To make them responsible citizens. PART -A PREAMBLE Kodagu, a small district in Karnataka, is known for its natural beauty. Its pristine glory is enriched by the blessings of Goddess Kavery and Lord Igguthappa. The district also figures on top in the areas of defense, education, sports, culture, and commercial crops. Cauvery college Gonikoppal, established in the year 1968, is a pioneer institution of Higher Learning in Kodagu. Its visionaries had dreamed of an institution that caters to the educational needs of rural areas of Kodagu. Their dreams are duly upheld through the various facets of success the college has made through its journey over these years making an impact in the field of education and even elsewhere. Though started with basic courses of BA, BSc, BCom- with the students strength of 90, today the college has ventured on the phenomenon of expansion introducing various courses like BBM and BCA in under graduation and MA in Economics and M.Com in post graduation. The college has a whopping strength of 1028 students, training and nurturing these young minds a total of 43 teaching and 30 non-teaching staff work relentlessly. The college has completed 47 fruitful years imparting quality higher education. The college is re-accredited with ‘A’ grade by NAAC. NAAC peer team appreciated our effort and guided us to perform well in all sphere of activities. To improve the NAAC grade in the coming years we have constituted the IQAC committee consisting of academicians from local society. Students of the Department of Economics participated in ECO-ZENITH ECO-FEST held at Puttur Philomena’s college on 17-02-2017 and won Runners up Trophy. 4. The department also invited Brahmakumaris from Madikeri & Mysore to advise the students on education , morality & personality development. 5. Department of Political Science was inaugurated by Justice Mohan Prabhu -sponsored by district legal authority. Mock parliament was organized by the students on 16th Jan 2017.Advocate Anupama Kishore gave a talk on Children’s Rights. 6. The department also organize Personality development programme on 29.09.2016. Counsellor SudhaVasanth was the Resource person.PPT presentation was arranged on World war -2 on 10.08.2016. The department organized Dr B.R Ambedkar Jnana Sampathabhiyana in collaboration with social welfare department, Karnataka Govt on 28.02.2017. 8. Department of Geography had organized guest lectures on Geomorphology by Prof. N Deveraju and on “Agricultural Products, Diseases and Marketing” by Dr. Shaju George. 9. History Association was inaugurated on 31-07-2016 by Rtd. Prof. BellathandaK.Appachu. 10. Orientation Programme was conducted by the department of history on 18-07-2016. 11. On 28-01-2017 118th Birth Anniversary of Field Marshall KM Cariappa. Mr. Rtd. SP. MukkatiraChotuAppaiah enlightened the students with topic “Life and Achievements of KM.Cariappa”. 12. Department of Kannada had organized a special lectures for final optional students on Indian Literature and Criticisms by Dr. P S Prabhu. The optional students and staff visited ArameriKalancheri Matt as part of their study tour. 13. Department of English had organized students seminar on Romantic Literature. Department of Hindi celebrated Hindi Day on 14th September 2016 and had organized a guest lecture to mark the occasion. The department arranged a class seminars, quiz competition & Elocution Competition for students 15. Departments of Commerce and Management together organized District level CA/CS/ ICWA orientation programme by Mr. Anshuman A S on 9thAugust 2016. A guest lecture by AkashDube on “How to face Banking Exams” was organized on 6th August 2016. 16. Students of BBA had organized new product development activity. A PPT presentation by final B.Com students on “GST” was exhibited. 17. Commerce and Administration departments collaborated and have successfully conducted a Commerce and Management Fest “SIRUS” on 31st Jan 2017. 18. Department of Mathematics conducted Students seminars in January 2017. The students were taken on a visit to vismaya park on 21st January 2017. Nagaraja Department of Environmental Science, Bangalore University, Bangalore – 560056 Email: *pramodgowdagmail.com, **[email protected] Abstract The present study is focused on RS and GIS based assessment of forest encroachment in Kodagu district of Karnataka for the year 1990, 2000 and 2010 using Landsat TM/MSS for 1990 and 2000, and IRS LISS III for the year 2010. It’s located in the south-western part of Karnataka state, geographically stretched between 110 56' to120 52’ N and 750 22’ to760 12’ E, with a total area of 4101.21 Km2. The study revealed that the encroachment in reserve forest area accounts for 291.6 ha, 284.8 ha and 173.7 ha respectively for the year, 2010, 2000 and 1990. The highest encroachment is being noticed in Somavarpet, Kushalnagar ranges in Madikeri division and major encroachment is witnessed moist and dry deciduous, other plantation and mixed forest plantation.
