign of trouble or difficul- ty. Centering our life on Jesus is the way we build our life on the firm foundation.

PRAYER PROMPT As you pray today, ask God to reveal to you the things in life you are dependent on for contentment. Prayerfully consider what it might look like for you to have God as the center and foundation of your life.

31 WEDNESDAY, MAY 19

READ Luke Chapter 7: Jesus’ Mission Continued

READING PROMPT Verses 22-23 in Luke 7 recall what Jesus proclaimed in Luke 4v18- 19, and as chapter seven progresses, Jesus’ mission to see people saved by his grace through faith is revealed.

PRAYER PROMPT What would it look like for you to get involved with the mission of Jesus in your city? Take a moment to pray into how God is moving in your area, and to prayerfully reflect on what it could look like to partner with him in what he is already doing.

32 THURSDAY, MAY 20

READ Luke Chapter 8: Good Soil

READING PROMPT As you read through Luke 8, ask yourself if your heart for the word is mostly like the path, the rock, the thorns, or the good soil described in verses 4-15.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray that God would soften your heart for the word of God.

33 FRIDAY, MAY 21

READ Luke Chapter 9: Take up Your Cross and Follow Me

READING PROMPT In this chapter, Jesus says, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for a faith that follows after Christ regardless of the cost.

34 SATURDAY, MAY 22

READ Luke Chapter 10: The Person of Jesus Means More Than the Power of Jesus

READING PROMPT When the 72 return to Jesus in Luke 10v17-20, they rejoice more in the promise of heaven with Jesus than they do the power they had in Jesus’ name. It can often be easy to allow ourselves to value the benefits of the kingdom of God more than the God of the kingdom. Today, ask yourself if time with Jesus is as valuable to you as what Jesus could offer you in his power.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray that your heart would be more hungry for Jesus himself than what Jesus could do for you.

35 SUNDAY, MAY 23

READ Luke Chapter 11: The Lord’s Prayer

READING PROMPT The Lord’s prayer is often read through quickly, as it has become so familiar to people who have heard it before. Today, read through the Lord’s prayer as though you haven’t read through or heard it before.

PRAYER PROMPT Set aside a moment of time to slowly pray through the Lord’s prayer.

36 MONDAY, MAY 24

READ Luke Chapter 12: Eternal Perspective

READING PROMPT It is often easier to focus on the immediate than to consider the long term. Throughout Luke 12, Jesus is calling his followers to consider what investments will outlast retirement. As you read through Jesus’ words, think through what investment you’re mak- ing with your time, talents and finances. Is eternity with Christ as much of a priority in your life as your comfort is?

PRAYER PROMPT Pray that your eagerness for eternity with Christ would grow within you.

37 TUESDAY, MAY 25

READ Luke Chapter 13: Urgency in the Kingdom of God

READING PROMPT Reading through Luke 13 can almost seem saddening or con- cerning. Yet in this chapter, Jesus is stressing the urgency and immediacy of the Kingdom of God. Our eternity spent with God is something we choose to live into or avoid today.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray that life lived toward the kingdom of God would be on your mind in each interaction you have today.

38 WEDNESDAY, MAY 26

READ Luke Chapter 14: The Value of Discipleship

READING PROMPT Luke 14, verses 26-27 contain a striking statement about one’s love of family. Far more than being a statement about family rela- tionships, these verses are getting at the point that being a disci- ple of Christ has a massive impact on one’s identity, loyalties, and social ties. The value we place on discipleship produces a concern for the kingdom of God that far outweighs any cultural value.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray over the things you care deeply about that are tied to your culture. What might be preventing you from living fully into your identity as a of Christ?

39 THURSDAY, MAY 27

READ Luke Chapter 15: The Prodigal

READING PROMPT So often, we can just assume that people are ‘too far gone’ for the Spirit to work in their hearts. Luke 15 shows us that Jesus cares deeply for the one who has gone astray.

PRAYER PROMPT Today as you pray, intercede on behalf of the person in your life that seems ‘too far gone.’

40 FRIDAY, MAY 28

READ Luke Chapter 16: Two Masters

READING PROMPT Through the parable of the dishonest manager, Jesus makes the point that you cannot serve two masters, and you cannot serve both God and money.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray over what masters you might be serving above Jesus in life right now. Where are you looking for validation and security? Ask God to show you what it looks like to serve him above all else.

41 SATURDAY, MAY 29

READ Luke Chapter 17: Pay Attention to Yourself

READING PROMPT We naturally tend to care about ourselves more than others. In verse 3 of Luke 17, Jesus encourages his disciples to pay attention to themselves so that they would avoid causing others to fall into temptation. So much of our culture is centered on the next best thing and one-upping each other. But Jesus urges his followers to avoid living as though we are bait for the people around us to chase after, and instead live in a way that points them toward a gospel-centered life.

PRAYER PROMPT Today as you pray, confess to God the things you’ve wanted others to notice about you. In honesty with God, pray through the things you want others to envy. As you pray through these things, surrender to God your desire for others’ approval, and ask God to give you the restraint to serve those around you by living with a healthy awareness of yourself.

42 SUNDAY, MAY 30

READ Luke Chapter 18: The Rich Ruler

READING PROMPT In the story of the rich ruler, we see a person who had done ev- erything he could in an attempt to earn the reward of eternal life, and yet still valued his wealth more than life with Christ.

PRAYER PROMPT In prayer, ask God to reveal the things you value most in this life. Pray through what it would look like to use those things for the glory of Christ rather than your own immediate benefit.

43 MONDAY, MAY 31

READ Luke Chapter 19: A Humble Entrance

READING PROMPT Much of the highlights Jesus’ journey from to . In this chapter, Jesus finally arrives at Jerusalem and enters the city in an incredibly humble way.

PRAYER PROMPT Thank God for his heart for humanity, and his willingness to love us in such a humble way.

44 TUESDAY, JUNE 1

READ Luke Chapter 20: The Image of God

READING PROMPT As the religious leaders attempt to trap Jesus with a question about taxes and the authority of Caesar, they are caught by sur- prise when Jesus responds by saying, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Jesus’ words would have been striking as coins and money had the image of Caesar on them, but mankind has been made in the image of God. When Jesus makes this statement, he’s calling for a life that is holistically devoted to God.

PRAYER PROMPT As you pray today, pray that your life would be a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God (Romans 12v1).

45 WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2

READ Luke Chapter 21: A Generous Heart

READING PROMPT The story of the widow’s offering captures the reality that God is not impressed by large checks or grandiose gestures. God is far more concerned with the state of the heart than he is the outward appearance.

PRAYER PROMPT Reflect on your heart before God. Have you been trying to im- press him or others with public appearances, or have you come to him in humble adoration. Today, pray that your affections would be pointed toward God in all things, regardless of appearances.

46 THURSDAY, JUNE 3

READ Luke Chapter 22: Communion and Priorities

READING PROMPT Right after Jesus has communion with the disciples, they are caught up in a debate about which one of them is the greatest. It’s almost comical, and yet can be so easy to fall into ourselves. We can have a moment in prayer with the Holy Spirit, only to fol- low it up by comparing ourselves to others for the rest of the day.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for a kingdom-centered focus that outweighs a focus on yourself today.

47 FRIDAY, JUNE 4

READ Luke Chapter 23: The Criminal on the Cross

READING PROMPT In the final moments leading up to Jesus’ death, Jesus chose to spend a moment of his time listening and responding to the criminal on the other cross. In this interaction we see that Jesus continued to have a high value for the people in front of him even to his death, and we see that it is never too late to respond to the gospel.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray that you would be aware of the people in front of you regardless of the things going on in your life, and consider the grace of God displayed on the cross in prayer.

48 SATURDAY, JUNE 5

READ Luke Chapter 24: The Resurrection

READING PROMPT Through the resurrection, we see that Jesus is who he says he is.

PRAYER PROMPT Rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus today.

49 MARK

OVERVIEW

Mark is written towards a primarily non-Jewish audience and is in- credibly action-oriented. Jesus is understood as the Messiah and Son of God, whose death and resurrection paid the penalty for our sins and achieved victory over Satan, sin, and death. With this joyful announcement comes the call to all believers for faith and cross-bearing discipleship.

The first half of Mark’s gospel highlights the identity of Jesus as Messiah and Son of God. The second half (beginning in :31) emphasizes the mission of Jesus as the suffering servant of the Lord. Shockingly, the Messiah is not here to conquer the Roman legions but to suffer and die as an atoning sacrifice for sins. Mark writes to show that Jesus’ crucifixion does not negate his claim to be the Mes- siah, but rather affirms it! His faithfulness to this mission becomes the model for all discipleship. Following Jesus means denying yourself, taking up your cross, and following him.

50 SUNDAY, JUNE 6

READ Mark Chapter 1: The Arrival

READING PROMPT In this first chapter of Mark, notice the identity of Jesus being es- tablished as both the long awaited Messiah, and the Son of God. It is the authority of Jesus - to heal, restore, cast out demons, for- give and teach - that reveals the truth of his nature and character to everyone who encounters him.

PRAYER PROMPT How have you seen the nature and character of God revealed in your life? Through teaching (the , sermons, etc.)? Through prayer? Through healing? Through experiencing forgiveness or freedom from demonic oppression? Spend a few minutes in grati- tude, writing out how you have seen God’s nature and character in your life.

51 MONDAY, JUNE 7

READ Mark Chapter 2: The Outcasts

READING PROMPT As you read the second chapter of Mark, pay attention to who is offended by what Jesus says and does, and who responds with joy and celebration.

PRAYER PROMPT Jesus says, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor - sick people do. I have not come to call those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” In our culture, we always want to believe we are the “good guys” or the heroes in every story. Yet the people who truly delight in the presence of God are almost never the stereotypical “heroes.” As you consider this chapter, which character(s) do you most see yourself in? Why do you believe that to be the case?

52 TUESDAY, JUNE 8

READ Mark Chapter 3: The Calling

READING PROMPT Jesus spends the majority of this chapter bringing freedom to people - healing disease and deformity, casting out demons and restoring wholeness to lives - but he does this in the face of op- position from the religious, confusion from his family and amidst accusations that he is possessed by the devil. As you read, pay attention to how Jesus is able to continually assert the truth of his identity and mission as being grounded in his identity in God.

PRAYER PROMPT Invite God to remind you of your identity in him alone today. Ask him to show you how your value, mission and purpose on this earth are grounded in him alone. Speak the truth aloud of being a daughter or son of the King and practice reminding yourself today that you are not what you do; you are not what you have, and you are not what others say that you are. You are a chosen, loved and desired child of God!

53 WEDNESDAY, JUNE 9

READ Mark Chapter 4: The Parables

READING PROMPT Across this chapter, Jesus teaches to the masses in parables; sto- ries used to explain or illustrate incredible kingdom truths. Verses 10-13 are the hinge for the entire chapter as Jesus explains that everything he says and does can only be understood in light of God himself. We see that to know and hear God one must live a life that is both surrendered to him and spent actively listening for his voice.

PRAYER PROMPT We don’t somehow “solve” God, instead we learn more and more about his nature and character as we examine the life of Je- sus and spend time in his presence. Today, set aside some time to simply be still in the presence of God. Allow yourself to rest here, with no agenda or hurry and see how God speaks to you (and yes, it’s ok if you don’t “hear” anything, this is part of a life-long practice).

54 THURSDAY, JUNE 10

READ Mark Chapter 5: The Power

READING PROMPT We see Jesus healing both out of mercy and in response to faith, and often it is the unexpected people (the outsiders) who receive this healing. Why do you think it’s the “insiders” who seem to miss what Jesus is doing, even as he preaches, heals and serves the people he encounters?

PRAYER PROMPT It’s easy to mock the and the religious of Jesus’ time as we read of their arrogance and ignorance. But how often are we the arrogant and ignorant? How easy is it for us to believe we are the ones who have it “solved” and are doing it “right?” Set aside some time today and pray through Psalm 139:23-24 // Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. Allow the Spirit to reveal any pride or arrogance you may be harboring and not even aware of in your life. Then spend a few minutes in confession and repen- tance, allowing God to heal and encourage you!

55 FRIDAY, JUNE 11

READ Mark Chapter 6: The Authority

READING PROMPT This chapter highlights Jesus walking in the full authority of God as we see his absolute dominion over all teaching, every piece of nature, every sickness, disease and evil spirits. Mark wants there to be absolutely no doubt in his reader’s minds that Jesus is fully God and that there is nothing beyond his power nor outside his authority.

PRAYER PROMPT Where in your life do you need to see the power and authority of God move in a new way? This same power that Jesus walked in is available to his people, to you and I, today through the Holy Spirit! In prayer today, invite God into those areas of frustration, struggle, hurt, addiction, pain or sin. He is our healer, our hope, our provider and our protector, yesterday, today and forever. Allow some time to simply sit in that truth as you pray today.

56 SATURDAY, JUNE 12

READ Mark Chapter 7: The Hypocrites

READING PROMPT In this segment, we see the character of God revealed through Jesus, in a series of encounters with people at opposite ends of the social, economic and political spectrum. Again, it is the proud who are humbled, and the humble who are lifted up. It is the arrogant who are called out, and the unassuming who are called up! The only time Jesus is declared as “Lord” in Mark’s entire gospel, it comes from the lips of a Gentile woman - someone who would have been unseen at best, and hated at worst. Notice that God doesn’t just see the people society ignores, he actively uses them to advance his kingdom on earth!

PRAYER PROMPT Ask the Spirit to open your eyes to the people you tend to move right past in your daily life. Is it a cashier? The crossing guard? A coworker? The person on the corner with the sign asking for help? Whoever it is, ask that the Spirit would help you truly see them as an image bearer of God and then honor and dignify them accordingly.

57 SUNDAY, JUNE 13

READ Mark Chapter 8: The Pivot

READING PROMPT Chapter 8 is the pivot for Mark’s gospel. Jesus identity as the Messiah is finally declared by those closest to him! But the mo- ment Jesus begins to explain that part of his calling is to die, those same followers begin to lecture him! It is clear they don’t yet understand what the way of the cross is, or what it will ultimately cost to follow Jesus.

PRAYER PROMPT Even with the full Word of God in front of us, how often do we still find ourselves “lecturing” God when we don’t understand his plans, or when he isn’t operating on our time table? Jesus makes it clear that following Him is not for the faint of heart! Take some time in prayer today and ask God what it could look like for you to “lose your life” for the sake of Christ and Gospel. Is there something he is inviting you to surrender? O perhaps it’s some- thing he wants you to step into, to begin doing, as you follow Him.

58 MONDAY, JUNE 14

READ Mark Chapter 9: The Prediction

READING PROMPT Across this chapter, Jesus explains and models what the Kingdom of God looks like as it breaks into the world. There is incredible freedom and incredible power, but there is also incredible cost. In spite of hearing the words of Jesus and watching his example, the disciples continue to misunderstand the purpose and power in this new kingdom.

PRAYER PROMPT At some level our faith is always shaped and influenced by things like our culture, background, family of origin and upbringing. This is not a bad thing, but we always want to bounce those beliefs and understandings off of God’s Word and see if they match up. As you read the words of Jesus, how would you describe the kingdom he explains? Is that how you would have described it? Allow a few moments for God to show you anywhere your vision for his kingdom doesn’t align with his vision, and then ask for a refreshed perspective as you move into your day.

59 TUESDAY, JUNE 15

READ Mark Chapter 10: The Upside Down Kingdom

READING PROMPT The Kingdom of God is often described as being the “upside down kingdom” because it reverses nearly every value system our kingdoms operate by. It values serving over titles, generosity over acquisition and humans inherently have value as an image bearer of God, not because of their position in society or their possessions. As you read this chapter notice how Jesus elevates the status of people who had none, and turns the values of the culture upside down!

PRAYER PROMPT Take some time today to write out what your personal values are and what you see valued in our culture, city and the Church. What things or ideas sit in positions of influence in your own mind and heart, and in the spaces around you? Celebrate the things you see that match up with the words and actions of Jesus in this chapter and look for ways to bring those things to life throughout your day.

60 WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16

READ Mark Chapter 11: The Arrival

READING PROMPT As Jesus enters Jerusalem, people’s expectations of him reach a fever pitch. The disciples are planning for their future roles on his staff, the people see a savior who will free them and the religious elite see a threat to their faith and lifestyle. Yet, Jesus conforms to no-one’s expectations of him, instead declaring his royal authority over the temple and the Church.

PRAYER PROMPT Expectations are not a bad thing, but often we go through life without ever examining what are underlying expectations are. When you think of God and his role in your life, what expectations do you have of him? What do you believe he can do, and what do you think he should be doing? Pray through those things. Are they based in scripture? If so, where do you see them? If not, why do you think you believe them?

61 THURSDAY, JUNE 17

READ Mark Chapter 12: The Most Important Commandment

READING PROMPT In this chapter, the religious leaders confront Jesus at every turn in an attempt to trip him up, prove he is not the Messiah and dis- credit him with the people. However, they are continually thwart- ed as the power of Jesus’ teaching is undeniable. There is no topic he does not speak with authority to, and no sleight of hand nor trick of language can disprove the truth of who he is.

PRAYER PROMPT Allow yourself to examine the truth that Jesus is who he says he is. If he truly is our savior, redeemer and lord over all of creation, time and space, what does that mean for you today? How does that change how you make decision today? What about how you interact with God and the people you will encounter today? What freedom does it bring you?

62 FRIDAY, JUNE 18

READ Mark Chapter 13: The Future

READING PROMPT This entire section is devoted to Jesus telling his disciples what lies ahead of them; the destruction of the city and temple, their own persecution and one day, the return of Jesus. He tells them what to expect so that they will stay alert, on guard and focused on continuing the mission he has begun, and will be handing over to them.

PRAYER PROMPT When you think of the “mission of God” what comes to your mind? How do you fit into the work of restoration God is doing on this earth? As you walk through your day, ask the Spirit to open your eyes to how he wants to use you in the renewal and resto- ration of the people and creation around you!

63 SATURDAY, JUNE 19

READ Mark Chapter 14: The New Sacrifice

READING PROMPT Jesus looks towards his betrayal and death across chapter 14. At the he takes the history of the day and the mean- ing associated with Passover (the liberation of the Israelites from slavery through the death of the Passover Lamb) and redefines it as the liberation from sin and death, now available to all people, through the death of the Messiah.

PRAYER PROMPT As you pray today, allow yourself to sit in the breathtaking depth of love that God has for you. He chose to go to the cross as the payment for our sin, knowing full well the weight of suffering that lay before him. Purely out of love, love for us and love for the Fa- ther, Jesus allows himself to be captured and taken to his death. What does it look like for us live in response to that love today?

64 SUNDAY, JUNE 20

READ Mark Chapter 15: The Death

READING PROMPT Watch how pride wreaks havoc on the human heart in this chap- ter. The priests were too proud to acknowledge God physically in their midst, Pilate was too proud to stand against the wishes of the crowd in spite of seeing their corruption; the crowd, the soldiers, the people passing by, all of them were so convinced of their own righteousness that they put the Son of God to death. In fact, it is only a Roman soldier, an outsider and even an “enemy” of the people, who grasps who Jesus truly is; that this Jesus of is the crucified son of God, the Messiah.

PRAYER PROMPT Ask God to reveal a blindspot, or place of pride in your life to- day. Perhaps there is someone you wouldn’t ordinarily turn to for input who could speak truth into your life. Pray for on opportunity to simply listen today, and the patience and grace to be present to that moment!

65 MONDAY, JUNE 21

READ Mark Chapter 16: The Resurrection

READING PROMPT The oldest manuscripts we have end at verse 8. In light of how the rest of the book is written, it seems that this abrupt ending is intentional, emphasizing the shocking claim that this crucified and risen Jesus is the Messiah, savior of the world! This then confronts us, as the reader, to ask how we will respond. Will we run away like the disciples? Or will we recognize Jesus as our king and go and tell the Good News to the world?

PRAYER PROMPT This is an amazing opportunity to examine what we actually believe about Jesus as Savior and Lord. As you pray today, con- sider what it looks like to share the Good News with the people, situations and creation you encounter today!

66 MATTHEW

OVERVIEW

We often imagine life in Christ as a dramatic shift away from ev- erything we know. This romanticized idea of what it means to know and follow Jesus is not, however, what we find when we actually look at his life. From start to finish, Matthew’s gospel account is composed of ordinary moments that point to an extraordinary God. Throughout Matthew’s depiction of Jesus’ life, we get a glimpse into Jesus’ faithfulness in the mundane. Matthew brings to life the reality that the story of Jesus is not formed by an exotic trip or by evading reality; the story of Jesus is formed through small, ordinary, and faith-filled moments that result in monumental shifts over time.

67 TUESDAY, JUNE 22

READ Matthew Chapter 1: An Extraordinary Interruption

READING PROMPT The first chapter of Matthew’s gospel account captures the very heart of the book altogether. In this chapter, we read through a family line composed of normal people who had everyday issues and circumstances. Yet when Jesus is introduced, he enters the story in a remarkable and extraordinary way. Jesus is at once a member of a normal family line, and also a magnificent interrup- tion. By drawing our attention to this fact, Matthew suggests that Jesus did not come to this world to avoid the real everyday life is- sues, but to enter into them in a way that makes all things new. As you read through the genealogy and birth of Jesus, think through how the various people and moments might point to how Jesus interrupts the normal everyday lives of those around him.

PRAYER PROMPT As you pray today, ask God what ordinary things in your life might need to be made new. Take a moment to pray dangerous prayers as you ask God to reveal the areas of your life you have grown comfortable in. Prayerfully reflect on what kind of employ- ee, student, spouse, or friend you have been recently as you ask God to align your heart with his in all things.

68 WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23

READ Matthew Chapter 2: Pride and Humility

READING PROMPT As you read through the second chapter of Matthew, notice where Herod’s pride leads him. In his effort to maintain his authority and power, he surrenders his character to retain the im- portance of his name. Yet in the same chapter, Joseph and Mary demonstrate great humility as they repeatedly listen to what God calls them into, at the cost of their reputations.

PRAYER PROMPT Today, pray for a humble heart before God. Ask that God might show you the areas in your life where you are prideful. Ask that God would grow your humility for the betterment of the communi- ty around you.

69 THURSDAY, JUNE 24

READ Matthew Chapter 3: Jesus’ Ministry is Introduced

READING PROMPT In the third chapter of Matthew, John the Baptist is caught off guard by Jesus’ request to be baptized. Why would the righteous messiah need to participate in the baptism of repentance? Here, as Jesus is baptized, we see the Spirit descend on Jesus and the Father’s delight in Jesus. In this very moment, we see that Jesus acts as both the continuation of God’s mission toward our resto- ration and as the humble servant-king who enters into the very experiences we walk through ourselves. With Jesus’ coronation depicted by God’s approval and the focus on Jesus as servant, we are able to read though the remaining portion of Matthew with this view of Jesus in mind.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray that God would grow your passion for his mission in this world, and for a servant’s heart toward those around you.

70 FRIDAY, JUNE 25

READ Matthew Chapter 4: Jesus is Tempted

READING PROMPT In the temptation of Jesus, we get a glimpse into the reality that Jesus endured the very things we walk through ourselves both in the positive areas () and in the difficult (). In these difficult moments, Jesus depends not on his own strength, but on the weight of Scripture. Through his appeal to memorized Scripture, Jesus is able to walk through temptation without giving in to the power of sin.

PRAYER PROMPT Reflect on the areas of consistent temptation in your life. Do you find yourself fighting against the ease of gossip, the presence of pride and arrogance, an inclination to judge the people around you, or deeply rooted insecurities? Once you have your areas of struggle in mind, look up Scriptures that you can commit to mem- ory to recall when you find yourself in the midst of those difficult moments. Pray that God would remind you of those Scriptures in the moments you need them.

71 SATURDAY, JUNE 26

READ Matthew Chapter 5: The

READING PROMPT Throughout , Jesus’ words point at what exists beneath our actions. In this chapter, we see that God is concerned for the state of our hearts just as much as he is the actions of our hands.

PRAYER PROMPT Prayerfully reflect on what your life looks like externally and internally. What areas of your heart might need to be reoriented toward Christ?

72 SUNDAY, JUNE 27

READ Matthew Chapter 6: The Lord’s Prayer

READING PROMPT It can often be easy to skip over or breeze through the Lord’s prayer. Perhaps it seems too familiar, or perhaps it seems too foreign. Either way, the Lord’s prayer can reveal so much to us about God’s heart for humanity.

PRAYER PROMPT Today, set aside a portion of time to walk through the Lord’s prayer with intentionality. Read the Lord’s Prayer one line at a time as you prayerfully reflect on the weight and significance of each phrase.

73 MONDAY, JUNE 28

READ Matthew Chapter 7: A Genuine Response

READING PROMPT In verses 24-26, Jesus’ words present a striking reality. In similar fashion to the Lord’s prayer, the Sermon on the Mount can be easy to read through and even to resonate with one moment, only to be forgotten the next, as we place the Bible back on the shelf. In verses 24-26, Jesus asserts that the righteous way of living calls for more than just our good intentions.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for an understanding of where your good intentions haven’t quite made it to a lived-out reality. Ask that God would remind you of your intentions in the moments you have the opportunity to live into your belief.

74 TUESDAY, JUNE 29

READ Matthew Chapter 8: Discipleship

READING PROMPT emphasizes the radical call of discipleship, and this radical call requires a radical response. Throughout this chapter, Matthew claims that following Jesus is an all or nothing matter.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for a radical faith in response to Jesus’ radical call for disci- pleship.

75 WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30

READ Matthew Chapter 9: The Harvest is Plentiful

READING PROMPT Verses 35-38 of Mathew 9 make the point that while the harvest of ministry is plentiful, the workers for the sake of the gospel are few.

PRAYER PROMPT In verse 38 Jesus says, “… pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Today, pray that God would do exactly that.

76 THURSDAY, JULY 1

READ Matthew Chapter 10: A Perspective Set on Eternity

READING PROMPT Jesus’ words throughout point to the reality that the suffering and hardship we experience here are not how the story ends. Persecution and difficulty find their context not in the midst of the hardship, but in light of eternity with Christ. This reality does not minimize grief or the importance of honesty in these difficult moments, but instead reassures us of the value and truth of the gospel in the face of the brokenness we experience in this world.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for an assurance from Christ rather than from your circum- stances. Pray that God would move in this world so that others may know the weight of eternity.

77 FRIDAY, JULY 2

READ Matthew Chapter 11: “My Yoke is Easy and my Burden is Light”

READING PROMPT verses 28-30, Jesus confronts the inner toil and restless- ness that comes from trying to bear the weight of life on your own. Striving for success in life apart from Christ only produces fatigue and frustration. In these verses, Jesus reminds his listener that, in him, rest and surety are secure.

PRAYER PROMPT Have you become worn out? Have you been striving for approval, acceptance, and self-assuredness? Pray that you would walk through life near to the Father, and that in Jesus you would find rest. It is only in Jesus that we find an easy yoke and a light burden.

78 SATURDAY, JULY 3

READ Matthew Chapter 12: Stale Religion

READING PROMPT In , the Pharisees are so caught up in their religious customs and rules that they are unable to love the person in front of them. It can often be easy to look down on the Pharisees for the lack of love they displayed for those around them, but the reality is that we often get caught up in ourselves just as easily.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for an awareness of those around you. Ask that God would remind you of the people in your life you often pass over in the midst of your schedule and hurried days.

79 SUNDAY, JULY 4

READ Matthew Chapter 13: Sell the Farm

READING PROMPT verses 44-46 paint a vivid image of what it looks like to have an accurate understanding of what investing in the king- dom of God means for how we understand everything around us.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for a “sell the farm” kind of faith.

80 MONDAY, JULY 5

READ Matthew Chapter 14: Peter Walks on Water

READING PROMPT As the disciples encounter Jesus walking on water, Peter jumps at the chance to walk on water out to where he had seen Jesus. Peter’s walk serves as an example of great faith, and yet the moment he falls into the water serves as an example of how easy it is to return to a natural human perspective.

PRAYER PROMPT Ask that God would remind you of what a faith-filled perspective might look like for you today.

81 TUESDAY, JULY 6

READ Matthew Chapter 15: The One And The Many

READING PROMPT In his encounters with the Canaanite woman, the many who he heals, and the many who he feeds, Jesus is aware of both the individual in front of him and the group as a whole.

PRAYER PROMPT What could it look like to emulate this aspect of Jesus in your life? What areas of your life do you focus so much on the group that you miss the individuals around you, and in what areas of your life might you be so focused on an individual that you lose sight of the larger group? Pray that you would be able to walk with an awareness of those around you.

82 WEDNESDAY, JULY 7

READ Matthew Chapter 16: The Resurrection and Suffering

READING PROMPT After Jesus looks forward to his resurrection, he makes clear that suffering in this world finds its context in light of eternity. While we might encounter great hardship and difficulty, our hope is found in the resurrection of Christ. All that we could gain here in this world pales in comparison to the weight of eternity. Similarly, everything we may lose here in this world pales in comparison to the weight of eternity.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray that God would bring comfort to someone you know going through a season of great difficulty.

83 THURSDAY, JULY 8

READ Matthew Chapter 17: The Transfiguration

READING PROMPT As he witnesses Jesus being transfigured, Peter is so caught up in the moment that he offers to set up tents on the mountain. In the very moment he makes this suggestion, God reminds the disciples of Jesus’ authority and tells them to listen to him. In Peter, we can see a glimpse of ourselves. It can be appealing to think of our faith as only our own. It can be as though we believe our interac- tions with Jesus were intended to be hidden in our story, and we often end up keeping who we know Jesus to be to ourselves.

PRAYER PROMPT Our faith was never intended to be limited to what we want from it. Faith in Jesus flows into every area of our lives- including our relationships. Pray for insight into what it might look like to follow and listen to Jesus in areas that might make you uncomfortable.

84 FRIDAY, JULY 9

READ Matthew Chapter 18: The Parable of the Lost Sheep

READING PROMPT God’s heart to pursue the one who has gone astray is illustrat- ed through the parable of the lost sheep in Matthew 18v10-14. God’s love doesn’t expire when we choose to run after our own way. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

PRAYER PROMPT Perhaps you or someone you know is running after their own way right now. Pray that God would work in your heart or in the heart of the person that comes to your mind to reveal his glory in a poignant way.

85 SATURDAY, JULY 10

READ Matthew Chapter 19: The Rich Young Man

READING PROMPT The rich young man illustrates the reality that it can be easy to value something more than we value Christ himself. Wether it be money, people, or our personal dreams and ambitions, Jesus is not interested in being your secondary love.

PRAYER PROMPT What things, people, or dreams might you be valuing more than Christ right now? Come to God in confession through prayer today, and ask him to reorient your perspective toward him in all things.

86 SUNDAY, JULY 11

READ Matthew Chapter 20: Comparison

READING PROMPT The first portion of is a parable about a group of workers in a vineyard. In this parable, workers are lovely con- cerned with measuring the wages they receive based on their work. What the workers believed they were entitled to got in the way of their contentedness. Their comparison of themselves to the other workers robs them of the joy they could have experienced.

PRAYER PROMPT What areas of your life are you lacking contentedness in? Could comparison with the people around you be adding to your dis- contentment? Today, pray for the success and flourishing of the people you are most inclined to compare yourself to.

87 MONDAY, JULY 12

READ Matthew Chapter 21: Jesus’ Entrance Makes a Statement

READING PROMPT When Jesus enters the city on a donkey, cleanses the temple, and curses the fig tree he knows fully well the statement he is making to both the crowds and the religious leaders. Jesus is aware that his actions will communicate to the masses that he is entering Jerusalem as their messianic king. This statement would have produced one of two responses; either the people would believe that Jesus was who he said he was, or the religious leaders would have to confront him about the statement he was making.

PRAYER PROMPT Who do you believe Jesus to be? Do you think he is who he claimed to be, or something less? There is no room for placing Jesus anywhere in-between. If you’re wrestling through who you think Jesus is, prayerfully consider how you would answer this question throughout your day. If you are confident in affirming that Jesus is who he said he is, pray that the belief of others around you would continue to grow.

88 TUESDAY, JULY 13

READ Matthew Chapter 22: Love God and Love Your Neighbor

READING PROMPT When asked about the greatest commandment, Jesus responds by saying the greatest commandment is to love God with all of your heart, soul, and mind. The second greatest commandment, he continues, is to love your neighbor as yourself. When we think about loving God, we commonly isolate our love for him to one of these three parts of ourselves. Perhaps we think about God often, but our hearts aren’t as engaged. Maybe we love God with our heart, but our minds have become uninvolved in our love for him. In this disproportionate love for God, we are incapable of truly loving our neighbor.

PRAYER PROMPT Prayerfully reflect on what part of yourself has been lacking in your love for God. Pray that your love for God would overflow into how you approach loving those around you.

89 WEDNESDAY, JULY 14

READ Matthew Chapter 23: White Washed Tombs

READING PROMPT In the twenty-third chapter of Matthew, Jesus confronts the Pharisees. At one point, Jesus refers to the Pharisees as “White washed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and uncleanness.” These white washed tombs would cover the hillsides and, while nice to look at, were only covering up the grave-yard that existed within them. Jesus’ words to the Pharisees aren’t exactly pulling any punches. But as we read about the Pharisees’ hypocrisy and self-righteous- ness, we should not distance ourselves from them entirely. The reality is that we are more similar to the Pharisees in their sin than we are to Jesus in his perfection.

PRAYER PROMPT Where in your life could someone refer to you as a “White washed tomb” and be correct about you? Pray that God would bring life to the parts of you that have seemed to die off. Is your heart worn out? Has your trust in meaningful friendships been robbed from you? Have your work ethic and motivation seemed absent in your life? Ask that Jesus would enter into whatever these spaces of your life might be.

90 THURSDAY, JULY 15

READ Matthew Chapter 24: The End Times

READING PROMPT Reading through a portion of Scripture like can leave one feeling confused, expectant, fearful, or eager to dive into deep thought. Regardless of what feeling this passage evokes in you, our hope is not in the details of how the end times will play out. When Jesus says, “Only the Father knows”, he makes the point that our confidence isn’t found in the specifics of the end times, but in God alone.

PRAYER PROMPT What does it mean to you when you consider the hope we have in God alone? Pray that the world would experience the hope found only in the gospel of Christ.

91 FRIDAY, JULY 16

READ Matthew Chapter 25: Living on Mission

READING PROMPT In Matthew 25v1-13, we see through the parable that readiness is not the result of last minute preparation. In verses 14-30, we see that a fear of doing something wrong shouldn’t keep us from doing something. And in the remaining section of , it is clear that Jesus calls for a lived out faith in the life of the believ- er. As you read through the 25th chapter of Matthew, reflect on what areas of your faith and life you may be reluctant to act in out of a fear of failure.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray for boldness in your faith and in your relationships. Ask that God would give you discernment in the rooms you enter and in the relationships you have with the people around you.

92 SATURDAY, JULY 17

READ Matthew Chapter 26: Impossible Prayers

READING PROMPT Jesus’ prayer in Matthew 26v39 reveals much about Jesus, the mission of God, the heart of the Father, and so much more. One striking thing this prayer reveals is the boldness with which we are invited to approach the Father in prayer. Jesus prays what seems to be an impossible prayer.

PRAYER PROMPT What impossible things have you given up on asking God for? What have you written off in your life? Perhaps the answer won’t look like what you might choose on your own, but consider taking these things to God in prayer today.

93 MONDAY, JULY 18

READ Matthew Chapter 27: Barabbas

READING PROMPT The story of the crowds choosing to have Barabbas released and Jesus crucified is heart breaking. Here in this passage, the righteous and sinless one takes the place of the prisoner so that the prisoner may go free. This is the reality not just for Barabbas, but for ourselves as well. By grace through faith, Jesus takes our place so that we may be free from the weight of our sin.

PRAYER PROMPT Today, reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made on your behalf with godly sorrow. The story of the crucifixion is weighty- and rightfully so. Nevertheless, in this deep sorrow we are also met with a re- markable hope through the story of the cross. Prayerfully mourn and rejoice in the truth of the cross today.

94 TUESDAY, JULY 19

READ Matthew Chapter 28: The

READING PROMPT Jesus commands his followers to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that he had command- ed them.

PRAYER PROMPT Pray that God’s name would be known in every nation, that peo- ple would believe in the truth of who Jesus is.
