Of Welsh parentage, song came naturally in his expression. His musical studies were to an extent unconventional in that his father’s extensive library of the lyric poets of the 16th and 17th centuries provided the initial lyric impulse which, coloured by his encounters with the music of Grieg, Scarlatti and Clementi – and later Tallis – and the significant absence in the curriculum of the Viennese classics – led to the development of a completely original voice. -

Although her compositions include a Trumpet concerto and six operas, Roe considers herself a miniaturist with solo songs at the heart of her work. Amongst over 300 vocal works, this approach has led to some unusual combinations of voices and instruments and settings of some challenging texts; either because selected by the commissioners or that they were appropriate for a particular performance. -

Prior to that, she gained a Bachelor of Music degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Voice Perfor- mance from the New Zealand School of Music at Victoria University. Isabella’s opera work includes the lead role of Gulnara in Verdi’s II corsaro. She has ISABELLA taken part in masterclasses with artists such as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Montserrat MOORE Caballé. Her most recent achievements include: winning the 2015 Joan Sutherland and New Zealand | 25 Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award in Sydney; second place in the 2015 Sydney Eistedd- fod McDonald’s Operatic Aria; winning the 2015 Sydney Eisteddfod Joan Sutherland Memorial Senior Vocal Scholarship; winning the 2014 New Zealand Aria Competition in Rotorua (NZ); winning the 2014 IFAC Australian Singing Competition (The ‘Mathy’) in Sydney and winning the prestigious 2014 New Zealand Lexus Song Quest Competi- tion in Auckland (NZ). Isabella was a finalist in the 2014 ROSL Music Competition in London where she received an International Competitor’s Award. -

Further updating has been undertaken in addition to the generous assistance of Philip Stuart via his LSO discography which he compiled for the Orchestra’s centenary in 2004 and has kept updated. Inevitably there are a number of missing credits for producers and engineers in the earliest years as these facts no longer survive. Additionally some exact dates have not been tracked down. IVOR GURNEY High above Gloucester and the Severn Plain Two days of walks, talks, discussions and concerts exploring the homeland, poetry, music and mind of Gloucestershire’s singular composer poet. 14th & 15th September 2018 Talks and concerts at: The Ivor Gurney Hall Pitt Street, Gloucester gl1 2bh “To my own County where I was born, and the earth entered into my making and into my blood” (from To Gloucestershire) Ivor Gurney, musician and poet (1890–1937) recognised the debt he owed to his native Gloucestershire as the well-spring of his joy and creativity, and a refuge from mental distress. Music and poetry were ways of capturing the true essence of these landscapes and places. Gurney was a prolific writer – Dr Philip Lancaster, Gurney’s archivist, suggests that close to 2000 poems exist. Gurney’s poetry is often intense and deeply personal, sometimes difficult, but always vibrant with meaning. His music includes song settings and orchestral music, with new musical scores and new performances of his work appearing at frequent intervals. His music can be startling, often restless and Event Co-ordinator unusually structured but alive with moments of fluidity and genius. Supported by Arts Council England 1 Introduction to the 2005/6 Royal Opera Season – Antonio Pappano I’m really thrilled with the unusual mix of work the new Season offers. We open with concert performances of Donizetti’s last opera, Dom Sébastien. It’s one of Donizetti’s greatest achievements and yet it’s rarely heard. It’s bigger than the Donizetti we know and love and probably sounds more Verdian to our ears, but it’s an unusual piece in that it has a significant role (Zayda) for a mezzo-soprano instead of the usual soprano – we have Vesselina Kasarova singing the part. Piero Faggioni’s production of La fanciulla del West is an old Covent Garden favourite from the last 30 years and one I’ve always wanted to revive. It’s a piece that otherwise rarely comes up, and it deserves a renaissance. The Wild West setting seems so improbable but it works so well – we all love to see a Western, and Puccini’s music is very cinematic, brilliantly conjuring up the locale and colours of America. It’s one of his most sophisticated scores, as sophisticated, if not more so, than Turandot. -

THE IVOR GURNEY SOCIETY NEWSLETTER NUMBER 52 October 2012 The Society’s Spring Weekend, May 5/6 2012 This year the Gurney Society’s Spring Weekend took place in Gloucester. Saturday’s events were based in the atmospheric surroundings of the cathedral, a place with many Gurney connections. The day began with a song recital featuring Michael Lampard and Christopher Boodle, followed by the Society’s AGM. In the afternoon, Ian Partridge was interviewed and Philip Lancaster spoke about Gurney’s close links with the cathedral. The day was beautifully rounded off with an organ recital by Ashley Grote and evensong with the Cathedral Choir. The latter included Gurney’s Psalm 23 and Canticles: Howells in G plus Gurney’s Anthem, ‘Since I On Sunday morning, Graham believe in God the Father Middleton led a walk around Almighty’. This well-attended event was honoured by the presence in Gloucester of two distinguished Australians, one in the audience and the other as soloist. Both are devotees of English art song and had travelled to the UK especially for the occasion.
