Puritans: “What God’s Word says, God is saying.” Inerrancy: Inerrancy is the view that when all the facts become known, they will demonstrate that the Bible in its original autographs and correctly interpreted is entirely true and never false in all it affirms, whether that relates to doctrine or ethics or to social, physical or life sciences (P.D. Feinburg; Evangelical Dictionary of Theology; ed. Elwell). It is wholly trustworthy in matters of history and doctrine. However limited may have been their knowledge, and however much they have erred when they were not writing sacred Scripture, the authors of Scripture, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, were preserved from making factual, historical, scientific, or other errors. The Bible does not purport to be a textbook of history, science, or mathematics; yet when the writers of Scripture spoke of matters embraced in these disciplines, they did not indite error; they wrote what was true ( Harold Lindsell, The Battle for the Bible, 1976, pages 30-31). -

About Emotions There are 8 primary emotions. You are born with these emotions wired into your brain. That wiring causes your body to react in certain ways and for you to have certain urges when the emotion arises. Here is a list of primary emotions: Eight Primary Emotions Anger: fury, outrage, wrath, irritability, hostility, resentment and violence. Sadness: grief, sorrow, gloom, melancholy, despair, loneliness, and depression. Fear: anxiety, apprehension, nervousness, dread, fright, and panic. Joy: enjoyment, happiness, relief, bliss, delight, pride, thrill, and ecstasy. Interest: acceptance, friendliness, trust, kindness, affection, love, and devotion. Surprise: shock, astonishment, amazement, astound, and wonder. Disgust: contempt, disdain, scorn, aversion, distaste, and revulsion. Shame: guilt, embarrassment, chagrin, remorse, regret, and contrition. All other emotions are made up by combining these basic 8 emotions. Sometimes we have secondary emotions, an emotional reaction to an emotion. We learn these. Some examples of these are: o Feeling shame when you get angry. o Feeling angry when you have a shame response (e.g., hurt feelings). o Feeling fear when you get angry (maybe you’ve been punished for anger). There are many more. These are NOT wired into our bodies and brains, but are learned from our families, our culture, and others. When you have a secondary emotion, the key is to figure out what the primary emotion, the feeling at the root of your reaction is, so that you can take an action that is most helpful. . -

Diana Smith Even as good things have also happened, this has been a hard year. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of not only those we love who have died. They’re heavy, too, with missing the faces, the touches, the hugs, the simple presence of so many of our friends, our family, those we care deeply about, and those we interact casually with. Some of us have lost jobs, are underemployed, or have loved ones experiencing financial difficulty. Some of us have lost homes, health, or ability. We experienced a major natural disaster, a derecho, and family members have been affected by other natural and unnatural disasters, fueled by climate change. We’ve gone through major life transitions without many of our people around us. And this Sunday we look toward Tuesday, an election day that will bring we know not what, but which weighs heavy in our hearts with fear, anxiety, waiting, wondering, and sometimes hope – no matter what we each hope the outcomes will be. An election day and week where we anticipate we may not receive prompt answers, where we wonder what will come of the uncertainty and many people’s responses to all this. We worry about the possibilities of upheaval and perhaps violence. Many of us worry about ourselves and other loves ones who have more marginalized identities and are vulnerable. There is an ancient practice of lament: writing a piece that expresses grief and loss. -

Jewish faithful from all over the world are coming to make their pilgrimage to the temple to make their sacrifices and pay their temple-tax. It probably all seems very practical and pragmatic to the Jewish out-of-town-ers. They’ll stop in the equivalent of the narthex area for all the necessary items for their sacrifices. -

JOYFUL BODIES, JOYFUL MINDS: GENDER EUPHORIA AMONG TRANSGENDER ADULTS LIVING IN CANADA by © Sam Tacit a thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Gender Studies, Department of Gender Studies Memorial University of Newfoundland June 2020 St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador Abstract Gender euphoria is a relatively recent term to describe positive experiences of transgender identity. There is very limited literature on this term and its implications, despite the impact it can have on positively affecting one’s self-esteem and pride. In this thesis I seek to understand how transgender adults living in Canada define and experience gender euphoria. 26 participants responded to an online survey that included a series of questions regarding their experiences with gender euphoria, and their definitions for the term. Their responses suggest that gender euphoria encompasses many emotional, psychological, and interpersonal factors. The participants described gender euphoria as a complex and emotion-driven experience, often brought about by both internal changes to one’s self-perception and the external validation of others. I’m a PhD student in psychology and I’ll be presenting some empirical qualitative work today on gender euphoria that I've done with Stephanie Gauvin and Sari van Anders What is Gender Dysphoria? ● The distress arising from conflicts between a person’s gender identity or expression and their assigned gender/sex (American Psychiatric Association, 2016) ● Physical body (Pulice-Farrow, Cusack, Galupo, 2019) ● Social gendered experiences (Galupo, Pulice-Farrow, Lindley, 2019) ● Often seen as a diagnostic term 2 I’ll start with a term that is probably familiar to many if not all of you, gender dysphoria, which is the distress arising from conflicts between a person’s gender identity or expression and their assigned gender/sex. Just a note that I use gender/sex as an umbrella term to indicate the entanglement of people’s social genders with their physical, bodily sexes, though not everyone experiences it this way. Research has demonstrated that gender dysphoria can be about sex or the physical body, as with feelings of discord between a person’s sex characteristics and their gender/sex identity, and it can also arise from social gendered experiences, such as people using the wrong pronouns or name for someone. -

ACEDIA: ENEMY OF SPIRITUAL JOY • Jean-Charles Nault • “Acedia drives man to turn his back on the situation of tribulation, which is that of the Christian living in the world without being of the world.” It is told that in the days of the desert Fathers, “one Saturday evening, the brothers were eating at the church of the Kellia. As they brought the soup to table, Abba Helladios the Alexandrine began to cry. Abba James said to him: “Why are you crying, abba?” He answered: “Because the joy of the soul has come to an end, that is, the joy of the fast, and now begins the satisfaction of the body.”1 The conception of joy particular to these spiritual masters of Egypt, living in the fourth and fifth centuries, perhaps makes us smile. Undoubtedly we do not have the same experience of their main preoccupation, summed up in a single, fundamental question: how is one to be saved? Such was the goal of their asceticism and the deepest aspiration of their hearts. Such was the source of their joy, but also of their tears. In this their insight revealed to them an intimidating obstacle towering on the path of salvation. Pain, Sadness, Aggression, and Joy: An Evolutionary Approach to Film Emotions TORBEN GRODAL Abstract: Based on film examples and evolutionary psychology, this article dis- cusses why viewers are fascinated not only with funny and pleasure-evoking films, but also with sad and disgust-evoking ones. This article argues that al- though the basic emotional mechanisms are made to avoid negative experi- ences and approach pleasant ones, a series of adaptations modify such mechanisms. Goal-setting in narratives implies that a certain amount of neg- ative experiences are gratifying challenges, and comic mechanisms make it possible to deal with negative social emotions such as shame. Innate adapta- tions make negative events fascinating because of the clear survival value, as when children are fascinated by stories about loss of parental attachment. Furthermore, it seems that the interest in tragic stories ending in death is an innate adaptation to reaffirm social attachment by the shared ritual of sad- ness, often linked to acceptance of group living and a tribal identity. Keywords: attachment, cognitive film theory, coping and emotions, evolution- ary psychology, hedonic valence, melodrama, sadness, tragedy Why are viewers attracted to films that contain many negative experiences and endings? It seems counterintuitive that tragic stories can compete for our attention with stories that have a more upbeat content. The basic mechanisms underlying our experience with pleasure and displeasure, which psychologists call positive and negative hedonic valence, would seem to lead us to prefer beneficial and fitness-enhancing experiences and to avoid violent confronta- tion with harmful experiences. We are drawn to tasty food and attractive part- ners and retreat from enemies or bad tasting food.
