2. Kovnotyansow / Minutes The minutes of the meeting on Friday 19th January 2015 were read and agreed.

3. Materow ow sordya / Matters arising 4. Arwodhow yn stret / Street signs

The agreed translation for Harcourt Close (Truro) should have been spelled Hirgrack, not Hirgrak.

4. Arwodhow yn stret / Street signs There were no outstanding street signs to discuss at the meeting.

5. Henwyn leow / Place names a) Rol 1:250,000 (56 henwyn tyller gesys) The Brisons () = Enys Tonndardh The Bridges [Reef] Gap = An Ajwa It was believed that was too generic for this place name. Noted that the LC form was closer to the current map form, therefore was selected. Chapel Point (Goran) = Penn Chapel The panel was happy that the nearby Colona Beach was not linked to . It was suggested that the

chapel may have been further inland, with the name being transferred. Goelhofna (Goran) [historic name on Chapel Point] = Golowva St Clement’s Isle (Paul) = Enys Klemens Suggested that may have been transferred from the main island. Carn Lodgia = Karn Lojow Carn Luz = Karn Loos Carn Gwase = Karn Gwas St Columb Minor (St Columb Minor) = S. Kolom Vyghan The discussion on the correct usage between wartha/woles and meur/byghan for suffixes was revisited. There was uncertainty whether St Columb Minor and were, apart from the dedication, linked at one point, when considering the distance apart. There were concerns whether the suffixes mentioned earlier could be mixed as there was already an established translation for St Columb Major as S. Kolom Veur. was selected and is backed up by the presence of ‘minor’ in six historical forms before 1449. The 1473 form St Columb the less supports the idea raised at the meeting that this place-name was named after status, not location. Crane Islands (Illogan) = Meyn Karvran The historical forms only show one island, whereas the current map form features the plural. This name might have been transferred from Crane, , which is 2½ miles inland from Crane Islands. There was consensus that this formation was too small to be considered an island, therefore meyn was selected as the plural of rock to reflect the current form. Cribba Head (St Levan) = Penn Kribow Believed to be named after the shape of the headland, not the reef. The name would need to reflect the geography. Fistral Bay (St Columb Minor) = Baya Fystal It was suspected that Blistra/Fistral may have been the same word originally, only mutated. The 1562 form Towenvlister supported this idea, but there was no further evidence to support it. There were no historical forms available for Fistral prior to 1813; therefore this was respelled into SWF.

2 Fraddon (St Enoder) = Frosan Almost all of the historical forms show an <-an> suffix; this is believed to mean ‘place of’. Fros, meaning ‘stream, current’ was used in preference of frod as it is a revived form being used in a modern context. Higher Fraddon = Frosan Wartha Georgia (Towednack) = Gorga From gor (low/ruinous) + ke (hedge); utilising the loss of stress from e>a, which can be seen in the PN Hendra. This helps to avoid the English word ‘gorge’. Gwenter () = Gwynstir Queried why was prevalent in all of the historical forms; the final <-ter> was believed to be tir (land). There was a discussion whether the first element was gwynn (white) or gwyns (wind); the latter was decided to be more likely. Hot Point (Landwednack) = DEFERRED There was uncertainty whether referred to ‘boiling/turbulent’ or ‘hat’. The agreement was deferred to determine whether it’s a high point. Kelsey (Cubert) = Kellji Kelsey Head (Cubert) = Penn Kellji Agreement that this was not a stream name. Suggested kel (cell) + ji (house) would be more likely than kylghji. Kynance Cove (Landwednack) = Ben Kewnans The compound kewnans (ravine) was preferred in place of keynans (rugged ravine). Kynance (former settlement) = Kewnans Kynance Valley = Kewnans Kynance Cliff = Als Kewnans Vale of Lanherne (St Mawgan-in-Pydar) = Nans Lannhernow This PN was also known as Vale of Mawgan (1906). Vale was suggested to be a Victorian affectation. The element is obscure. Ligger or Perran Bay (Perranzabuloe) = Baya Leghow Ligger Point = Penn Leghow Believed to be Cornish cleger (cliff/crag). Cligga Head = Penn Kleger Longships (Sennen) = Gorholyon Longships Lighthouse = Golowji Gorholyon Suggestion for corpus that gorhol would be appropriate

3 for a fast sailing boat. Kettles Bottom (Sennen) = DEFERRED Sharks Fin (Sennen) = DEFERRED N Meek to email the panel after the meeting to discuss both Kettles Bottom and Sharks Fin (Sennen). Malpas (St Clement) = Tremenslynk Queried whether the PN equivalent in Cheshire referred to a river crossing; one etymology provided bad + passage/way. The possibility of whether stepping stones could have been used at this location was discussed. Tremenslynk was agreed.
