He has made major contributions to theoretical and experimental chemistry for over forty years. On April4.1992, tocoincidewith theAmericanchemicalsociety Meetinginsan Francisco, approximately 100 of his present and former students, colleagues, and friends held a scientific meeting at Stanford to honor the McConnells on Harden's 65th birthday. As part of the celebration, and with the encouragement of Mostafa El-Sayed, Editor, this issue of The Journal of Physical Chemistry was planned. A special issue of the Biophysical Journal is being published concurrently to present the more biological work of McConnell's former students and colleagues. These two publications provide a glimpse of the broad scope of activities and careers influenced by Harden McConnell, ranging from molecular quantum mechanics to immunology. McConnell was born on July 18, 1927, in Richmond, VA. He earned a B.S. degree in chemistry from George Washington University in 1947, and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the California Instituteof Technology in 1951 with Norman Davidson. After serving for two years as a National Research Fellow in physics at the University of Chicago with Robert S. Mulliken and John Platt, he held a position as research chemist at Shell Development Co. -

APPENDIX A WSU 2014-19 STRATEGIC PLAN Appendix A: WSU Strategic Plan 2014-15 Strategic Plan 2014-2019 President Elson S. Floyd, Ph.D. Strategic Plan 2014-2019 Introduction The 2014-19 strategic plan builds on the previous five-year plan, recognizing the core values and broad mission of Washington State University. Goals and strategies were developed to achieve significant progress toward WSU’s aspiration of becoming one of the nation’s leading land-grant universities, preeminent in research and discovery, teaching, and engagement. The plan emphasizes the institution’s unique role as an accessible, approachable research institution that provides opportunities to an especially broad array of students while serving Washington state’s broad portfolio of social and economic needs. While providing exceptional leadership in traditional land-grant disciplines, Washington State University adds value as an integrative partner for problem solving due to its innovative focus on applications and its breadth of program excellence. The plan explicitly recognizes the dramatic changes in public funding that have occurred over the duration of the previous strategic plan, along with the need for greater institutional nimbleness, openness, and entrepreneurial activity that diversifies the University’s funding portfolio. In addition, the plan reaffirms WSU’s land-grant mission by focusing greater attention system-wide on increasing access to educational opportunity, responding to the needs of Washington state through research, instruction, and outreach, and contributing to economic development and public policy. While the new plan retains the four key themes of the previous plan, its two central foci include offering a truly transformative educational experience to undergraduate and graduate students and accelerating the development of a preeminent research portfolio. -

Abstract: Papers of a theoretical chemical physicist, researcher, author, consultant, and professor of chemistry at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) from 1960 until his retirement in 1973. Mayer is best known for his work in statistical mechanics and the application of statistical mechanics to concepts of liquids and dense gases. His accomplishments include the writing of two important textbooks in the field, STATISTICAL MECHANICS (1940) and EQUILIBRIUM STATISTICAL MECHANICS (1968), as well as numerous papers and articles which stimulated scientific inquiry. Before coming to UCSD, Mayer taught at Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, and the University of Chicago. His first wife was the physicist Maria Goeppert Mayer (1906-1972), who shared the Nobel Prize for physics in 1963. Joseph Mayer married Margaret Griffin in 1972. Most of the materials in the collection date from 1946 to 1973, although some items, such as Mayer's college memorabilia, originate in earlier periods. Most important are the writings and correspondence. -

It is here argued that evolving disciplinary factors such as physical and chemical responses to the atomic hypothesis, the nature of disciplinary formation in Germany and the United States, the reception of quantum mechanics within physics and chemistry, and the application of quantum mechanics to the problem of chemical bonding by physicists and chemists, formed the chemical bond into a physico-chemical theory. In the late nineteenth-century context of early physical chemistry, the chemical bond was known as a physical link between atoms, which could not be studied by chemical means because of the lack of an adequate atomistic framework. Both chemists and physicists broadly accepted the atomistic hypothesis following the discovery of the electron at the turn of the twentieth century, which afforded theoretical study of chemical bonding. -
