(The latter phrasing, as will be recognized, is that of the young British soldier-poet Wilfred Owen, aged 25, himself killed in Flanders a week before the German surrender) Such poetic expressions of generational protest, written by contemporaries or by slightly older figures like Pound, comprise one of the great genres of the war, and are reflected as well in a larger history of survivorship writing, Anglo-European and American: Robert Graves’s Good Bye to all That, Vera Brittain’s Testament of Youth, Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front, Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. “You are all a lost generation:” Hemingway claimed to have gotten the famous line—used as an epigraph to his 1925 novel of war-ruined expatriates in Paris, The Sun Also Rises—from a conversation with Gertrude Stein, who in turn is said to have heard it originally it from a French garage-owner, complaining of the curious anomie of a young mechanic assistant who had survived the war. Thus in life and art alike, the experience of fighting and dying young became a signature motif of World War I on the western front and elsewhere, as did frequently also that of perhaps surviving the war but in the process returning home too physically or psychologically damaged to resume anything resembling the patterns of peacetime existence.

    RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS IN this paper it is proposed to speak not of the man, Vaughan Williams—besides, he speaks for himself, in the next article—but of his music, as faithfully as may be, simply from the sound of it Downloaded from and from the pages themselves. Much of the music is printed, but an important part of it is in manuscript. In this fact we stumble at once upon a peculiarity. This composer does not use opus-numbers, those useful dockets : he is not altogether sure in what order he has written things ; here http://ml.oxfordjournals.org/ and there a score has been lost or withdrawn. This is not careless- ness nor indecision ; for when we look at his scores, red pencilled for the conductor's guidance and heavily blue pencilled for omissions, when we count the number of times he has revised a work and re- member his curtailment by ten minutes of the London Symphony between two performances last year, we see that he considers the writing down to be a mere preliminary, subject in all cases to the test of performance; and that though what survives may have been at University of Connecticut on July 7, 2015 written in a certain year, it cannot therefore be said to bear a date, and an opus number would be in so far misleading. He had loved the fifth by Jeffrey Davis variation in Enigma and spent hours studying the full score. He had written to Elgar for lessons in orchestration, being politely rebuffed by Elgar’s wife who suggested Bantock instead. Page . 4 Despite this setback, Vaughan Williams had absorbed certain passages in Elgar’s music such that G they became part of himself. ‘Thou art calling me’ from Gerontius was the most significant of Toward the Unknown these influences, appearing in the finale of A Sea Symphony, the first movement of A London Region – The Sixth Symphony Symphony and in Easter from the Five Mystical Songs. A few years later after the death of his father he moved with his mother, who was a descendant of the potter Josiah Wedgwood and was also related to Charles Darwin, to Leith Hill Place in the Surrey Hills. After Charterhouse School he was a student at the Royal College of Music under Charles Villiers Stanford. He then read history and music at Trinity College, Cambridge, and on returning to the RCM studied composition with Hubert Parry, who became a friend. Another friendship made at the RCM was with Gustav Holst, whom he first met in 1895. Vaughan Williams is a central figure in British music at least in part because of his long career as teacher, lecturer and friend to many younger composers and conductors.     Vaughan-Williams (1872-1958) Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis\ The music of Vaughan-Williams is quite rightly recognized as extraordinary. Not only is it characteristically well crafted, but when it is not utterly spiritual and sublime, it is more often than not utterly gorgeous. Sometimes certain composers are associated with their native land to such an extent that you can see the landscape and taste the salt of the earth when you listen to their music. The profound impact of a discovered love of folk melody follows VW’s compositions in a permanent fashion. In the fen country and Norfolk Rhapsodies are testament to this English flavour in his music. From around about the same time in 1904 VW began his great work on the English Hymnal which brought him into conscious proximity with a wealth of Anglican Church tradition. This too, is never absent from his composition. Vaughan-Williams, perhaps even more so than Elgar proves to be quintessentially English, as much as Copland embodies Americana. By the time he wrote the Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis, he had inextricably linked the two together. Tallis had set to music the parts of a new Psalter, including the words of Psalm 2 – Verses 1 and 2. It was in Phrygian mode which is both elegant and evocative lending a cleanliness of spirit to Archbishop Parker’s new age Psalter. Matthew Parker was a founding father of Henry VIII’s protestant reform, along with Cranmer, Latimer and Ridely. He was also Anne Boleyn’s favourite churchman, and retained the favour of her daughter Elizabeth the new queen who appointed him archbishop in 1559.
