DESERTCHORALE 7 8 DESERTCHORALE A WORD FROM JOSHUA HABERMANN Group singing is a tradition that is common to all human cultures. In its simplest form it is accessible to anyone, requiring no materials or equipment other than the human voice. In their most recent national survey, the music advocacy group Chorus America reported that there are over 42 million Americans currently participating in choral singing in approximately 270,000 choruses throughout the country. This makes choral singing by far the most popular form of performing arts participation. These numbers are still more impressive when we consider that we live in an age in which the passive enjoyment of entertainment in the home has eclipsed the active creation and appreciation of art in the community. So what is it about this art form that has so many of us hooked? If asked to express what motivates them, most choral singers would come back to a few basic themes: • Choruses expose us to beauty, pure and simple. The sound of voices raised in song together can speak directly to our emotional core. • Choral music brings us into contact with the greatest poets and composers of human history. Whether from a familiar or foreign culture, beautiful words are ennobled by great music, and beautiful music is ennobled by great words. When the two come together they can imprint on our souls in a deeply moving way. • Choral music fills one of our most basic human needs: belonging to a community. We seem to be programmed with a longing to be part of something bigger than ourselves, and choral music is the ultimate team sport. It is this last point that has been foremost in my mind over the last months since we returned from the Desert Chorale tour and performances for the national conference of the American Choral Directors Association in Salt Lake City. Despite being among the most gifted singers in the field, our Desert Chorale artists are willing to enter joyfully into an ensemble culture in which each voice has its part to play in creating the whole. This sense of community is palpable in our rehearsals and performances, and together with technical mastery it defines and distinguishes the Desert Chorale experience.
