Photo Release September 23, 2013 Summit Christian Academy 1500 SW Jefferson Lee’s Summit, MO 64081 Contact: Chantele Ferguson (816) 525.1480 Summit Christian Academy Welcomes Willie Aikens (Lee’s Summit, MO) – Summit Christian Academy (SCA) recently welcomed retired Major League Baseball first baseman Willie Aikens to speak to a 6th grade class. Willie Mays Aikens, one of baseball’s top hitters, played for the Kansas City Royals from 1979 to 1983. Aikens’ performance in the 1980 World Series with the Royals made him the first player in World Series history to hit two home runs in the same game twice during the World Series. However, the legend’s struggle with drugs and alcohol led to jail time, and in 1984, the Royals traded Aikens to the Toronto Blue Jays, where he played until 1985. “This is the first time a professional athlete has come to our class for show-and-tell,” said Mrs. Green. SCA 6th grader Clayton Leighty asked Aikens, a long-time family friend, to share with the class. For Aikens, sharing with students about his experiences as a major league baseball player included much of his experiences off the field. “Poor choices” and drug abuse led to heartaches and a 20-year prison sentence for Aikens. “I made some bad decisions in my life,” said Aikens. “You have to know that eVery decision leads to consequences. Now is the time to decide to make good choices,” said Aikens. “It’s hard to hear about his life before,” said Betsy Keilers, mother of Leighty and Aikens’ friend. “I just know the man he is now, and he’s a good man and a good husband and father.” Keilers and Aikens met at a Kansas City Royals eVent for former Royals players in 2009. Aikens shared with the class that while serVing his 20-year sentence, he changed his life. “While in prison, I read my Bible and recommitted my life to Jesus Christ. I hung around men who were doing the right things,” said Aikens. “I’Ve been clean for more than 20 years. That’s longer than you (students) have been alive. It’s never too early to decide to do what’s right,” Aikens said. A lawyer by trade, Kuhn oversaw the introduction of free agency, the addition of six clubs, and World Series games played at night. Kuhn was born October 28, 1926, a descendant of famous frontiersman Jim Bowie.

MICHAEL JACK SCHMIDT Ohio ’71 Oxford Cup Roll Nº 023 In more than 2,000 games, spanning 18 years with the Philadelphia Phillies, Mi- chael Jack Schmidt, Ohio ’71, helped lead the team to five division titles, two Na- tional League pennants and two World Series. He also claimed individual honors as Most Valuable Player three times, including MVP for the 1980 World Series; won 10 Gold Gloves and led the league in home runs eight times. Elected to the All-Star team 12 times, he finished his career ranked seventh on the all-time home run list and held 14 major league records, 24 Phillies career re- cords and 11 Phillies season records. He was “1980s Player of the Decade” and was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995, his first year of eligibility. Following retirement, Mike broadcast games on PRISM, bringing insight and hu- mor to a behind-the-scenes look at the game. He is a partner and patron of the fa- mous Mike Schmidt’s, a sports Philadelphia cafe whose motif highlights his Phillies career, and “Mike Schmidt’s Philadelphia Hoagies”, bringing the best in “fan food” to the Philadelphia area. The Norman J. Hubner Athletic Hall of Fame
THE NORMAN J. HUBNER ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Ron “Doc” Reed was one of the finest three-sport athletes ever produced at LaPorte High School. Standing 6-6, he made a great target as a football end, was an excellent scorer and rebounder in basketball and a power pitcher in baseball. After graduating from LPHS in 1961, he attended the University of Notre Dame to play basketball and baseball and had a particularly outstanding career on the hardwood. In 1965 Reed signed a contract with the Milwaukee Braves - who later moved to Atlanta, Ga. - as a free agent and had a brief minor league career. From 1965-67 he also filled the key sixth-man role for the Detroit Pistons and could have had a successful NBA career had he not chosen to concentrate on baseball. He made his debut for the Braves on Sept. 26, 1966. In 1968 he made the National League All-Star team and in 1969 he had his best-ever record (18-10), helping Atlanta win its first division title. On April 8, 1974 he was the winning pitcher as Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s record with his 715th career home run. He spent part of 1975 with the St. Louis Cardinals. He then had eight very successful years as a relief pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies. A fierce competitor, he had 17 saves and a brilliant 2.23 ERA in 1978. One year later he led the majors with 13 wins in relief. He was a key member of the Phillies’ 1980 World Series champions and the 1983 World Series runner-up.

O'HiIAR* Elite professional athletes seem to commit violent crimes with dis- tressing frequency.' The names Mike Tyson, Rae Carruth, Jason Kidd, and Marty McSorley will immediately suggest to sports fans the variety and seriousness of the criminal behavior of such athletes. While there is no clear evidence that sports stars - who are predominantly young and 2 male - break the law any more frequently than other young males, there is at least a common perception that violent crime by athletes is on the rise.3 As sports pages increasingly come to resemble a crime blotter, critics often argue that the criminal justice system does a poor job of handling cases involving athletes.
