The new plan is the result of a two-year planning process involving numerous department staff, multiple partners and organizations, the Bear Brook State Park Steering Committee, and active engagement by the public via meetings and written comments. As the last plan was an overarching document with a management approach meant to be timeless, this new version used that plan as the foundation, and built upon the great work of our predecessors. Bear Brook State Park continues to be a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the southeast part of the state. Finding the right balance between recreational use and natural resource management and protection has not always been easy or obvious, but by following the goals of the Vision in Chapter 2, we will ensure that the property provides continued public access for outdoor recreation; contributes to the forest economy through the sale of wood products; and that the area’s wildlife, ecological values, and natural beauty remain intact. While this plan continues to utilize a management approach based on a system of disturbance- based criteria, using both even-aged and uneven-aged silviculture, as well as setting aside thousands of acres of relatively undisturbed landscape, it also contains several notable changes of contemporary interest. For instance, this version now has a new chapter dedicated solely to climate change and adds discussion regarding carbon markets. It better defines allowable timber harvest levels using both area control and volume regulation. It contains newly created maps using the latest in geographic information system technology. It provides a much more in-depth discussion of wildlife species and habitat requirements, as well as detailed descriptions of the natural communities occurring within the park. Finally, this plan provides a thorough analysis of the facilities and recreation occurring on the property, and identifies the needs and impacts of the various user groups. The department would like to thank each and every person who contributed in some way, whether large or small, to the creation of this new plan. The decisions we make today will have lasting impacts upon this wonderful resource far beyond the life of any plan, so a collaborative and cooperative planning process is imperative to ensure we make the best decisions on behalf of the land and the people of our state. It is our hope and belief that this plan accomplishes that lofty goal and that Bear Brook State Park will continue to be the southern flagship of the state reservation system. Table of Contents 1. REGION 1 – NORTHERN NH Connecticut Lakes Natural Area, Pittsburg - CLNA Manager Jill Kilborn completed a timber harvest on the South Bay Bog area last winter with help from other Region 1 staff and DNCR foresters. It will complement the very first timber sale on the CLNA which took place in 2009. During that sale there was a focus on aspen along the winter road that runs through the South Bay Bog area. That work resulted in some excellent aspen regeneration which was expanded upon in this latest entry. One-half to one-acre groups were harvested in the surrounding hardwood stands to promote new understory growth and better wildlife cover. In between the groups, thinning was done to promote mast production of beech and cherry.

The primary Jungian notion featured is that of self-actualization—the process by which a person has achieved a sense of wholeness uniting their body and mind to the greater world. Specifically, I examine how the protagonists and antagonists of these texts either complete their Jungian journey towards actualized wholeness. In order to do this, I focus greatly on Jung’s notion of archetypes, and how they either help or hinder the journey that these women are on. A large part of the analysis centers on how actualization might be defined in feminine terms, by women living in a world of patriarchal control. As such, this work continues the endeavors of other Post-Jungians to “rescue” Jung from his own patriarchal leanings, using his otherwise egalitarian theories as a way of critiquing patriarchy and envisioning sexual equality. Jung, then, becomes an interesting bridge between first, second, and third-wave feminism, as well as a bridge between modernism and post-modernism.

    INTRODUCTION Timber sales have been performed on State forest and park lands for 88 years since 1911 when the first thinning operation was completed on the Monadnock Reservation in Jaffrey. This first project coincided with the hiring of the first New Hampshire State Forester and the establishment of the State Forestry Department in 1910. During early times, timber cutting was irregularly scheduled and was primarily related to forest and park improvements as State land was acquired. Major accomplishments included the extensive thinnings, plantings, and other forest improvements performed by the Federal Civilian Conservation Corps from 1933 to 1941, and the salvage between 1939 and 1943 of huge volumes of timber damaged during the 1938 hurricane. Since 1950, however, timber sales have been regularly scheduled and have become fundamental to the management and maintenance of the timber, wildlife, and other forest resources on State-owned forest lands. Today, there are approximately a dozen or more timber sales initiated each year on State-owned lands. A typical timber sale involves an exhaustive 46 steps from start to finish, averages over 215,000 board feet, lasts six weeks (once operational), and requires more than 155 man-hours of staff time to complete. Significantly, the most demanding and time consuming portion of each timber sale is the environmental and site analysis, planning, project approval, and layout activities which generally involve almost 70 percent of the total time required for each timber sale. The key to successful timber sales on State-owned forest lands is the availability of State, Federal, and private resource management specialists to assistance with the extensive planning and review for each project.

    Appendix A: Reptiles Timber Rattlesnake Crotalus horridus Federal Listing N/A State Listing E Global Rank State Rank S1 Regional Status Very High Photo by Brendan Clifford Justification (Reason for Concern in NH) The Northeast Endangered Species and Wildlife Diversity Technical Committee determined that the timber rattlesnake is a species of regional concern in the northeastern United States (Therres 1999). This species warrants federal endangered or threatened species listing consideration, including prelisting status reviews (Therres 1999). In New England, timber rattlesnakes are listed as extirpated in Maine and Rhode Island, and endangered in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire. In New Hampshire, the timber rattlesnake is likely the most endangered of any wildlife species, as there is only one known extant population. Timber rattlesnakes have large home ranges, especially males, and individuals may be killed as they cross roads or as human‐snake encounters increase. Southern New Hampshire is rapidly developing, and large undeveloped tracts of land needed to sustain timber rattlesnake populations are dwindling rapidly. As a result, opportunities for natural recolonization or restoration have been substantially reduced. More recently, an emerging snake fungal disease has been implicated in population declines of timber rattlesnakes in multiple northeastern states including the NH population. Distribution Rattlesnakes have been historically reported from scattered locations throughout the southern half of the state, extending into the White Mountains. Clusters of reports came from along the Connecticut River in the southwest corner of the state, along the Merrimack River, the Lakes Region, and from the edge of the White Mountains. Historic locations for timber rattlesnakes included Rattlesnake Island in Lake Winnipesaukee (reportedly the site of heavy nineteenth century persecution for the manufacture of rattlesnake oil (Oliver and Bailey 1939)), and other locations near the lake; the Mt.
