The cameraman sees them getting engaged before anyone in the office has a clue. Even the news of their pregnancy is witnessed first by the camera crew. Jim and Pam’s boss, Michael, and other employees, such as Dwight, Angela and others, also share this trend of self-disclosure to the cameraman. They reveal secrets and embarrassing stories to the cameraman, showing a private side of themselves that most of their co-workers never see. First the term “mock-documentary” is explained before specifically discussing the The Office. Next the terms and theories from scholarly sources that relate the topic of self-disclosure to strangers are reviewed. Consequential strangers, weak ties, the stranger- on-a-train phenomenon, and para-social interaction are studied in relation to the development of a new listening stranger theory. -

The Invisible Journalist: Understanding the Role of the Documentary Filmmaker as Portrayed in The Office Massiel Bobadilla JOUR575 –Joe Saltzman Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture May 5, 2011 Bobadilla 2 ABSTRACT: This study aims to shed light on the enigmatic ‘mockumentary’ filmmaker of The Office by using specific examples from the show’s first six seasons to understand how the filmmaker is impacted by and impacts concepts of journalism and the invasion of privacy. Similarly, the filmmaker in the American version of The Office will not only be compared and contrasted to the role of the filmmaker in the British version, but also will be compared to the anthropologic ethnographer an “outsider” attempting to capture life as faithfully as possible in a community to which he/she does not belong. The American interpretation of The Office branched out of Ricky Gervais’s British original of the same name with the pilot episode hitting the airwaves on NBC on March 24, 2005,1 to largely mixed reviews from critics, but a strong showing among viewers.2 The show’s basic premise is that of a faux documentary providing an inside look at the day-to-day life of the employees of a mid-level paper company. The primary focus centers on the socially inept branch manager, his even more inept right-hand-man, and the budding romance of the young and earnest paper salesman and the mild-mannered receptionist who happens to be inconveniently engaged to one of the branch’s warehouse workers. Right guys, ‘cause of gay? —Michael Scott I. INTRODUCTION On September 21, 2006, NBC’s hit comedy television show, The Office, aired an episode titled “Gay Witch Hunt.”1 The Office is a “mockumentary” about Dunder-Mifflin, a mid-sized paper company. The camera crew “documents” the lives of the office workers as they deal with the foibles of their comically half-witted boss, Michael Scott. The episode “Gay Witch Hunt” follows Michael Scott’s horrifically funny series of inappropriate antics as he tries to rectify his politically incorrect outing of a gay character, the accountant Oscar Martinez.2 After calling Oscar “faggy,” Michael finds out that Oscar is an actual homosexual and panics.3 In the midst of facing backlash from corporate for his offenses, Michael tells the cameras, “[t]he company has made it my responsibility today to put an end to 100,000 years of being weirded out by gays.”4 Taking the responsibility seriously, Michael holds a conference meeting to apologize to Oscar and prove that he does not have a problem with homosexuals.5 * J.D. The associations between male homosexuality and cannibalism in horror films from the 1990s and the first decade of the twenty-first century are the result of a twofold drive. On one level, these films profoundly “Other” narratively-irredeemable villains, while at the same time providing another point of deviance for sympathetic villains to discard. At the same time, these films have a dramatic interest in creating villains and situations that maximize the audience’s revulsion and discomfort (and thus the catharsis via confrontation in a controlled setting, and transcendence through leaving the theatre). These films depict cannibalism as a homosocially transgressive act—a transgression that may not be immediately apparent to the victim of cannibalism. Cannibal horror depicts a threat to the presumed-normal and socially-accepted heterosexual and homosocial relationships that transcends mere moral panic or anti-gay hysteria. This genre develops cannibalism into a taboo even more horrifying to the viewer than societal mores would already have him or her believe. This abjection-association attempts to make monsters of those whose homosocial relationships in any way deviate from the heterosexual standard—most notably, homosexual men. -

NBC’s The Office is an American version of the British television show with the same name, it is said to represent the corrupt ways of the American business system, in this dissertation, I aim to find out how the treatment of different types of people does this. The problems that arose during the writing of this dissertation were mainly within the chapter looking at Sexuality. I found there wasn’t a lot of previous writing on it, so I had to come up with my own ideas and reasoning. There was also difficulty finding specific items written specifically on the American version of The Office as most work has been on the British version. This dissertation is going to be looking at the way that gender, race and sexuality is portrayed within the NBC television show The Office and how it represents the American business system, and how it used for comic effect. ! !
