He loved music, and even though he didn’t play or sing, it was always around. Tonight, however, something on the radio would change my life. An intoxicating sound came through the speakers of the car and I was enchanted. It was sweet and soulful. I turned to my dad and asked, “What is that?” He said, “a saxophone.” I repeated the word over and over in my head so that I wouldn’t forget. I even wrote it down on a sheet of paper once we got home. That was the instrument that I wanted to play. The song was Harlem Nocturne. I would like to thank my mom and dad for never giving up on me and my passion for the arts even when I thought I had. Band rehearsals, private lessons, concert band, marching band, jazz band, summer camps, concerts, competitions, parades, parades, parades… They have always been there for me, chauffeuring me, supporting me, happy for me, and never questioning this crazy career that I have chosen. Without their dreams for my brother and me to experience anything and everything life could offer, none of who I am today would be possible. Thank you to my brother, Daniel, for being there when I needed to talk and for inspiring me to keep working despite obstacles. My husband, Jeremy, deserves an award for living with me during this process. He helped me through stress-out sessions and selflessly supported my decision to move to Saint Paul for six months while he remained in Texas so that I could participate in this fellowship opportunity. He always motivates me to work harder than I think I can and inspires me every day with his enthusiasm and commitment to learning. ii Texas Tech University, Michelle Bair, May 2009 Many of my achievements would not be possible if it weren’t for the support, guidance, and inspiration of my mentors. Dr. Christopher Smith, Prof. Angela Mariani, and Dr. Stacey Jocoy became my family away from home and inspire me to become a better scholar, teacher, and person. Thank you to the League of American Orchestras for making this fellowship possible and to the spectacular SPCO staff for including me in your projects and conversations, answering my questions, and for making me a part of the team. Thank you to Theresa Gienapp and Jon Limbacher of the SPCO for their willingness to grant me almost unlimited access to the organization and for providing me with an education and experience that far exceeded my expectations. And a special thank you to my excellent dissertation committee: Dr. Christopher Smith, Dr. Michael Stoune, Prof. Angela Mariani, Dr. Linda Donahue, and Dr. William Gelber. iii Texas Tech University, Michelle Bair, May 2009 Table of Contents Acknowledgements ................................................................................................................. ii Abstract .................................................................................................................................. vii List of Figures ......................................................................................................................... ix List of Abreviations................................................................................................................ xi Chapters I. It was not, for example, until the late 1960s and early ‘70s that formal arts management training was offered in higher education. In 1942, the League of American Orchestras (the League) was founded with the goal of providing advocacy and educational resources
