TONIGHT’S GAME The Flyers conclude their season-opening road trip tonight with a visit to the Nashville Predators for their fourth game of the season. The Flyers are 2-1 on the season after a 3-2 overtime win over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night, which concluded a set of three games in four nights to start the season. This is the first time since 1971 that the Flyers have started a season with a four-game road trip; that season, they were 2-2 over a four-game trip that started in Pittsburgh and continued with visits to Vancouver, the California Golden Seals, and then Los Angeles. They have had a handful of three-game trips to start a season, most recently last year. The 2011- 12 season was the last time the Flyers picked up wins in three of their first four home games. The team returns to Philadelphia after tonight’s game to prepare for its home opener Saturday night vs. Washington, which kicks off a five-game homestand.

The Flyers took the lead for the first time just over eight minutes into the contest when Ivan Provorov scored moments after a Flyers power play ended. Anaheim evened the count just under four minutes later on a goal by Antoine Vermette. Philadelphia regained the lead on a Sean Couturier second period goal, but Anaheim knotted it again on a Cam Fowler shorthanded goal just a few minutes into the third frame. Simmonds bagged the game-winner off an assist from Couturier. Brian Elliott stopped 21 of 23 for his second win of the year, while John Gibson absorbed the loss with 34 saves. Stars of the Game: 1 – Wayne Simmonds; 2 – John Gibson; 3 – Ivan Provorov.

NOTABLES

The Flyers beat Anaheim for the first time since December of 2011, snapping an eight-game winless streak against the club (0-5-3).

Nolan Patrick recorded his first NHL point with an assist on Ivan Provorov’s first-period goal. Patrick also had three shots on goal and was 6-for-8 on faceoffs in 13:49 of ice time.

Claude Giroux recorded an assist on Sean Couturier’s second-period goal. It was the 396th assist of Giroux’s career, which moves him into sole possession of fourth place on the Flyers All Time List in the assists category. Giroux started the season tied with Mark Recchi; he now trails only Bobby Clarke, Brian Propp, and Bill Barber. He sits 67 assists away from Barber’s 463.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers have had 49 third-period shots so far this season – 17 in each of the first two games and 15 in Saturday’s game at Anaheim. They have had a total of 54 shots in the other six periods.

Wayne Simmonds was named the NHL’s Third Star for the first week of the season, ending October 7. Simmonds had four goals over the first three games, including a hat trick in the opener and the game-winning goal in both wins, and is among three players tied for second in the league in goals scored. Among the hat trick goals in San Jose was his 400th career point. Simmonds became the first player in franchise history to record a hat trick in the first game of the season.

Jake Voracek has four assists over the first three games, and is one of a handful of players tied for third in the league in the category.

Sean Couturier has a goal and two assists and is plus-5 in his first three games as the center on a line with Claude Giroux and Jake Voracek. Couturier had a two-point game vs. Anaheim (1G, 1A) and was plus-3. He is one of 17 players in the NHL to be plus-5 or better entering Monday’s games.

Shayne Gostisbehere tied a career high on Wednesday night with three assists. He also did it on Feb. 19, 2017 at Vancouver. Gostisbehere had 32 assists last season, which was third on the team and led all Flyers defensemen.

Claude Giroux enters his sixth season as the captain of the Flyers. He is the first Flyer to start a sixth season as captain since Eric Lindros, who was the captain from 1994-95 to 1999-2000, and has played more games as captain than anyone in team history other than Bobby Clarke. Giroux appeared in all 82 games last season, doing so for the fourth time in his career. He has missed just 10 regular season games since the start of the 2009-10 season, appearing in 612 out of a possible 622 games. Since the start of the 2010- 11 season, Giroux ranks fourth in scoring in the NHL behind only Alex Ovechkin, Patrick Kane and Sidney Crosby.

Nolan Patrick played 13:30 in his NHL debut on Wednesday and recorded his first NHL assist on Saturday. Patrick, the club’s highest draft pick since in 2007, is the first Flyer to make the team in his draft year since Sean Couturier did it in 2011. ( Scott Laughton appeared in five games for the Flyers during his draft year but was returned to junior afterwards.) He became the youngest Flyer to appear in a game since Laughton made his debut at age 18 years, 234 days on Jan. 20, 2013 vs. Pittsburgh. Couturier made his debut on Oct. 6, 2011 at the age of 18 years, 303 days. Other Flyers to make the team during their draft year since 1990 include Mike Ricci (1990), Yanick Dupre (1991), Dainius Zubrus (1996), Justin Williams (2000), and Luca Sbisa (2008).

Jordan Weal was back on an opening-night roster this year for the second time in his career. He made the LA Kings opening roster in 2015-16, but only played in 10 games through the end of December before coming to the Flyers in a January 2016 trade. After starting last year with AHL Lehigh Valley, Weal was named an AHL All-Star and was the league’s Player of the Month for January. He was called up shortly afterwards and spent the rest of the year with the Flyers, scoring eight goals in the final 23 games.

Taylor Leier was also an AHL All-Star last year, and is on an NHL opening-night roster for the first time in his career. Leier has appeared in 16 games for the Flyers over the past two seasons. He was limited by injury to 48 games last year with AHL Lehigh Valley, but still registered 13 goals and 24 assists for 37 points in that time.

Scott Laughton has returned to the Flyers’ lineup after spending most of the 2016-17 season in Lehigh Valley. The team’s first-round pick in 2012, Laughton played the entire 2015-16 season with the Flyers but only had two NHL appearances last year, instead playing 60 games for the Phantoms. He scored 19 goals and added 20 assists for 39 points on the season.
