A high level of technical competence is developed in our Visual Arts program. Our Drama program, offered in English and French features a variety of approaches that develop performance, learning and life skills. Health and Physical Education We offer health and physical education in Grades 9 through 12. The primary focus of our courses is to promote lifelong healthy active living. Participate in a wide range of enjoyable physical activities and field trips, golf, squash, curling, self-defence, orienteering, a visit to Sunnybrook & Women's College Health Sciences Centre and rock climbing. Computers and Technology The enthusiasm is real when your Java code works or the robot you designed and built comes to life. In communication technology you will be astonished by vectored graphics and Flash animation. The Kubrick, Spielberg or Cronenberg within you will come out when you get behind a camera. Digital photography is a dynamic course with a multimedia real world experience. Science Our science programs are interactive experiences. In biology, solve criminal investigations using genetics. Monitor your heart rate using an EKG and analyze your own DNA on a field trip to the Ontario Science Centre. Chemistry students are involved with titrations and explore chemical reactions. In physics, design roller coasters and mousetrap cars. We have a thriving sports program with something for everyone that competes with other schools. Our Leaside athletic association encourages and promotes student involvement in intramural events, school spirit and support for our sports teams. Our archery teams won first place in Ontario; our girls' softball team won the south region championships for seven years. Our rugby teams have travelled to Nashville and Scotland. Join one of our clubs, including yearbook, student newspaper, film, gaming, debating and volunteering (ACT). Our United Nations club took part in a United Nations conference at the University of Toronto. This fall Leaside hosted a G20 Youth Forum for 200 students across the GTA. Leaside Drama, Fashion Show and Battle of the Bands welcomes performers, stage crew, designers and others behind the scenes. Plan to take your learning to a higher level. Students have visited Italy, Greece, France, China, Japan, Egypt and Peru. Participate in exchange programs with schools in France. Make a difference in the lives of other students by advocating for solutions to bullying and violence. What Sets Us Apart Students have many opportunities to demonstrate their academic abilities at competitions throughout the school year. Our students won the gold medal at the Toronto Science Fair and the silver medal at the National Science Fair in Vancouver. Many students participate each year in the mathematics competition at the University of Waterloo. One of our French Immersion students won both the national and provincial championships in French public speaking. And our Reach for the Top Team came in first place at the provincial level for two years and in second and third place at the national level.
