JETS 47/2 (June 2004) 253–75 INCORPORATED RIGHTEOUSNESS: A RESPONSE TO RECENT EVANGELICAL DISCUSSION CONCERNING THE IMPUTATION OF CHRIST’S RIGHTEOUSNESS IN JUSTIFICATION michael f. bird* i. introduction In the last ten years biblical and theological scholarship has witnessed an increasing amount of interest in the doctrine of justification. This resur- gence can be directly attributed to issues emerging from recent Protestant- Catholic dialogue on justification and the exegetical controversies prompted by the New Perspective on Paul. Central to discussion on either front is the topic of the imputation of Christ’s righteousness, specifically, whether or not it is true to the biblical data. As expected, this has given way to some heated discussion with salvos of criticism being launched by both sides of the de- bate. For some authors a denial of the imputation of Christ’s righteousness as the sole grounds of justification amounts to a virtual denial of the gospel itself and an attack on the Reformation. Others, by jettisoning belief in im- puted righteousness, perceive themselves as returning to the historical mean- ing of justification and emancipating the Church from its Lutheranism. In view of this it will be the aim of this essay, in dialogue with the main pro- tagonists, to seek a solution that corresponds with the biblical evidence and may hopefully go some way in bringing both sides of the debate together. ii. a short history of imputed righteousness since the reformation It is beneficial to preface contemporary disputes concerning justification by identifying their historical antecedents. Although the Protestant view of justification was not without some indebtedness to Augustine and medieval reactions against semi-Pelagianism, for the most part it represented a theo- logical novum. -

Strongly influenced by the epistle to the Romans, we perceive holiness as being in right relation to God and righteousness being a practical consequence of this relati- onship. Holiness as the inner nature of God brings fruits of His righteousness, which is God’s saving activity. However, in the light of Christ and his sacrifi- cial death and resurrection, relational, and eschatological perspectives of the dikaiosyne theou concept become crucial. This concept stands at the heart of Paul’s gospel and anticipates several layers of meaning, primarily God’s redeeming and saving activity, but also covenan- tal faithfulness and restorative justice brought by God and made available for all. Wider perspective is provided through the faithfulness of Jesus and his obedience to the Father in fulfilling salvific purposes. For us, it means a tran- sformational and relational way of living in an eschatological perspective. Christian ethics are deeply grounded in the concept of dikaiosyne theou, and Christian conduct represents its practical and necessary expression. People living in genuine Christian community are marked by the righteousness of God expressed as agape and progressively transformed by the presence and involvement of his Holy Spirit. -

Educating the community about these drives is important to growth of the Hindu community and of the future generations. The importance of these drives is presented in the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and in everyday values we teach our children. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna discusses the importance of the three yogas—karma yoga, bhakti yoga, and jnana yoga—and how they will help us attain moksha. Karma yoga, best described, is the idea of “inaction in action and action in action.” Karma yoga requests us to take action without any attachment to results. Bhakti yoga is a path of worship which comprises of remembering God at all times, regardless of what action is being performed. Jnana yoga is the path to wisdom that comprises of accepting the idea that the Brahman is the ultimate reality. These yogas are the fundamental pillars on which Hinduism rests as they provide a firm foundation to base our lives upon. They teach us to do well to others without ulterior motives, remember the Lord that gave us the opportunity to prove ourselves in this world, and remember that one should not live life with materialistic intentions. A blood drive or bone marrow drive takes into account each of these yogas, and teaches the community the pillars or Hinduism while enforcing the values that elders have been preaching. -

Seifrid Inter Varsity Press, New Studies in Biblical Theology, 2000 $ 19.99, 222 pages (paper) ________________________________________ Readers of Modern Reformation certainly will be interested in any book which sets forth Paul’s doctrine of justification and its relationship to the law of God. This is especially true when such a study is conducted in light of the challenges raised to traditional Protestant formulations of this critical doctrine by proponents of the so-called “New Perspective on Paul” (NPP) such as E. P. Sanders and James D. G. Dunn. Christ our Righteousness by Mark Seifrid is such a book. Associate professor of New Testament at the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Dr. Seifrid is among a group of evangelical scholars widely hailed for their substantial contributions to Pauline studies. Other names which come to mind in this regard are: Douglas Moo, Frank Thielman and Thomas Schreiner. Seifrid has already written a substantial volume on Paul, Justification by faith: The Origin and Development of a Central Pauline Theme (E. J. Brill, 1992), and an important essay on the subject of Romans 7:14-25 in Novum Testamentum (Vol. 34, 1992). He is the author of an insightful review of The Gift of Salvation which originally appeared in First Things (1997) as the fruit on the ongoing evangelical-Roman Catholic discussion about the nature of the gospel (Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society Vol. 42). When someone with Seifrid’s pedigree weighs in on Paul, justification and the law, it is important to take notice. -

Ball It would be stating the obvious to say that this brief study of Paul’s use of the word ‘righteousness’ as it relates to redemption is not intended to be exhaustive. That would require an in-depth study and a full-length book, akin, for example, to Leon Morris’s New Testament study The Apostolic Preaching of the Cross which, since its first publication in 1955, has not been surpassed, perhaps not even equalled. The first word which Morris examined was one of the words in the title above, ‘redemption’, an investi- gation which took up more than 50 pages in the book – more than four times the length of this entire chapter.2 That should not deter us, however, for it will still be possible to establish the substance of what Paul means by these words, to see how they relate to each other and to other crucial words which Paul uses in conjunction with them. -

Kalita HOD &Associate Professor in Philosophy MNC BalikaMahavidyalaya, Nalbari, Assam, India ABSTRACT The paper proposes to present and and critically evaluate the main concept of G.ita Rahasya about bhakti-yoga for salvation. Bhakti-yoga is the combination of Bhakti and yoga which generally means devotees’ prayer to God. It believes in God as our ultimate Lord. It is simply ‘love for God’. But Gita Rahasya against it significantly states that Bhakti-yoga is not an independent path or means to attain salvation. Keywords: Gita Rahasya, salvation or ultimate truth or Brahman and karma-yoga. INTRODUCTION Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s (1856-1920) wrote the Gita Rahasya as the interpretation of the Gita in the Mandalay Jail in March, 1911. He was a mainly freedom fighter, philosopher, social reformer and humanitarian. Gita Rahasya establishes philosophy into practical religion. METHODOLOGY: It has been mainly used by rational and analytical methods. It is mainly helped by, news paper, book, journal, research paper, internet (web resources) and discussion of the issue. OBJECTIVE The main objectives are to be stated as following: (1) To study the main concept Tilak’s Gita Rahasya relating bhakti-yoga. (2) To study the concept of bhakti-yoga for attaining salvation. (3) To study the relations among jnana, bhakti and karma. Result and Discussion: Gita Rahasya and Bhaki-Yoga According to the Gita Bhakti-yoga is important one of the eighteen Yogas. -
Concept of Salvation in Hinduism
HINDUISM AND CONCEPT OF SALVATION {With special reference to The Bhagavad Gita} Tahira Basharat∗ The concept of salvation is present in almost all religions in its own distinct way. The primary purpose of all religions is to provide salvation to their followers and the existence of many different religions indicates that there is a great variety of opinion about what constitutes salvation and the means of achieving it. The term salvation can be meaningfully used in connection with so many religions, however, shows that it distinguishes a notion common to men and women of a wide range of cultural traditions. The monotheistic religions state that barrier between human and God is a sin. The monotheistic religions define salvation as entering a state of eternal communion with God, which means that personhood will not be abolished but perfected. However, they differ greatly on the way one can be saved and on the role Jesus Christ has in it. According to Judaism and Islam, salvation is attained by performing good deeds and following the moral law. According to Christianity this is not enough and the role of Jesus Christ as Savior is essential. Other Eastern religions, such as Buddhism and Taoism, take salvation as an illumination, meaning the discovery of and conformity of oneself with an eternal law that governs existence. Dualistic religions, which state that two opposed forces of good and evil rule our world, see salvation as a return to an initial angelic state, from which humans have fallen into a physical body. Salvation, for the Hindu, can be achieved in one of three ways: the way of works, the way of knowledge, or the way of devotion. -

Vedic Sciences Sam Geppi 1 Synthesizing Vedic Principles To tackle and synthesize the multitude of Vedic texts across many disciplines in one class is rather daunting. But I'm going to try to show a brief history of the Vedic culture and how it evolved into many different branches of what we now call the Vedic Sciences. Essentially the earliest Vedic writings were more Scriptural-based and come from and incredibly early time when things were not written down for the sake of scholarship, but more for the sake of remembrance. Meaning, the earliest Vedic people did just fine relating information orally. During the Satya Yuga it was not necessary to write things down. Our mind was vibrating at a higher frequency. However, these wise people knew that we would be slipping into a darker era and so that future generations would not forget how to perform these important rituals, they began to write them down. The oldest Vedic scriptures are mainly rituals – ways to awaken the God force here on earth. It is difficult to approach these texts with the modern mind because nothing is persuasive or explanatory. In general, these are manuals – textbooks from ancient magicians who understood the deepest mysteries of life and how the subtle energies of the universe are creating beings and experiences. Within this larger context more formal sciences evolved later on as it became necessary to actually provide methods and background and specific techniques for different areas of life. The earliest of the Vedic sciences had more to do with Vaastu (sacred architecture and direction) and astrology (reading the heavens and doing things at auspicious times).
