The aim of this study was to identify the major cockroach species in hospital environments in Ahvaz, capital of Khuzestan province, Iran. Totally, 7 hospitals and one private clinic of Ahvaz were investigated to collect the cockroaches using hand catch method. Totally, 76 cockroaches were collected from different parts of Ahvaz hospitals and one private clinic in the present study. They were identified as 4 species of cockroaches. From the data of this study it is concluded that the major collected cockroach species from Ahvaz hospitals are similar to the same studies of Iran. Nymphs closely resemble adults except nymphs are generally smaller and lack wings and genital openings or copulatory appendages at the tip of their abdomen. Many species, however, have wingless adult females. Nymphs of these may be recognized by their shorter, relatively broad cerci and lack of external genitalia. Male cockroaches possess styli in addition to paired cerci. Styli arise from the subgenital plate and are generally con- spicuous, but may also be reduced in some species. Styli are absent in adult females and nymphs.

In this study, part of mtDNA-COI gene of five common pest cockroaches was tested for diagnostic and phylogenetic pur- poses. Methods: We have described barcode region of mtDNA-COI gene of five cockroach species: Blattella germanica, Blatta orientalis, Periplaneta americana, Shelfordella lateralis, and Supella longipalpa, along with the development of a PCR-RFLP method for rapid detection and differentiation of these health pest species. Results: The PCR generates a single 710 bp-sized amplicon in all cockroach specimens, followed by direct se- quencing. AluI predicted from the sequencing data provided different RFLP profiles among five species. There was a significant intra-species variation within the American cockroach populations, but no genetic variation within other species. Accordingly, phylogenetic analysis demonstrates common monophyly for cockroach families in agreement with conventional taxonomy. However S. longipalpa (Ectobiidae) diverged as an early ancestor of other cockroaches and was not associated with other Ectobiidae.

They are known as a vector of many agents of disease like bacteria, viruses and fungi. The repeated usage of persistent and non-biodegradable insecticides has caused resistance in most of the cockroach populations. In this research, the resistance levels of five Blattella germanica L., 1767 (Blattodea: Ectobiidae) and five Periplaneta americana L., 1758 (Blattodea: Blattidae) cockroach populations against some synthetic pyrethroid insecticides (deltamethrin, permethrin, alpha-cypermethrin and lambda-cyhalothrin) were determined between 2014 and 2018 in Turkey. The resistance tests were performed by the standard glass jar surface method as recommended by World Health Organization. By exposing the test chemicals of the second and third instar nymphs of the cockroaches for 1 h, the median lethal dose 50% (LD50) values, resistance ratios (RR) and resistance status were specified. The P. americana populations were all susceptible to tested chemicals with resistance ratios between 1 and 2-fold. In B. germanica populations, the toxic effects of tested chemicals were found very low and resistance status was found moderate (RR 7.7-9.0-fold) or high (RR ≥18.5-fold).
