Brief Industrial Profile of

1. General Characteristics of the District: For the purpose of administrative conveyance, the district is divided into 8 Tahsils and 8 Panchayat Samities. According to the 2001 Census, there was 556 Gram Panchayat for the purpose of Rural Development. The main crop grown in the district is paddy. Gondia district stretches over an area of 5641 Sq. Km. In the terms of area, Gondia district constitutes 1.83% of the total area of the State. Total population of the district according to 2001 census was 1200707 out of which 598834 were males and 601873 were females. Of the total population, 88% is residing in rural area and 12% is residing in Urban area. The density of the population according to the 2001 census was 213 persons/Sq. Km.

1.1 Location & Geographical Area: Gondia district lies between 20.39 to 21.38 degree North Latitude and 79.27 to 80.42 East longitudes. The Wainganga, bawanthadi is the major river of the district. It has a boarder on North with & district on the west, Rajnandgaon of to the East and to the south. The total area of the district is 5641 Sq. Kms. which is about 1.83% of the total area of Maharashtra State. Gondia is 1006 kms away from capital . Gondia is well connected by rail and national highway no. 6.

1.2 Topography:

Rice is the main crop of the district. Gondia district is unique in Maharashtra in sense that the entire area of the district is occupied by metamorphic rock and alluvium.

- Alluvium is developed all along major river courses such as Bagh, Chulbandh and Gadavi.

- Laterites are distributed all over the district but observed prominently in and Arjuni Moregaon.

- Metamorphic rocks like various granites, Gneiss, Schists, Phylites etc. are exposed throughout district.

- Gondia district is rich in economic minerals like manganese, kyanite, sillimanite corundum and pyrophyllite. Geomorphologically the district can be divided into two parts.

1) The north-Western, north eastern, south-eastern and central parts which have structural units like hills and ridges.

2) The northern, north-central, west central, south and south-west portions having undulating topography over denudational units like pediments and fluvial units

The major land use categories in district include

1) Buildup land

2) Agricultural land: which comprises of a) Kharip b) Rabi c) Double crop d) Fallow

3) Forest Land which includes a) deciduous Forest b) Degraded forest c) Forest blank d) Forest plantation

4) Waste land comprising of

b) Barren rocky/stony waste.

5) Water bodies which include

b) Rivers and streams.

6) Other comprising of mining area

The largest land use category in the district is that of agriculture. Precarious forest constitutes 90% of total area under forest which is maximum in south east and central parts.

Climate:

Gondia District experiences extreme variations in temperature with very hot summers and very cold winters and an average relative humidity of 62 percent. Minimum temperature of 7.4 D.C. and Maximum temperature of 47.5 D.C. recorded in the year 2011.

Rainfall:

Gondia district receives rainfall from South- Western winds mainly in the months of June, July, August and September. July and August are the months during which the maximum rainfall as well as maximum continuous rainfall occurs.

Gondia district lies at latitudes 20.39 and 21.38 North and longitudes 79.27 to 80.42 east. The adjoining districts to Gondia are on Northen side of

Madhya Pradesh and on eastern side of Chattisgarh state. To the south and west are district and of Maharashtra.

The district headquarter is situated at Gondia situated on Mumbai- Kolkata Railway route which is 1060 Km from Mumbai, capital of state.

Important places in the district:1) Navegaon Bandh : 65 Km south of Gondia in Arjunimoregaon Taluka is a National Park 2) : 30 Km south of Gondia in Sadak Arjuni Taluka is a National Park.

3) Birsi Airport: 12 Km North from Gondia. 4) Adani Power Plant: 30 Km from Gondia at Tiroda taluka.

1.3 Availability of Minerals:

Gondia District has been endowed with various valuable mineral resources. The important minerals found in the district are iron ore and quartz.The Other reserves are Silica ,Sea Sand and Vanadium Ore

1.4 FOREST

During the year 2010-11, an estimated 2833 Sq KM of area was under forest which constituted 50.22% of the total area. Forest resources contribute significantly to the economy of the district. Nagzira, 152 sq km and Navegaon, 133 sq km are the national reserve forests. Bamboo, tendu leaves and teak wood are the main resources of the district.

1.5 Administrative set up

Administrative headquarter is at Gondia. District consists of 2 s ubdivisions

Gondia and Deori. There are 8 tehsils namely, Gondia, , Morgaon Arjuni, ,

Tiroda, Deori, , Sadak arjuni. There are 556 Grampanchayats.
