Dear Johnians and Well-wishers,

We, at St. John’s College Jaffna, are very fortunate that the Educational Support Program initiated for the displaced Children have so far been progressing satisfactorily to its intended goal. This program would not have been possible, without the generous help of our sponsors, the Old Boys, Well-wishers and welfare supporting Organizations. All activities undertaken for the benefit of the students have been illustrated in the following pages.

The College admitted 548 school going Children released from the Welfare Centres of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP). 236 Children were admitted to the Hostel. They now enjoy free education, but free meals, accommodation and recreation facilities. In addition, they are provided with clothing for their everyday life, and appropriate materials for their Education and Sport.

As the Government undertakes the resettlement programme for the IDP, some of the children have joined their family who have resettled. Logistics prevent some Children from continuing their education.

At present, we have 435 enrolled children, of whom 185 are boarded in the Hostel. Of the 435 children 397 enjoy sponsorship, - thanks to the Old Boys and well-wishers. We need sponsors for only 38 in the Hostel. We are unable to accommodate any further students at this time, but will consider all applications in 2011 for all new admission, which will be based on Merit and availability of funds from any source. Since the rainy seasons are close we need to improve on basic facilities.

I thank the Old Boys and Well-wishers for their support for this worthy cause by their generous sponsorship for the children.

Thank you, Sincerely yours,

Rev. N.J.Gnanaponrajah Principal St. John’s College

Stage 1 - A proposed Building for Classrooms and Hostel There is a real need for hostel accommodation. This is partly due to damage by the war and decay of older buildings, and an increased demand for hostel accommodation. The proposed building is meant to provide more hostel space, accommodation for the hostel-master and also to meet other needs of the students. Due to shortage of available land it is proposed that we have a four-storeyed building, (To be built at the site of the old Evart’s Hostel). We have been promised a sum of money for this purpose, and progress will depend on the support we receive. It is suggested that we call for donations to build a floor, or a section, or a room, to meet our needs.

Aim: 1. Accommodation (permanent) for the displaced / needy children (in place of Evarts Hostel) (Presently, the students are accommodated in the classrooms) 2. Classrooms for the displaced / needy children (Currently, temporary sheds and partitioned rooms are used as classrooms.) 3. Residence for Hostel Masters (in place of three staff quarters – to look after the children with parental love and care.)

I congratulate you all, and earnestly pray that God will steer you all through a very difficult pathway. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you.” Looking at the pictures of so many little boys in their smart uniforms, the activities of teachers, the well-maintained buildings, and the fine gardens gives much hope for the future.
