TILIFHON1 CIRCLI B-8SOO FOR RELEASE: November 3, 1958 v* f IC 9 UNITED STATES ROOM OPENS AT UNESCO HEADQUARTERS, PARIS, NOVEMBER 3, 1958 The Executive Board and committee Room designed by the leading American architect Philip C. Johnson as a United States contribution to the UNESCO Headquarters build­ ing in Paris will be inaugurated on November 3 when the building is dedicated. At the request of the United States Department of State the room was commissioned by the International Council at The Museum of Modern Art, a private organization of art patrons. It is one of eight rooms designed by member nations of UNESCO at the invitation of the Director-General. The other countries are Denmark, the Feder­ al Republic of Germany, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. The United States room at the UNESCO Headquarters is for meetings of the Exec­ utive Board and other important committees. The seating plan is flexible, with several possible arrangments for different kinds of programs, and provides for at least 190 persons. It is windowless, 45 by 75 feet, trapezoidal, with a sloping ceiling lk feet high at the entrance and 20 feet high at the opposite end. Three walls are covered with a deep rich bronze-green velvet. The fourth is a sloping, undulating concrete wall, part of the exterior of the building and incorporated in the design of the room. These elements - velvet and concrete - receive further dramatic contrast from the white floor and white ceiling. Outstanding decorative elements are k6 grill-work wood panels painted white, about 7 feet high, which are fastened to poles standing in front of the green velvet walls. An elliptical conference table with a white vellum leather top is in the cen^ ter of the room. Eighty-one lighting fixtures suspend from the sloping ceiling fol­ lowing the elliptical line of the table. Translation booths are set into one of the green velvet walls enclosed behind glass panels. When the invitation to decorate and furnish a room was tendered to the United States, the State Department consulted the United States National Committee for UNESCO, an organization whose members are appointed by the State Department. One of its members, also a Director of the International Council at The Museum of Modern Ac\ feftt Henry Potter Russell of San Francisco, brought this to the attention of the 'International Council. This organization agreed to assume the responsibility of carrying out this pro^ct. The nineteen donors to the room include the Avalon Foundation, General Maurice Hirsch, Mrs. Frederick W. GODDESSES, PRIESTESSES, QUEENS AND DANCERS: IMAGES OF WOMEN ON SASANIAN SILVER Mary Olson Honors Thesis Spring 2008 April 23, 2008 1 GoDDESSES, PRIESTESSES, QUEENS AND DANCERS: IMAGES OF WOMEN ON SASANIAN SILVER Slowly, through ancient trade and diplomacy, modem imperialism, and the dubious trade in antiquities, a silver vase made its way from a silversmith in late antique Persia to, of all places, Cleveland, Ohio. After its discovery in the 1800s, the vase remained in the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad until eventually making its way to the United States. The imagery boasts a Persian origin; four female figures are illustrated in motion, elegantly holding an object in each hand. Not just Persian, more specifically the figures emerged from Sasanian Iran. The Sasanian Empire spanned from 224-651 CE and covered what is modern day Iran and spread from the Greco-Roman west to India and China in the East.

    Chauncey Jerome Hamlin (1881–1963) President of ICOM (1946-1953) ICOM, which has retained its original English acronym for half a century, was the brainchild of an American, Chauncey J. Hamlin, President of the Trustees of the Science Museum in Buffalo. This is how Hamlin remembered the circumstances in which the adventure began: "In 1945, when I met Georges Salles, who was then Director of French museums, I suggested to him that we set up an International Council of Museums. He was immediately enthusiastic and agreed to sign a circular inviting the world's most eminent museologists to an international meeting at the Louvre in November 1946. His backing helped me to secure the support of the Director of the British Museum in London." Chauncey J. Hamlin, founder and first President of ICOM was born in 1881 in Buffalo (USA). In 1912, he campaigned for the presidential candidate Theodore Roosevelt. Mobilised during the Great War he fought at Verdun (France). When he returned to the U.S., he was appointed Vice-President of the Buffalo Society of Natural Science and became its President in 1920 until 1948. His interest in museum activities led him to become President of The American Museum Association from 1923 to 1929. Throughout his lifetime Hamlin had a keen interest in music (he was President of the Buffalo Chamber Music Society and Director of the town's Philharmonic Society). Interestingly and coincidentally G.H. Rivière, who was to be his first collaborator at the head of ICOM, also had a well-known passion for music and was a gifted pianist.

    Musée Picasso Paris / Labex CAP PROFIL DE POSTE Picasso et le Louvre Contexte Le Musée national Picasso-Paris et le Musée du Louvre sont engagés dans un partenariat visant à l’organisation d’une exposition « Picasso et le Louvre » à horizon 2019-2020 et à la publication d’un ouvrage consacré à cette question. Initié en octobre 2015 par l’accrochage de quatre peintures de Picasso au sein des collections de peintures du Musée du Louvre, ce projet comporte aujourd’hui deux volets. Le premier concerne l’histoire institutionnelle des relations entre Picasso et le Louvre, et le second la manière dont le Musée du Louvre vient nourrir le processus créatif picassien. Cette recherche viendra ainsi compléter le travail mené en 2016-2017 par Colette Morel, boursière Immersion du LabEx C.A.P. sur les expositions consacrées à Pablo Picasso de 1900 à 1973. Cette recherche a en effet mis en lumière la tenue de deux expositions d’œuvres de Pablo Picasso au Louvre. En 1947, sont présentées aux conservateurs réunis en comité d’acquisition dans la Salle des Sept cheminées les dix peintures que Picasso proposent en don à l’État. En 1971, le musée du Louvre rend hommage à Picasso pour son quatre-vingt-dixième anniversaire en exposant un ensemble de peintures au public dans la Grande Galerie. Ces deux événements, liés à des personnalités telles que Georges Salles ou Jean Cassou, impliquent de mener une recherche plus approfondie sur les relations qu’a pu entretenir Picasso avec le Musée du Louvre. D’autre part, les recherches menées par exemple par Pierre Rouillard (directeur émérite de recherche, CNRS), Hélène Le Meaux (conservatrice, département des Antiquités Orientales, Musée du Louvre), Pascale Picard (conservatrice du patrimoine) ou Harald Theil (historien de l’art) ont permis de préciser récemment1 certains points de ce que les proches de Picasso et ses biographes ont toujours souligné : l’importance du Musée du Louvre, musée « universel », « musée-monde » pour la création de Picasso.

    NATIONAL MUSEUM of ASIAN ART Smithsonian 0 Fr Galtr ofAr /&rthu, M, Sa(k/trGolftry David David‐Weill (known as David Weill to 1929) 1871–1952 Collector, Philanthropist Born in San Francisco, California, to French parents, David Weill—as he was then known—relocated with his parents to Paris, France, shortly after his bar mitzvah. In Paris, he attended secondary school at the prestigious Lycée Condorcet. While in school, David Weill began collecting eighteenth‐century French art, first purchasing a painting by the neoclassical painter Marie‐Gabrielle Capet. Upon graduating, he completed his required service in the French military and then entered the family banking business of Lazard Frères, which was headquartered in Paris with offices in New York and London. In 1897, David Weill married Flora Raphäel and built an elaborate mansion in the bucolic town of Neuilly, France. The couple welcomed seven children over the course of their fifty‐five‐year marriage. In keeping with the aristocratic fashions of the 1920s, David Weill legally changed his family’s surname in 1929 to David‐Weill. David‐Weill and his wife supported numerous philanthropic causes, including the construction of affordable housing, sanatoriums, and free medical clinics in Paris and beyond. He supported extensively l’Université de Paris, funding scholarships, campus construction projects, and opportunities for students to study abroad. His philanthropy extended to several museums and libraries, including the Bibliothèque National de France, where he paid for the institution to duplicate the card catalogue from the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, thereby providing French researchers with knowledge of the Washington repository.

    Architecture and the Fine Arts JAMES HUMPHRY I11 “INALL ABUNDANCE there is lack.” Hippocrates’ words, written many centuries ago, describe the general situation with respect to the “abundance”-the great plethora of book production in all fields, including architecture and the fine arts. Bibliographical control of the ever-increasing quantity of materials in these fields can provide the solution for the “lack.” The extent to which one can find his way to the information he seeks, by means of bibliography, is the subject of this article. The large number of books published each year in the fine arts is a relatively recent phenomenon, UNESCO’s publication Courier cites the total annual world production of book titles as 360,000 in 1960, compared to 400,000 in 1963.l In the field of fine and applied arts, book title output in the United States was 906 in 1964, of which 776 were new books and 130 new editions. This represents a net increase of 10 percent over similar figures for 1963, when 822 titles were pro- duced; 664 were new books, and 158 new editiom2 Titles in the field of art imported from foreign countries in 1964 to- talled 388, representing 358 new books and 30 new edition^.^ In 1963 the total was 13g3 as compared to 101 in 196L4 Prices for art books and periodical publications have increased steadily during the past few years. 'Hence the object can produce meaning, possess a power of representation and act upon cognitive processes. More than meeting material and technical needs, the object signifies complex values, marks the identities of individuals and groups and evokes abstract ideas intended to fuel thought'2 In the spring of 1937, a chronicler with the Revue de l’art ancien et moderne was musing over René Gimpel’s (figure 1)* latest acquisition: 'At the Gimpel Gallery on the Place Vendôme, a portrait of a seventeenth-century man [;] is it a self-portrait by Poussin?'3 A few months later, in his Parisian gallery, the art dealer opened a monograph exhibition dedicated to just this one painting, to enhance its unique character. This temporary exhibition-event soon dispelled the equivocal echoes reported in the capital’s press. Under the explicit title A masterpiece recovered.
