Did you know… The earliest settlements in the Luton area were at Round Green and Mixes Hill, where Paleolithic encampments (about 250,000 years old) have been found. Settlements re-appeared after the ice had re-treated in the Mesolithic period around 8000 BC. Traces of these settlements have been found in the Leagrave area of the modern town. Remains from the Neolithic period (4500–2500 BC in this area) are much more common. A particular concentration of Neolithic burials occurs at Galley Hill. The most prominent Neolithic structure is Waulud's Bank – a henge dating from around 3000 BC. From the Neolithic on-wards, the area seems to have been populated, but without any single large settlement.

On this day in Rovers history… In 1909 Rovers ran riot over Hitchin Town, winning 8-0

In 1976 there was a 3-0 away win at Holbeach United

Most recently, in 2010, Rovers won 2-1 away at Shefford Town & Campton in the Beds. Senior Trophy Luton are the current holders of this competition after winning a sensational final last season against Biggleswade Town by 4-3. It was the runners up that had put Kempston out of the competition in the first round. Rovers got to the semi-final in 2016-17, without actually scoring a goal. In the first round and the quarter final, Rovers relied on penalties after goal-less draws. Luton have used this competition in recent seasons as a proving ground for their younger players, fringe players and senior figures needing some game time. Rovers last success in the competition came back in 1992, when a single goal from Darren King saw off Totternhoe at Roker Park, the home of Stotfold. It was Kempston’s fourth time lifting the trophy. Kempston Rovers 135 years of Football History

Kempston Rovers were formed in 1884 and entered the Bedford & District League. Rover’s first league championship was won in 1908 and twelve months later Rover’s retained the title while also carrying off the Bedfordshire Senior Cup and North Beds Charity Cup. The Walnut Boys, the club’s official nickname, comes from the large walnut orchard in Kempston around the time of foundation. This identity is carried forward by one of the main supporters’ groups at the club, “The Nuts on Tour”. 1973 saw the start of a new era as Kempston relocated to a new ground further down Hillgrounds Road. A magnificent season saw the Walnut Boys storm to the Premier title losing only once in 32 games. A golden period in the club's history saw League Cup successes in 1975 and 1977; the Beds Senior Cup was again captured in 1977 while the Walnut Boys reached the last 16 of the FA Vase in 1975. In 1986, the club moved again, this time to the current ground, their third in the same road. Kempston last won the county’s highest honour, the Beds. Senior Cup, in 1992, the fourth time the trophy has come to Hillgrounds. In 2002 Kempston Rovers and Kempston Colts began an alliance to pool resources/personnel under the name AFC Kempston. The youth teams at Rovers still go by the name “Colts”, keeping the history of youth football in the town alive. The beginning of 2005 saw the start of major re-developments at Hillgrounds Road with the building of new changing facilities and the building of an artificial training pitch, which is available to book all year round for training sessions, small sided games or just a kick around with friends. The new ground facilities were completed in 2006 and along with a new stand; on-going ground improvements and the existing clubhouse refurbished and ready to hire for functions and events, Kempston now have some of the best facilities in the area for non-league football. Midway through the 2013-14 season James Stoyles and Gary Flinn took over the 1st Team managerial duties before, in 2015-16, Rovers won the United Counties Football League Premier Division, with a thrilling final win on the last day of the season, a campaign in which they only lost one league game. This resulted in promotion and saw us move into the Southern League Division One which represents the highest level we have attained within the FA pyramid system so far. Since promotion, the club has twice narrowly missed out on a place in the end of season promotion play offs. On both occasions, finishing above some of the more established sides in the division. The club currently operates one of the largest youth systems in the county, with over thirty sides at various age groups and a senior development side. There is a supporters’ club that holds various functions throughout the season to support the first team.

Luton Town Football Club was formed on April 11th 1885 as a merger between local clubs, Luton Wanderers and Luton Excelsior, and although early games consisted of friendlies, a strong committee pushed behind the scenes and took the foresighted decision to pay three players in 1890, the first club in the south to do so. Founder member of the Southern League in 1894 the Town finished runners-up to Millwall in each of the first two seasons but the ambitious club wanted more and made a bid for election to the Football League. Their initial proposition failed and a season had to be spent in the United League before they were accepted into Football League Division Two in 1897. Unfortunately after three years of increasing struggle, in a predominantly northern based league, the club took the brave decision to rejoin a, now much stronger, Southern League which eventually formed a new Division Three of the Football League in 1920. By the mid-1930’s, such was the growth in population in Luton and surrounding area, that the Board of the club felt that they could afford to push the boat out and spend some money on the side, safe in the knowledge that spectator support would be forthcoming. With this decision taken, great changes were made within the club and players that would normally have been outside their reach were taken on and, as predicted, the crowds increased rapidly. Promotion to Division Two was narrowly missed in 1936 but the team made no mistake the following season when they won the Division Three championship on the back of a superb home record and the 55 goals of Joe Payne. LUTON TOWN FC History Part 2

Further promotion in 1955, buoyed by the goals of record goalscorer Gordon Turner and the versatile talents of Bob Morton, saw the Hatters in the top flight for five seasons which included a trip to Wembley in the 1959 F A Cup final. Sadly, this prefaced a slump which saw the team drop to Division Four by 1965 but they then bounced back to enjoy ten years at the top after winning the championship of the old Division Two in style in 1982, aided by players such as Ricky Hill, Brian Stein and Mal Donaghy under the managership of .

April 24th 1988 will forever go down as a red letter day for all Luton supporters as the Town won the first major trophy in their long history with Brian Stein sweeping home a last minute winner as mighty Arsenal were beaten 3-2 in the Littlewoods Cup final.

An artificial surface laid at in 1985 was ripped up six years later just as the club was about to be relegated from Division One and the riches of the Premier League, which the Hatters were founder members of but unable to compete in, commenced.

Since that time the club has enjoyed F.A.Cup semi-finals and promotion to the Championship but on the other side of the coin a draconian points deduction saw the club cruelly relegated from the Football League in 2009 and despite valiant attempts to return it proved more difficult to regain past glories than originally anticipated. In 2014, however, after five years away, the team won promotion back to the Football League in glorious fashion.

Being a Luton Town supporter has, however, been anything but dull over the past 132 years! Match Report A stormy afternoom

By Matthew Wilmot Cambridge City 1 – 0 Kempston Rovers

Kempston Rovers arrived at Histon to face Cambridge City with Thomas Wyant making his league debut for the club after being drafted in to replace the departed Conway. The hosts began the brighter and saw Ryan Sharman drag a shot wide in the early minutes after receiving a cut back in the area. Rovers had to wait until the quarter hour before their first attempts on goal, first Shane Bush had a header deflected wide then moments later, good work on the right saw Ben Shepherd cross in, Liam Gooch got a hand to the cross to tip it up and cause Bush to turn, he laid it back to Josh Crawley. Crawley squared to Ben Acquaye, his first time shot was strongly blocked by Gooch in the City goal. Then the heavens opened. The downpour was unrelenting for the rest of the game, causing a few players to slip and slide. After the half hour, Hateley Mercer was cautioned for a slide tackle that appeared to be late. From the free kick, the attack broke down but wasn’t cleared and Josh Simpson, making his first City appearance in ten years after returning to the club, curled over. Josh Crawley had Rovers best chance of the half ten minutes before the break, found by the long throw of Mercer, his sidefooted effort was comfortable for Gooch to deal with. There were two further cautions for Kempston before the break and a further flash point as Ben Acquaye tangled with an opponent. Amid Cambridge claims the young winger kicked out off the ball, City’s Josh Oyinsan was seen shoving McNulty in front of the referee. The match official brought the two sides together and asked for calm rather than dish cards. After the break, Kempston should’ve taken the lead, a surging run from Acquaye saw him thread a pass to Bush who squared the ball back toward Josh Crawley, but the forward couldn’t quite stretch enough to turn the ball in. Moments later, City should’ve scored, Oyinsan produced a lung-busting run down the right hand side and crossed in for James Hall, but the City marksman sidefooted over the bar from inside the six yard box. Ben Shepherd was the fourth Kempston name in the referee’s notebook when he slid in from behind on Towner. Just before the hour mark Cambridge did have the ball in the back of the net, a corner played in from the right appeared to missed by Wyant and was bundled in on the line only for the referee to give a free kick for a foul on the keeper. Oyinsan was booked for an over-zealous protest at the decision. Shortly after the hour, tempers matched the weather as Rovers joint manager Gary Flinn protested to the referee that Shane Bush was being held at a throw in, already warned in the first half Flinn was dismissed from the dugout. Olunkanmi drew a smart save from Wyant as City looked to press the game before Ben Acquaye had two long shots in as many minutes deflect wide of the target. The game was sealed in the seventieth minute however, Mercer, already booked lunged into a challenge on the edge of the box and was shown a second yellow card, provoking a strong reaction from the home faithful. Hall swung the resultant free kick goalwards, where it appeared to take a nick off a Kempston head to find the net. City’s Adam Capel lead the celebrations and subsequently claimed the goal via twitter, but the unlucky Josh Crawley looked to have gotten the decisive touch. A goal down and a man down, Rovers were forced to hang on as Sharman cut in and saw his shot deflect inches over the bar with Wyant stranded. The young keeper produced another fine save to deny Oyinsan’s stinging effort with fifteen minutes to go. Wyant again kept Kempston in the game, smothering a one on one situation with Towner. Sub Sam Johnson attempted a robust challenge late on, which not only saw him cautioned but also injured. Alex Collard almost grabbed an unlikely equaliser, latching on to a deep free kick, but saw it turned away at the near post for a corner. Hall exploited the space at the back as Rovers tried to press for a late leveller, but his breakaway effort slipped just wide of the post. Nathan Tshikuna bustled his way into the box in stoppage time but his shot lacked any real power. The referee showed his ninth card of the game late on to Capel for dissent at the award of a free kick. Match Report Sports edge it

By Matthew Wilmot Kempston Rovers 1 - 2 Peterborough Sports

Rovers suffered their fifth home defeat in six league games this season at the hands of a spirited Peterborough Sports side pushing hard at the top end of the table Having restored the senior players to the starting line up, Rovers gave a first start to Aaron King, following his brief cameo against Dunstable Town. The game started slowly and took until the twentieth minute for a serious effort on goal to materialise. Sports’ McCammon cutting back to Moreman who flashed his effort wide at the near post. Moments later, Rovers had a glorious chance to open the scoring when a Ben Shepherd free kick was allowed to travel all the way through to the back post where Alex Collard couldn’t get enough on the ball to direct it back goalwards. On the half hour, Tom Wyant had to be alert to smother an attack, Jones’ follow up effort was weak and comfortably gathered by Rovers new number one. Ten minutes before the break, Shepherd whipped a dangerous free kick inches wide of the post. Ben Acquaye combined beautifully with Aaron King on the edge of the box to set up the latter with a powerful shot, which required a block on the line to deny Rovers a goal. Right on half time, Sports’ Avelino Viera was millimetres from making contact at the far post from a free kick knockdown. The two sides left the field level at the break. The second half began just as the first had ended, with both teams playing some attractive football and looking to win the game. Josh Crawley was denied by a last ditch block early on after Shepherd played in King to provide the cross which led to the block. King was again in the thick of things on the hour mark when he was fed by Crawley to go clear one on one by he was thwarted by Moat. Moments later the deadlock was broken when Kyal McNulty lofted the ball into King who unleashed a shot across goal, which was diverted back out into the middle where Ben Acquaye was on hand to tap the ball home for the opening goal. With fifteen minutes to play Sports deservedly got themselves level, a deep cross from the left was turned back across goal by the impressive Viera for sub Sano-Sani to chest home on the goal line. With five minutes to play it looked as though Tom Wyant had saved a point for Rovers when he made a point blank range save from Mark Jones’ header. It was not to be however, two minutes from time, Viera found space to whip in a right wing cross for Jones to head home from eight yards to snatch the win for the visitors and break Kempston hearts after a terrific battling performance. Other results conspired to drop Kempston down to fifteenth place in the table ahead of next weekends’ trip to Didcot Town. On Tuesday, Rovers have the pleasure of hosting Luton Town in the Bedfordshire Senior Cup, kick off at seven forty five.
