GUATEMALA. Dept. Peten, Cadenas Rd., km 142 west, in high forest, 3 Nov. 1966, Contreras6514 (MEXU). Dept. Peten, La Cumbre, top hill 3 km N of Pusila Village road, 20 March 1977, Lundell & Contreras20612 (MEXU). PHENOLOGY. Flowering November-May, the flowers with a slight delicate scent; fruiting May. HABITAT.Guatemala: high forest on rocky hill tops in 'zapotal' (associated with Manilkara trees); Costa Rica: seasonally flooded forest. The specific epithet alludes to the complex leaf structure, notably the presence of paraphyllidia (very conspicuous in Pennington& Poveda 11461) and filiform appendages at the end of the petiole and pinnae rachides which represent vestigial organs on a reduced bipinnate leaf. Other species of Zygia with similar leaves are Z. unifoliolata and Z. pithecolobioidesbut both have capitate inflorescences. Z. bifoliola from Boliva has the same type of leaves and long spicate inflorescences but the inflorescences are longer, up to 40 cm long, with the calyx up to 1 mm long and the corolla about 12 mm long.
