Upper Hutt v Petone Panthers game review Image by T’vita Mafi: Upper Hutt Tigers coach, Tyrone Paikea and his two sons. The Upper Hutt Tigers also gained an addition to its trophy cabinet this season by beating the Petone Panthers 48-20 at Upper Hutt and in doing so claimed the Hughie Paul Memorial Shield. In what was the battle of the wooden spoon between the two bottom placed sides, Upper Hutt began the game determined to prove that Tigers have the bigger bite and at halftime that proved to be the case as they went into the break with a big 36-6 lead. Upper Hutt centre Denzel Guth relished some open gaps out wide by scoring four tries for the home side and was complimented well by his second row Aaron Taylor, who went over the line twice. The second half saw Petone bounce back with some good tries, but fell well short in the end as time became their enemy. - Carey Clements Visit us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wellington-Rugby-League/149807975039915 NZRL Camp-Rotorua Ten of our boys travelled to Tui Ridge, Rotorua for the Kiwis 16’s & 18’s High Performance Camp and competed against the best of the players in the country to vie for a black jersey. The boys were put through some tough testing and were given great coaching sessions and workshops from some of the game’s best including former Manly, Blues and Kangaroos legend and current Bulldogs head coach Des Hasler. Also there to give the boys some tips was Kiwis only World Cup winning captain and Parramatta Eels star Nathan Cayless, and other former NRL and Kiwis players like Andy Patmore (Bulldogs) , Duane Mann, Daryl Halligan, Tony Iro, Nigel Vagana, Jerry Seuseu and recently retired Warriors star Jerome Ropati. Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them.

Sir Peter Leitch Club Newsletter RLWC 2017 18th October 2017 It’s 10 days until the Kiwis play their first game of the 2017 RLWC #192 David’s Guide To The World Cup By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan ’M GETTING excited as we inch closer to the 2017 Rugby League World Cup. ILike everyone, I can’t see anyone but Australia winning, although I have not given up on my Kiwis. Getting your head around the format is a bit of a head-scratcher, but being a self-appointed league genius, I have decided to simplify things for you. Three teams from Pool A and B go to the quarter-finals, but only the winners of Pool C and D do – giving you the eight teams you need, and eliminating six others. Pool A: Australia, England, France, Lebanon: The Kangaroos have seven players from Melbourne’s premier- ship-winning team, give or take, half the side. They start against England on October 27, and the only question is how they cope without Johnathan Thurs- ton, although they have Cameron Munster, James Maloney and Michael Morgan, so some pretty tasty players all round. They also have coach Mal Meninga. England will be looking for their first ever World Cup. They have reached the semis every time, but have nev- er gone all the way, so they will be desperate to make this year theirs. They have another super-coach in Wayne Bennett, but he has thrown up some strange selections, and the British press have certainly fallen out of love with him.

This week it was even worse. Having vowed to remain positive, I thought, at least the effort was there against the Cowboys, surely against the Sharks that is something we can build on. Well, we could not build Lego. Soft. That’s four straight losses, and it’s the same old story. No finals footy for us. Nothing new in that, we have not been there for the last five years, and 2017 just give the haters yet another stick to beat us with. But I vowed to remain optimistic to the end, and we have five games to go. Surely even we can not go nine in a row without winning.

29 AUGUST 2014 #39 The best crowd - 19,676 - weather and conditions of the year, but the worst performance. Let’s face it, we were just awful on our way to a morale-sapping 46-12 fl ogging at the hands of the Roosters at Mt Smart. We have not looked great for a little while now. We limped past Cronulla, got upset by Newcastle and then utterly bashed by a rampant Roosters side that scored at will. It all means we have to win our fi nal two games of the season, and have other results go our way, to make the top eight. Sounds familiar doesn’t it. The Roosters ran rings around us. Warriors coach Andrew McFadden said the performance was probably the most disappointing of the season. It’s hard to know what to add. We can all accept being beaten, and no one really expects to win every game, but it was the manner of the loss that was of real concern. But out of every negative a positive. Even soundly beaten we had a good time in the lounge, including welcoming MANU VATUVEI AFTER THE GAME a former player in Hitro Okosene (see photos further along in the Newsletter). It took me back to a time when he would charge up the fi eld, his long hair fl ying, giving his all for the side. So I will be back at Mt Smart on Sunday when we really have to turn it on and beat the Titans. It is not over yet, and keeping the faith is important to me.

In a lifetime of following and writing about the game I would have encountered only a handful of officials as colourful as Gerald. He was not only a totally honest and sincere man but also a journalist’s dream. The first NZRL chairman I met was Ron McGregor, who told me on the eve of the 1971 Kiwis tour to Brit- ain and France that all rugby league folk were bonded by having made a choice to become involved. Rugby league was not thrust upon us, as the union code was in high schools, and often sacrifices needed to be made to play our game. Since Ron there have been all manner of men chairing the national administration. They have certainly not been the bland, faceless stereotypes who have ruled some of this country’s biggest sports. Frankly, I knew little about Gerald Ryan when he was elected to the post in 1997 but I soon discovered his four-year term was never going to be boring. Continued on next page...
