*indicates part-time staff Dear Friends, The celebration of Holy Week and Easter this year was galva- nizing for me. Celebrating the mysteries of our salvation and mak- ing them our own, certainly does help us understand what it means to be “bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh,” in the risen Body of Christ. We are one in the risen Body of Christ. That is what the Easter experience is all about. It is in the relationship we have with Jesus and one another in Christ that we experience “He breathed the power of the Spirit which raised Jesus from on them the dead, giving wings and breath to our lives. and said, That has been the experience of Christians from the beginning, sharing the life of the resurrec- ‘Receive the tion received in Baptism when we died and rose Holy Spirit’.” with Christ. That is why we hear today of how the first Christians, being of one heart and mind, “not claiming their possessions as their own, but holding everything in Second Sunday common,” experienced great power bearing witness to the resur- rection of Jesus in their lives. There was no needy person among of Easter them, property was sold and distributed to each according to need. April 19, 2009 Talk about radical faith! It is possible because we are begotten, Who indeed is the victor progeny of God, as St. Paul tells us in the second reading, over the world “for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the but the one who believes victory that conquers the world is our faith.” that Jesus is the Son of God? Jesus, as we hear in the gospel, gave us the Spirit — the Spirit that raised him from the dead, sending us out on mission as his — 1 John 5:5 disciples. “As the Father has sent me, so I send you… He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’. We are called and sent to continue the mission and ministry of Jesus as his disciples. We are stewards of that trust and the gifts of the Holy Spirit we have been given. C.A.R.E. CORNER Today, on the second Sunday of the Easter sea- son, we meet our church’s namesake in the story we have all come to know as Jesus’ encounter with the doubting Thomas. This is the first time the risen Jesus appears to the disciples. And the first words out of Jesus’ mouth are “Peace be with you.” We will hear these words again in the weeks to come as our gospels continue to report more appearances of the Resurrected Jesus. Why did Jesus keep saying “peace be with you” when He appeared to His followers? And what did He mean by it? The idea of receiving Christ’s peace must have been an important one to the early Christian Church because 2000 years later, we still take the time to offer each other a “sign of peace” at every liturgy. Why do we do this, what does it mean, and why is it still important? Stay with us in the weeks to come as we explore the peace of Christ.

First Communion Weekend On April 25 during the 4:30 Mass; on April 26 during the 9:00 and 12:15 Mass; on May 2 at 1:00 and during the 4:30 Mass; and on May 3 during the 12:15 Mass, the children of our parish who have been preparing for Eucharist will be making their First Communion. In January these children and their families committed themselves to prepare for this begin- ning of their full participation in our liturgy. At that time, their names were put on the ban- ner that hangs in the Gathering Area of the Ministry Center. As they are finishing their work, we are asking the rest of our community of St. Thomas to keep these children in our prayers. It is important for them to know that our community supports and cares for them. We are including a list of the First Communicants and the Masses at which they will be participating. If you have neighbors or friends making their First Communion, you might want to attend the Mass at which they will be participating. In the generous spirit which has characterized St. Thomas, please make these children feel welcome and loved on this special weekend.
