BR. MICKEY MCGRATH

BROTHER MICKEY O’NEILL MCGRATH, an Oblate of St. , is an award- winning artist, author, story-teller, and speaker. His most recent book, GO TO , published by World Library Publications in 2013, is a collection of paintings and reflections on the father of Jesus. A celebration of male , it includes essays and prayers written by guest writers, most of whom are husbands and fathers. Bro. Mickey is a popular presenter and keynote speaker at conferences, parishes, and retreat centers throughout the and . Using his own paintings and the stories which inspired them, Bro. Mickey makes deep, (and often humorous) connections between art, spirituality, and religious faith.” He also offers workshops on the creation of mandalas, a form of painting derived from personal and Christian symbolism. In addition to private commissions for parishes and schools, Bro. Mickey has created illustrations and written articles for many of today’s leading Catholic publishers, including America Magazine, Commonweal, and St. Anthony Messenger. His love for Catholic social teaching can be seen in the cover art and interior drawings he created for materials published by Just Faith Ministries and Hungry You Fed Me: Homilies for the Homeless. Mickey is a recipient of the THEA BOWMAN Black Catholic Education Foundation Award in recognition of his artwork on behalf of Sr. Thea Bowman, his great hero and inspiration. In 2010, his painting “CHRIST THE TEACHER” was presented to Benedict XVI. God knows where it is now. Bro. Mickey not only believes in the healing power that comes through beauty- whether creating it or appreciating it- but he also sees art as being of great service to social justice and religious faith formation for both children and adults.
