Prairie View, Texas Margaret Carol Penn 1970 "Miss Prairie View"

As this night brings to an end my "Miss Prairie View" reign, I would like to express my most sincere gratitude to you, the students of Prairie View A&M College for making every day of this past year a memorable one. May each of your lives continue to be an abundance of gracious living.

Prairie View College has been busy opening many ave nues of learning and experience for its students. One of the most outstanding of these experiences is the opportunity for the young lady selected "Miss Prarie View" to compete in the "Miss Texas" Pageant, in Fort Worth. Both are preliminary competition for the "Miss America" Pageant, held annually in Atlantic City.

With only three weeks to prepare myself for the "Miss First Black to participate in the Texas" Pageant, I was a bit nervous and pushed for time. "Miss Texas" Pageant Yet, in the midst of this hurry, there was always time to think about the great group of sudents that I would be representing. To have become "Miss Texas" would have been an honor, indeed. But I found it as great an honor to display a type of beauty that was not often, if ever, seen in such fine competitions.

It was a first for me, a first for you, ... a first for Prairie View. Surely, this year's queen will find her title an asset to all the beautiful experiences befitting any queen.

Dean R. Bland Evans and Mrs. Iris Thomas were very generous with their time and effort in helping me with wardrobe selections. Many efforts were made by our institution in preparing their queen for further competitive involvement. I was given two of the best chaperones possible, Dr. Mattie Londow (for the state pageant) and Mrs. Delia Hunt (who traveled with me throughout the year).

Many thanks are extended to the staff of the "Miss Texas" Pageant, Inc. for inviting our institu tion to participate in this very glamourous competition for ideal young ladies in the state of Texas. A very personal "thank you" goes out to Mrs. Barbara O. Stewart and Mr. Edwin M. Bigsby for in spiration that has made my endeavors successful ones. And of course, eternal gratefulness for the grace of God and my mother, Mrs. Hattie Jones. "Miss Prairie View" Contestants 1970
