Hey guys, Question ...... Do either of you know if athletics offers any type of Affilate Faculty positions for those that may be affiliated with the UW primarily with UW athletics? They aren't coaches, but more along the line of chaplains.

Hey Coach Peterson, I hope you are enjoying your time at your lake house in Boise. I'm at OSU participating in our regional FCA camp. We had 17 kids give their lives to Christ and 30 more rededications. Anyway I won't take up too much of your time. I wanted to ask you 3 questions.

1 39

1. What are your expectations for me in my role? I don't know your protocol as it pertains to chaplaincy. Coach McHugh couldn't really give me a good description and I know that you will be out of town until the 26th so I decided to email you. 2. Would you be available on Oct. 22 to speak on a panel for my fall banquet? It would be 15-20 mins of your time during lunch (12:00 - 1 :00) at the Conibear or the Don James Center. If you can't do it then I would like love for you do a video ask. 3. Lastly, would you pray about coming on my support team. I raise all my funding and you are the 2nd Christian Coach (other being Chan Gailey) that I have worked for. If you could great but if not great as well. I always ask coaches that are believers.

Let me know if there is anything that I need to do in the meantime. I look forward to serving you and the team.

Blessing Coach,

Fellowship of Christian Athletes Business Proposal FCA Representative: Jonathan Rainey

March 2013 44

Section I. Statement of the Business Concept (Executive Summary):

The University of Washington is in need of a Fellowship of Christian Athletes representative; this would be the first time that a program like this would be established for athletics at the university. For the program to be managed successfully, it would require one person associated with FCA to be placed in charge to conduct mentorship, community outreach and establish spiritual opportunities to student-athletes at the University of Washington.

To establish such a program, it will require using donors who have an interest in the overall development of the student-athletes. These are donors who want to see well-rounded

students succeed both on and off the field at the University of Washington. These donors will also need to understand that their donation will be given directly to the Fellowship of Christian

Athletes organization. Once that takes place, the organization in return will cover the cost of employing the representative at the University of Washington to work with the current student athletes and coaches. Donors will still be given full-credit for their donations and the benefits that they would typically receive, had the money gone directly to the university.

This program will have a four-year growth strategy. The first year will be sampling and utilizing the volunteer services of a Fellowship of Christian Athletes representative. The next

stage of the plan is paying for a full mentorship program in which the student-athletes as well as the coaches will have access to. It will cost $85,000 to implement this stage. The final stages will be implementing specific programming; this will bring a grand total of the program to a cost of $126,468 by 2015.

Here's one scenario: it's the night before the first game of the season, and Coach Sark has just finished the final team meeting of the night before the game. Imagine being a freshman who is 2000 miles away from home. Your whole support network has changed; you no longer have

2 45

your family close by, you have a new coaching staff, and you also have a change in city culture and a change in friends. This student-athlete is about to go play a game in Seattle, Washington, in front of 70,000 plus fans. How nice would it be for that player to have someone who is familiar with the team but is not directly involved with the game of football. This student-athlete can confide in this person because they know that this person is committed to the well-being of the individual. This isn't someone who they're talking to on the phone, but it's someone who will actually be with them through their experience and someone who can be a mentor and character-coach for their development as they begin this wonderful, yet demanding journey in college athletics.

By establishing such a program, the University of Washington will be making strides for their athletic programs. Ultimately, the development of student-athletes will reach an all-time height by bringing in the organization of Fellowship of Christian Athletes to manage a tailored program to the university.

Section II. External Environment:

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as of2012 had 450,000 athletes.

This number includes both men and women mostly ranging in age from 18 to 22 (Brown, 2012, p. 1). This means that when donors and coaches are thrown into the equation, the number involved dramatically increases. The NCAA is broken up by three main divisions and those divisions are listed as Division I, II, and III. Each division contains sports for both men and women.

Division I Women's has 3,514 teams consisting of 79,789 athletes. Division II Women's has 2,466 teams and 44,249 athletes. Division III Women's has 4,019 teams consisting of

3 46

74,065 athletes. This makes a total of 9,999 teams and 198,103 athletes in all three Women's

Divisions (Irick, 2012, p. 71). Division I Men's has 2,960 teams with 93,082 athletes. Division

II Men's has 2,150 teams with 63,692 athletes. Division III has 3,674 teams with 104,376 athletes. This makes a total of 8, 784 teams with 261, 150 athletes (p. 72). This makes a grand total of 18,783 teams and 459,253 athletes among both men and women in all three divisions.

Those athletes are the market and focus of this industry. Looking more specifically at Division I, membership is made up of 346 schools and 31 conferences. This market represents a diverse population (NCAA, n.d., p. l ).

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is a certified 501 C3 non-profit organization.

The program was established in 1954, the concept is helping athletes achieve a level of faith, while competing on the athletic field (FCA, 2013, pl). FCA has developed a statement of faith that outlines their entire belief system with regards to the Christian Faith. Included in this

statement is the importance of following the bible and spiritual unity (FCA, n.d., Section About).

The keys to victory for this organization include the number of certified campus ministries, overall camp numbers, number of coaches' bible study under FCA, numbers of bibles distributed and number of donations (FCA, n.d. p.1 ). It is important to note these are the keys for the overall organization on a national level. This plays a role in the Seattle market as FCA is established in the Northwest region. They put on multiple camps geared towards athletes as well as parents.

FCA Northwest is attempting to engage in the four areas of coaches, campus, camps and community ministry (nwestwafca.org, n.d., Sction About).

Schools and student-athletes are the ones that make up the market. However, they are not the ones paying for the service. The ones supporting such a service are the donors and alumni of the specific schools and these donors and alumni are the ones that will ultimately provide the

4 47

funds that support the additional programs. Student-athletes are looking for a community when it comes to leaving their home environment and entering college. This comes in the form of many things. Having programs geared to building communities within boundaries, plays an enormous part of college student's livelihood. They also want a person that is not associated with their sport directly that they can confide in and communicate with on a one-on-one basis.

Finally, some student-athletes are looking for spiritual outreach. Having a person associated with the church provides this opportunity.

Along the same lines as the student athletes, coaches want to have a person that can help reach the student-athletes on a more personal level. This gives the coaches room to coach and teach, while knowing that they have provided a service that they can lean on. This leads to the

second key to success for the coaches: they want to care for the wellbeing of their student athletes. By bringing in an outside presence, they provide a safe place for student-athletes to go that is outside the staff. This adds a level of trust between the coaches and the student-athletes.

In looking at donors, it is important to understand that donors want different things and give for different reasons. An article at Indiana University stats that majority of donors give on basic needs followed by making the community better and making the world better

(Pilanthropy .iupui.edu, 2009, p.17). Now, this does not necessarily equate to athletic donors, however we can clearly see that donors have different motivations. For this project we are looking for donors and alumni that want to support organizations that benefit the student athletes. They want to see ways that student-athletes benefit the community. They also want to know that the well-being of the student-athletes is cared for in a way that best promotes well rounded people. Finally, they want to see their school succeed both academically and athletically.

5 48

Price does not play much of a role in this venture because donors are usually willing to pay what is necessary to get the job done. Where it does have an influence is to the question of why a donor would give resources to one program over another program. There are a number of competitors when looking at programs designed for student-athletes. Typically, the schools have mentorship programs and life-skill programs. Schools also tend to have psychologists on hand that students can access on a need to need basis. Campuses have religious centers where

students can attend regardless of faith or denomination. There are multiple outside organizations that exist. For example, Athletes in Action is a program that exists to provide community, mentorship and spirituality to student-athletes. Other programs may offer specified services like the Jed Foundation. It is important that as we are looking at this specific market there are two main firms that offer the complete service.

Relationships with other institutions, colleges and universities are both private and public. The public institutions receive public funding. Also, some private universities receive public funds. This brings a difficult matter with regard to government law in relation to

separation of church and state. This law is something that organizations who engage in this type of work are aware of and strictly follows the right protocol. As a result of receiving federal funds, this makes the institutions subject to state and federal laws.

Nature of competitive practices within the industry include but are not limited to providing necessary resources, access to programs, and promotion of the organization within the industry. The programs will state they offer advantages and have success rates with regard to

student-athletes. There is also a nature of cooperative practices schools are likely to work together to help one another with regards to programming. Since this is non-profit, there is a

6 49

larger picture at stake that ultimately means helping student-athletes. For example, teams may help teams at other schools find the right representatives if they need permits.

Section III. Products I Services Offered:

By having a representative from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) campus, the

student-athletes will be cared for by building community relations, mentorship and spirituality for those student-athletes that would like to engage in such programs. The representative from

FCA is a former student-athlete and has been serving within the FCA for over a decade. This person would be looking to develop two main programs.

Maximize is a program within the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) organization.

The program consists of three phases serving installation of teaching leadership skills, mentorship and counseling. There is also a spiritual component of the program that consists of chapel services and bible studies for those that would want to attend (Rainey, (n.d. ), p. l ).

Championship Leadership is My Behavior (CLIMB) is a program that would be taught in order to teach leadership. This helps student-athletes reach their potential athletically, socially and academically (p. l ). Both programs in the process will have copyrights. It is important to note that the representatives will also be working on community by establishing community service activities, both domestic as well as abroad. In addition, spiritual outreach will also be an option for the student-athletes; this includes bible studies, chapel, mass and helping student-athletes find a place to practice their own faith regardless of religion or denomination.

The main focus in terms of identifying customers for this particular project is the donors and alumni because they have the money to invest. Donors and alumni who invest in such a program will be able to get information regarding the program as well as witness it first hand by participating in various events. Every sixth months a report will be distributed amongst the

7 50

investors that will quantify how many students were mentored, what their issues were (i.e. depression, suicidal, relationship and how this was affecting them as a student-athlete). The records will show where the student-athlete is after receiving assistance. This report will just contain the issues not the student-athletes names. The purpose is to show the work that is being done by the FCA representative. The report will also include how many community service activities were held and the location of those events. Finally, there will be a section with regard to the number of bible studies, chapels, and other faith base services that were coordinated or assisted with for the student-athletes. This will help show the investors that their money is being put to good use, by actual quantifiable data. These reports will be distributed over a lunch with with the representative of FCA to engage in a question-and-answer period.

To make the project translucent for investors, all the investors will be invited to partake in a chapel session and a team meeting the night before team competition. Investors will also benefit by giving to this because as the donation will be tax deductible because FCA is 501 C3.

Donors as well as the university need to understand that while the initial donation goes to FCA and not the university, FCA essentially gives that money back to the university by supplying the representative and materials for the university to use. Therefore, donors should receive their

soft-credit for the donation.

Investors have the opportunity to assist athletic programs in more material ways. This could include purchasing physical capital like new facilities and equipment as opposed to investing in the FCA program, which is human capital. The nice thing about physical capital is it is easier to see the return on the investment. However, by investing in human capital like the

FCA program, there is a chance for investors to give back to their athletic programs in a way that benefits the mental, emotional and social development of the student-athlete. This in tum will

8 51

develop wins in the community as well as on the field. Ultimately, donors and alumni want their athletic programs to produce wins and if they invest in the psychological development of their athletes that goal can be achieved. Especially, in the case where

Section IV. Growth Strategy:

The approach to entry to the market is utilizing the mentorship program on a voluntary basis. The second year is really establishing a great mentorship program and this will cost

$85,000 for the first year. By establishing the mentorship side of the program, the customers can

see the benefits of the program through a report that will be given every sixth months as stated above.

The third year the Maximize and by the fourth year CLIMB programs will be installed into the service. This will increase the overall cost of the program to $126,468 by the fourth year. The individual cost for each program is $20,734.

The chart below shows the growth over the market during the next four years with regards to how the program is going to be incorporated. Being that this is a non-profit business there will not be revenue growth. However, based on the ability to establish funds, the program in the next four years will be able to be implemented fully. In the chart, you will see the five year plan. Each bar is representative of a program being added. By 2015 all the elements of the overall program will be established. Year one volunteer, year two Mentorship, year three

Maximize, and by year four, CLIMB.

9 52

This product is timeless, and new programs in the organization are continuing to be developed and old programs are tweaked in order to be relevant. However, the central theme of the program does not change. This will allow the price of the investment to be sustained at

$126,468 from 2015 on.

Location of the industry, in this case FCA is a national organization, the materials can be distributed to local markets and the service can be provided in those markets as well. It is imperative that the representative of FCA for a particular athletic program is located in the local market. This needs to be accessible to the athletic program throughout the year and be able to conduct on-campus visits weekly.

Price for this program is $41,468 annual for materials and instruction. The cost for employing the chaplain is $65,000 annually with a $15,000 stipend for a vehicle. The median

salary for a chaplain working in the Seattle area is $47,572. FCA is comparable with regard to

salary (PayScale Report, n.d., p.2). However, once a chaplain has been serving for ten plus years in FCA, their salary is increased to $65,000. In addition, FCA accounts for a car stipend given the travel that occurs with their positions. This makes the entire cost of implementation

10 53

$126,468 annually. This money would be received in the form of a donation to FCA on behalf of the serving representative.

Section V. Marketing Operations and Organization:

Once the FCA representative is established on campus, there will be various ways in which the program will be marketed to student-athletes. Information would be displayed in the

Student Athletic Academic Services (SAAS) to inform the students about the program and different elements that are being offered. Also, the bio of the representative from FCA will be displayed so the students can get to know the person. Teams in their own individual meetings can choose to have the representative speak to the student-athletes and give a direct presentation.

It is important that when establishing this type of program that the students are made aware of their resources and that would be stage one of the marketing operations.

Stage two would consist of both the school and the member from FCA sending emails and mail to the parents of the student-athletes. In these mailings would be the visions and mission of the program along with upcoming events with regards to FCA. This way, parents can know that their student-athlete is being cared for and the manner in which it is taking place. The third and final stage would be targeting prospective student-athletes and making them aware of the program that the university is offering. This makes the school intriguing for future prospects. This will also appeal to the donors because they want to make sure their investment is being put to use. It would also be an added incentive to know potential student-athletes would be interested in such a program as recruiting is an important element to growth of athletic programs.

Section VI. Operations:

11 54

For this particular implementation of the program, the location can be the school.

Facilities would be provided at no cost. The university and FCA representative would be engaging in an agreement to help each other meet the demand. No equipment would be required to fulfill the program. Materials would include manuals for both Maximize and CLIMB equal to the $41,468 discussed above. No outsourcing would be required. The FCA representative would manage all the necessary materials.

The FCA representative would be managing the programs as chaplain and ambassador to the school. The cost as listed above would be $65,000 plus a $15,000 car stipend. This is a one-person operation when it comes to having someone on-campus. The representative from

FCA serves the student-athletes by providing all the services and being available locally to the campus. Coaches and student-athletes may need advising during critical times and it is important for this person to be able to act and respond.

Section VII. The Research and Development Organization:

Research and development for an FCA program at a university is well established.

Universities have developed models for such a program and, currently, additional universities are coming on board with such a position. Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and the University of

Mississippi are three programs that have found success with adapting the role of FCA on their campuses as it pertains to the development of student-athletes. The Head Football Coach at

Virginia Tech, Frank M. Beamer, discusses the role that FCA plays in his program. He states that" ... our FCA Team Chaplain ... has been instrumental in the success of our players both on and off the field. "He serves as a positive influence in the lives of our student-athletes" (Beamer,

2010, p.1 ). Other programs have picked up on this concept and have even created staff positions

12 55

to further the development of their student-athletes.

Notre Dame recently announced their hiring for the position of Student Welfare and

Development. This position is dedicated to developing student-athletes. The goal is to help these talented people become leaders (UND.com, 2013, p.1 ). The research is showing that there is evidence that these programs are having an impact on the development of student-athletes.

These programs can be managed with one person at the head as long as they have the experience and background necessary to carry out the job function.

Section VIII. The Finance Organization:

The finance for the project will consist of targeting the right donors who are in support of developing the well-rounded student-athlete. It is important to note that not all donors are passionate about this type of project, so these donors will need to be identified through market research. Most universities already conduct this type ofresearch, however, if this is not the case, a questionnaire will be developed to be passed out to the current and potential future donors.

As stated above, the entire cost of the program will be $126,468.00. However, this would not be applied until year four of the project. The first phase is establishing the mentorship role, which will cost $85,000.00. This is broken out with $65,000.00 in annual salary, 15,000.00 in a

stipend for a vehicle and $5,000 for payroll taxes. The money will be donated to FCA in the representative's name and then FCA will disperse the funds to the representative. Therefore, the university will not have any financial dealings with the FCA organization directly.

Section IX. Management:

The management for this program will require having an established FCA representative who is capable of working with student-athletes, coaches, school officials and donors of the

13 56

athletic programs. Ideally, this person would have six to ten years of experience with the FCA organization. This person would have connections to the local community and would have been a former student-athlete them self. The person would have a commitment to education and ultimately have a passion for student-athletes and their well-being.

An organizational structure would need to be established to support this program. An executive would be put together as a check and balance system. The members of this executive team would be serving as volunteers of the FCA representative. Below, a flow chart can be viewed with how the structure would look for the entire operation.

Organization Structure:

FCA Representative I Executive Team I Finance Committee Ministry Program Event Committee t---- t---- Committee

The FCA representative is the lead in this organizational chart. This person will be responsible for putting together an executive team to help organize and maintain records of the work that is being conducted at the university. The representative will also need a finance committee to maintain financial records and monitor budgets. The Ministry program committee will be responsible for the programming and materials used by the FCA representative. Finally, the event committee will be responsible for the community outreach assignments.

14 57

Section X. Financial Analysis:

By establishing a committee often donors who are willing to donate $10,000 each, this program will be in a position to operate. As one can see from the attached budget sheet with established funds of $100,000, the FCA can receive the necessary funds to supply the representative. As you will recall, the mentorship program will cost $85,000, and by asking for

$100,000 this puts the university in a great position of meeting that requirement and building towards the future.

With the additional $15,000 there are a number of decisions that can be made for the vision of the future. The money can go towards fundraisers that will help generate more funds for the FCA program. Other schools, to help maintain their FCA programs, have used fundraisers in the past. Also, the money will be used to help recruit new donors for the organization. However, none of these decisions will be made until the appropriate board, outlined in the management section, is fully deployed.

Section XI. Risk Analysis:

The major concern for this project is finding the right donors that are willing to help build the program at the university. There are always obstacles when starting a new project, especially one that has such specific requirements. Also, the timing of this project is critical, as it needs to be established in the next few months in preparations for the upcoming 2013 season. However, with the right people on board to find the donors and promote the program the initial concerns can become obsolete. This is evident since the issue of establishing a world of humanitarians as well as athletes matters to the public (Bachman, 2013, p.1). We are given an example of this in the article, which compares volunteer services to top tier football players at the Division I level.

From: Kyle Pifer

~~ Date: Tuesday, April 30, 2013 9:43 AM To: Office 2004 Test Drive User Subject: FCA and Donations

Erik,

I'll try to make my last one of the week. It's one that I've been stewing on for a while and I asked Marilou in our office to evaluate it first (see below). I'm still not convinced that I'm comfortable heading down this path, but I'm not necessarily seeing anything that would stop it either.

Student-athletes can be involved in fund-raising activities for charitable causes, like the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (12.5.1.1). SA's can also receive benefits from these types of organizations the same as any other student on campus (16.10.1.3).

We have a new team chaplain that is bringing with him some ideas from his time with Ole Miss. He's organized a weekly meeting on campus for FCA athletes (NCAA, club and intra murals). He's traveling with teams and visiting practices. He's incorporating himself into our department. That's all fine. His idea is to start raising money for FCA trips. He would like the SA's that are involved with FCA to solicit money and attend fund-raisers. He would especially like the athletes that will actually take part in FCA events to be the ones that actually help fund-raise. In essence, the SA's would be soliciting money so that they could travel with FCA to take part in a project (e.g. trips to other parts of the country/continent to build a church, etc.). Further, he would like to set up the fund-raising efforts to coincide with other UW athletic events like competitions and award banquets. He envisions a table staffed with SA's asking for donations for projects in which the SA's will personally take part.

Marilou mentions 12.1.2.1.6.1, but that is aimed more at athletics participation, not something like FCA. Before I allow a table to show up at our football games next season, I wanted to run it by you. Maybe I'm not the first school to ask. Our chaplain said that Ole Miss had everything checked out with the NCAA, but they've had some turnover in their compliance office. When I called, they said they didn't have access to anything older than 2010 or 2011 (doesn't sound like an ideal situation).

Kyle,

I think this is a pretty straight up NCAA 12.5.1.1 activity. And, as the interpretation points out below, S-As can fundraise for this organization.

The interpretation was issued to make it clear that S-As couldn't help FCA raise funds for PSAs, but it's not a problem if the funds the S-As raise are earmarked for their own use.

Student-athlete autographing items for auction for Fellowship of Christian Athletes Date Issued: Feb 24, 1989 Type: Staff g. Student-Athlete Autographing Items for Auction for Fellowship of Christian Athletes: Reviewed a situation in which a member institution's student-athlete will autograph items (e.g., jerseys, footballs, photographs) for a

1 71 Fellowship of Christian Athletes auction, in which the proceeds are earmarked to send individuals to Fellowship of Christian Athletes summer camps; determined that Bylaw 12.5.1.1.2 [charitable or educational promotional activities] and Bylaw 13.15 (precollege expense) would not preclude such an arrangement, provided funds received from such sources are commingled with other funds to send such individuals to the camps and with the understanding that no individual receive such expenses in the student-athlete's name.

Sound good?

From: Marilou Michelena Sent: Monday, April 29, 2013 4:34 PM To: Kyle Pifer Subject: FCA question

Hi Kyle, A question/concern regarding Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).

Question: Can student-athletes solicit financial support from UW athletic boosters at UW events, (i.e. Dinner with a Dawg, end of season banquets, etc.) for FCA events, trips, organizational expenses, etc.?

Concerns: 16.10.1.3 allows for service or religious organizations to provide expenses for attending camps or trips but there is no regulation of FCA and how or from whom it receives funds.

Teams, coaches and SA's could easily begin soliciting funds on behalf of FCA and the trips and conferences could then be used as a recruiting tool. Can we end up in a situation where coaches start telling recruits that at UW, they can join this club and get an all-expense paid trip to Orlando for a weekend or a week in a South American country.

There isn't a lot about religious organizations and fundraising but SLR waiver 11827 allowed an institutions student government to provide $1,500 to its FCA student organization to supplement the cost associated with attending a national FCA conference. It was noted in the rationale that the money was not awarded by an athletic organization, any registered student organization could receive financial support from the student government, and finally the funding was awarded without any knowledge of the recipients.

Although boosters aren't considered an organization, they could easily know the intended recipients (since the student athletes could be directly requesting funds for their own trips through FCA). Could we also fall into an issue with the intent of 12.1.2.1.6.1? Although the students aren't receiving funds specifically for athletics participation they are essentially asking and receiving funds from non-relatives because of their athletic participation and notoriety.

Title: 16.10.1.3 - Service or Religious Organization Encampments. Nationally recognized service organizations and religious groups may underwrite the actual and necessary expenses of student-athletes attending such encampments. Neither the institution nor an athletically related organization may underwrite such expenses. [R](Revised: 4/27/00 effective 8/1/00, 4/2/10)

2 72

Title: 12.1.2.1.6.1 - Donations Credited to or Earmarked for a Prospective or Enrolled Student-Athlete. Donations credited to or earmarked for a prospective or enrolled student-athlete for athletics participation (e.g., as an individual or a member of a team) from a sponsor (e.g., neighbor, business) other than the individual's relatives or legal guardians are considered improper benefits. (See Bylaw 12.1.2.1.4.5.1.) (Adopted: 8/26/10, Revised: 4/26/12)

Kyle,

I think you would be headed in the right direction if you had the individual fill out the staff volunteer paperwork and the contact occurs on campus.

Erik,

Following up on number two below to get a sense of your comfort level. This is the same question I had when it came to R W G 11-2 when it came to defining a staff member for purposes of calling recruits. We don't pay our team chaplain as an employee, but we occasionally pay for his travel expenses to attend away competitions. We do the same thing for volunteer coaches. Then again, we also do that for boosters on occasion. Do you think I could justify him as a volunteer employee if we put him through the same documentation and process for adding a volunteer coach?

Thanks,

Erik,

I have two unrelated subjects.

First, one of our men's basketball signees was selected as a McDonald's All-American. He's from Vegas and is holding a media event at the local Ronald McDonald House on Thursday (our first tournament game is Wednesday night against WSU). If timing works out, would it be permissible for our coaches to be present during the media activity. Since he's signed, there are no restrictions on off-campus contacts (other than dead periods). Should I be concerned about publicizing an off-campus contact? I don't think I need to based on the fact he's signed. What do you think?

Honestly, Kyle, I think NCAA 13.10.1 applies to all PSAs, both signees and not. So, given the fact that your coaches already know that media will be there, they should arrange to have contact with the signee at another time when they are in Las Vegas.

Our gymnastics team is asking if they can get some non-UW employees involved in an official visit. We have a recruit that would like to explore the religious offerings we have. The vast majority of those type of activities occurs via off-campus groups (separation of state and religion). Could we have her meet with a church member or a campus representative from Athletes In Action even if they aren't employed by UW (of course, we wouldn't use anyone that meets the definition of a booster, but I can see how this would automatically make them one)? It's probably a no, but thought I would ask.

2 83

Unless you consider these individuals to be UW staff members, they cannot have contact with visiting recruits.

We've had a violation before when a team chaplain who was not an institutional employee met with a PSA's parents during a official visit weekend.

Gregg: Good morning. Thanks for keeping me updated.

I know how much time Coach Petersen put's into his (our) "leadership" message with the staff and entire team. let's take a "step back" on doing anything with the team as far as a "leadership" topic. As mentioned, since we are the "new" staff, we are constantly evaluating everything within our department. I know Ink Aleaga (Academic Support) does some classes in the Spring term with the team, and we are currently evaluating that content as well. So we are evaluating everything and trying to send one message to our team when it comes to leadership .... That all starts and stops with Coach Petersen ...

So for now, let's not set anything with our players. let's get through Spring quarter and see what happens ....

Thanks

Mike

Mike,

I talked with about a dozen players at dinner last night about their interest in participating in a "Football Team" Bible/Leadership Study and got an overwhelmingly affirmative response. I left 2 study curriculum books (Tony Dungy as the primary) in your office yesterday.

Understanding his concern about consistent messaging, I would like to review curriculum content with Coach Peterson, and identify a time, if this is acceptable to him, to schedule the Bible Study.

Let me know your thoughts. Appreciate your input.
