Junior a Tigers Down a Game to Rival Hurricanes This page was exported from - The Auroran Export date: Tue Sep 28 4:04:08 2021 / +0000 GMT Junior A Tigers down a game to rival Hurricanes By Jake Courtepatte The Hockey Gods have shone down on the fans of the Aurora Tigers and Newmarket Hurricanes, giving those in attendance three tight-knit, action-packed games so far that sees the Hurricanes lead the series 2 ? 1. Game One of the best-of-seven OJHL first round saw a whopping 110 shots split between the Yonge Street rivals in a quadruple overtime 3 - 2 Newmarket win last Thursday. Dimello Smith played the hero on his home rink five minutes into the seventh period of play, on the 65th shot directed at Aurora goaltender Lucas Durante's net. Jacob Ball and Tyler Davis each found the back of the net for Aurora. Newmarket's Adam Trotman told the OJHL the game reflects what should be a ?tough series.? ?We don't like them and they don't like us,? said Trotman. ?So, there is a lot of emotion in every goal scored, hit thrown, puck blocked, save made etc. As a team, we are just looking to do what we need to do to get the job done.? Aurora's Durante echoed Trotman's sentiments. ?We have re-found our scoring as of late and the boys are all in,? said Durante. ?I can see this series going seven games with every game being a one or two goal difference." Durante's words rang true in one sense in game two of the series, a matchup dry of offense in a 1 ? 0 goaltending battle. Fatigue was clearly not a factor for he or his Newmarket counterpart Mitchell Weeks, with the only goal of the game coming off the stick of Davis late in the first period. Durante's 21 saves were good enough to tie the series at a game apiece. Newmarket was back on the offensive for Sunday's game three, outshooting the Tigers 41 ? 19 in a 5 ? 3 game. A 2 ? 1 Newmarket lead heading into the final twenty minutes, the Hurricanes exploded for four goals in the third to skate away with the win. A pair of fresh faces scored their first goals in a Tigers uniform in Noah Tooke and Kyle Heitzner, while Rhys Forhan also pitched in for Aurora. OJHL analyst Joe Washkurak still sees the Tigers as a possibility to squeak out of the first round, despite losing leading scorer Joseph Mizzi to the professional ranks. ?They still have Ball, they still have Davis, they have some good players and can steal games. But if they can't wipe it clean, they're going to be in tough.? The Tigers held a thirteen-point lead atop the OJHL's North division in early December and finished the season third in the division: eleven back of the Markham Royals. ?They will have to rally around the other guys in the room,? said Washkurak. ?They'll have to rely on Durante a lot.? Game Four of the series went Wednesday evening following press time in Aurora, while Game Five will swing back to Newmarket for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop. If necessary, Game Six will return to the ACC on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., while Game Seven would go in Newmarket on Sunday. Many young goalies have early success but use incorrect techniques. As the competition improves, these techniques become habits and the goalie begins to fall behind and have less success. It is important to build good habits and strong skills into a youngster’s game. This will ensure that they continue to progress as they face stronger competition. The Fundamentals and Proper Technique 1. Skating and agility are crucial. If a goalie can’t move and recover efficiently, he or she will have a difficult time handling most game situations. 2. Keeping the shoulders down and “setting” for the shot is of great importance.

The first two phases will be a Skills Assessment of each player/goaltender to ensure the teams are balanced. Phase 3 will be a combination of Games and Practices. The program offered (Combine) is more than just a week-end of scrimmages. The Combine will provide the opportunity for each player to Learn, Develop, and interact with the actual Newmarket Staff. Therefore providing multiple development opportunities to display skills and ultimately have the chance to earn a roster spot to play for the Newmarket Hurricanes.     OATA President, Drew Laskoski, Trainer of the Year The Ontario Junior Hockey League today announced that Drew Laskoski of the Newmarket Hurricanes has been named the 2014-15 recipient of the OJHL Trainer-of-the-Year Award. The 52-year old Laskoski has spent the past 28 years plying his trade with York Region junior clubs, dating back to the 1985-86 season when he was the trainer for the Schomberg Cougars Junior 'C' club after graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo.     To whom this may concern, My name is Stefan von Engelbrechten and I am currently playing for the Stouffville Spirit Junior ‘A’ Hockey Club in the OJHL. My minor hockey coach, Phil Kestin, is hoping to advance himself to the next level of coaching and I believe my reference may help. Firstly, I would like to talk about my experience last year being a member of Phil Kestin’s Midget ‘AAA‘ Waxers team. Our team last year made it all the way to the OMHA Championships losing in double overtime. The results of our season were impressive but more important was how we got there. Coach Kestin took a group of guys who have never played together and taught them to work inside a system which benefited the team overall and not just individual talents. This helped us achieve a 60+ win season in which we held first place in our division by a wide margin. Starting in pre season camp many of us, who had played elite level minor hockey before, noticed something different about this team. There was a professionalism amongst the coaching staff and an intensity in training and practices that made us feel like this was another level of hockey altogether. Our team had strict schedules to keep on and off ice, weekly one-on-one video instruction and weekly off-ice conditioning training. Our team experienced a lot of success but despite this each week we would have a new set of goals and a new set of things to make us better. Coach Kestin didn’t want us becoming complacent leading up to the OMHA finals where he knew we would face elite teams.

The regular season champs clinched the title in spectacular fashion Friday night in a showdown between the best records in the OJHL, facing the Trenton Golden Hawks for the final road game of the season. Vince Figliomeni, stellar since moving to the Tigers from the Mississauga Chargers in early January, opened the scoring on the power play late in the first period. Cameron Morrison surpassed the 30-goal plateau in his rookie season by notching two in the second period to put the Tigers up 3 ? 0.
