Foi secretária de Educação do município do Rio de Janeiro, vice- presidente-executiva da Fundação Victor Civita e secretária de Estado da Cultura de São Paulo A universalização do acesso às escolas, bem como a formação de instituições democráticas no mundo, é um fenômeno relativa- mente novo no curso da história da humanidade e, até certo ponto, inconcluso. Até o início do século 19, a escola foi desenhada para atender a interesses de elites ou de classes médias em ascensão – muitas vezes associadas às instituições religiosas – e não para criar igualdade de oportunidades para todos ou desenvolvimento econômico e, menos ainda, coesão social. O papel da escola era, nesse contexto e em sua natureza, segregativo. No século 20, esse modelo de instituição educacional foi se modificando devido às transformações sociais e econômicas da época. Em virtude da noção recente de que a educação está relacio- nada com produtividade e desenvolvimento econômico, e de que é um direito humano básico, passou-se a diversificar e expandir os sistemas educacionais para garantir acesso à escola para todos. A educação e a escola passaram a ter, no imaginário social, um papel unificador entre povos, sendo consideradas alavancas para a solu- ção de problemas estruturais da sociedade. Durante esse processo, houve uma ênfase grande no desenvol- vimento de habilidades rotineiras, muitas vezes atreladas a com- petências cognitivas de escrita e leitura. Embora importante, essa perspectiva não atentava para a formação integral da criança e o de- senvolvimento de características como autonomia e criatividade. Ainda vemos hoje a educação e as escolas como uma matriz geradora de oportunidades capaz de mudar a realidade de vida de 7 empoderar crianças e jovens para a cidadania global crianças e jovens. Contudo, essa promessa é muitas vezes desa- fiada, dada a forma como as escolas e os processos educacionais são geridos. O modelo de escola do século 20 não atende mais às demandas sociais, econômicas e ambientais do século 21. Reconhecemos o fato de existir um novo movimento global que propõe mudanças intrínsecas no modelo industrial de ensino do século 20, baseado em conhecimentos enciclopédicos, compe- tências mecânicas e habilidades manuais e rotineiras, que ainda constituem a base de muitos processos pedagógicos e de gestão escolar no Brasil e no mundo. Para que a escola e a educação possam realmente concretizar esse papel unificador, devemos embarcar no movimento que clama por um modelo de escola comprometido com o aprendizado perso- nalizado de cada aluno e sua capacidade de pensar, ou seja, de de- senvolver raciocínio crítico, reflexivo e criativo; uma proposta que abarque, além da aquisição de habilidades cognitivas, um conheci- mento de mundo amplo e profundo, associado, também, ao desen- volvimento da autonomia e do protagonismo dos estudantes – ou seja, uma escola cujo papel seja, além de unificador, transformador. Para que esse papel transformador se concretize, é necessária uma abordagem interdisciplinar, voltada para o ensino de com- petências globais e para a formação integral da criança.     Empowering Global Citizens Empowering Global Citizens A World Course F M. R, V C, C K. C, J H, E. B. O’D Fernando M. Reimers is the Ford Foundation Professor of the Practice of International Education and the director of the Global Education Innovation Initiative and of the International Education Policy Program at Harvard University. Professor Reimers is an expert in the field of global education policy and in- novation. His research and teaching examine how education policy, leader- ship, instruction and innovation empower children and youth to develop the skills they need to thrive in the twenty-first century. He directs the Global Education Innovation Initiative, he and his colleagues recently finished a comparative study of the goals of education as reflected in the curricula in Chile, China, India, Mexico, Singapore, and the United States. These findings are presented in the book Teaching and Learning for the Twenty- first Century: Educational Goals, Policies, and Curricula from Six Nations published by the Harvard Education Press. This book is also available in Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish language editions. Another recent book, Fifteen Letters on Education in Singapore examines the lessons that can be learned from Singapore’s efforts to build a robust teaching profession, and is available in paperback and as an e-Book. He has authored, edited, or coed- ited fourteen books and ninety research articles and chapters on education.     Tough Pigs Yearbook 2014 The World’s Most Dangerous Yearbook compiled by Ryan Roe Greetings, Tough Friends! The year 2014 AD was an eventful one for Muppets and Muppet fans. We got a whole new movie (the one that didn’t have Jason Segel), with a marketing push that seemed even bigger than the one for that last movie (the Jason Segel one). Which meant we actually stayed on topic in a lot of threads! Quoted threads are arranged here in chronological order, accompanied by a notation as to who nominated each one. At the back of the yearbook you’ll find an index, which is guaranteed to not be very helpful at all. So that’s something to look forward to. Worth checking out: The “Muppet Fan Confessions” thread, in which many of us finally came clean about our unconventional opinions. There was too much of it to reproduce here in the yearbook, but you should definitely go read it here. You’ll be shocked to find out who dislikes which Muppet classic, and you’ll have a great time highlighting spoiler text.
