This research uses individual-level, nationally representative survey data to provide a demographic description of lesbian parents in the United States, and to examine the most common pathways to parenthood followed by those who currently identify as lesbian. This paper explores the extent to which residing in ''nontraditional'' sibling compositions (i.e., living with step- and/or half-siblings) explains the relationship between academic disadvantage and step-family living, and confirms the importance of considering the composition of a young person's entire residential family unit.

Brewster, K. L., Tillman, K. H., & Holway, G. V. (2016). Initiation of Oral Sex and Coitus in Emerging Adulthood: Sexual Sequencing in a Recent National Sample.

Manuscript in Preparation. Anticipated submission by end of Spring 2016. This study examines patterns of early sexual experience, as defined by engagement in and ordering of first oral sex and first coitus, by gender, race/ethnicity and age for youths aged 15 to 24. Dr. Karin L. Brewster is a colleague in Sociology at Florida State University. At the time the study was begun, Dr. Giuseppina Valle Holway was a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at Florida State University. She is now an Assistant Professor of Demography at the University of Texas at San Antonio. After an R&R from Journal of Adolescent Health, the paper was rejected in Fall 2015. We are currently revising it for a new submission.

Manuscript in preparation. This study examines the relationship between family structure and several key measures of family functioning among adolescents of different immigrant status groups. Dr. Giuseppina Valle Holway, a former graduate student of mine, is currently an Assistant Professor of Demography at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Tillman, K. H., & Miller, B. (2016). The Bridge Kids: Exploring the Effects of Interracial Romance on Mental Health.

This is a project with my former student and colleague, Dr. Byron Miller (Miami University). It will entail both quantitative and qualitative data collection and is expected to lead to multiple publications. We intend to share equally the lead author role on these publications. To date, we have received IRB approval from both FSU and Miami University (Ohio) for our data collection plans, Dr. Miller has secured two small internal grants from the Miami University to help finance the project, and data collection commenced in Fall 2015. Data collection and cleaning will continue through Spring 2016.

Manuscript in preparation. This paper documents the characteristics of the communities in which youth of different immigrant generations live and examines the relationship of those characteristics with the likelihood that young people who graduate from a U.S. high school will enroll in college. Dr. Byron Miller, a former graduate student of mine, is currently an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Miami University in Hamilton (Ohio).

Manuscript in preparation. This study examines the conceptualization and measurement of parent-child family boundary ambiguity (FBA), a situation in which family members do not have a clear understanding or agreement about which individuals are included in their family.
