    The 39th Annual Heritage Days October 12-14 Heritage Days will celebrate its 39th anniversary on October 12, 13, and 14, 2018, in Historic downtown Rogersville, Tennessee. Grand Presenters of this year’s celebration include The Town of Rogersville, US Bank, TVA – John Sevier Combine, Ballad Health – Hawkins County Memorial Hospital, The Rogersville Review, Promise Medical Group and the Tennessee Arts Commission. Please stop by the grand presenter booths on Main Street to look at the informational displays and say thanks to these contributors. This year, Holston Electric Cooperative will sponsor the Art and Photography Show and Hawkins County Gas Utility will sponsor the Quilt Show. The Art and Photography Show offers categories for children, youth and adults. Seven categories of art will be judged, including paintings, drawings, sculpture, needlework, photographs, enhanced photographs, and other three dimensional art. The Art Show will be exhibited in the community room of US Bank on Main Street. The Quilt Show entries will be exhibited in the Hawkins County Courthouse on Main Street. The First Community Bank Great Chili Cook-off, will be held in conjunction with the Cruise-In on Friday evening. This tasty contest of local cooks and characters will be held in the courtyard of the Hale Springs Inn on Main Street on Friday, October 12. As you all know, we were unable to hold our 2020 Tennessee Division Reunion in Greeneville, TN due to restrictions in place because of Covid-19. The members of John Hunt Morgan, Camp 2053, who had worked tirelessly to make the weekend of August 21 and 22 a success, and put together a great Reunion at the General Morgan Inn. Sadly, three weeks before the Reunion word was received that we would need an alternative. Thank you to Tim Massey and all the members of Camp 2053, and we hope to hold our Reunion in Greeneville in the near future.

    Main Street - Town Square Founder Joseph Rogers deeded the four grassy corners at the intersection of Main and Depot Streets to the town. The squares have remained virtually intact since 1787. 100 West Main, Farmers Hotel, 1847 – Built by Absolom Kyle who owned a passenger and mail stagecoach line between Knoxville and Blountville. He also owned an interest in a stagecoach line that ran from Washington D.C. to Atlanta, GA. In 1908, Dr. Jacob Miller converted the hotel building into a hospital and sanatorium. 104 West Main, Wax - Watterson House, 1822 - Jacob Wax whose father, Henry Wax, Sr. had emigrated from Germany, build this log house and lived here until 1841 when he sold the property to Absolom Kyle. The original logs are covered with siding. Hawkins County Courthouse, 1836 – The oldest original courthouse still in use in Tennessee. The architect, prominent local builder John Dameron, probably based his design on Thomas Jefferson’s plans for the Botetourt County (VA) courthouse. In 1842, he designed and built a new courthouse for Knox County, TN. Masonic Temple, c.1845 - Overton Lodge #5 Free and Accepted Masons – Home of the oldest Masonic Lodge in continuous operation in Tennessee. The chapter was chartered in 1805 and named after Andrew Jackson’s law partner, John Overton. The building was built in 1839 as the first branch of the Bank of the State of Tennessee. Overton Lodge purchased the building in 1873. South Depot Street 415 South Depot Street, Southern Depot, 1893 - The Depot marked the end of the line for trains from Bulls Gap.

    SESAH NEWSLETTER Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians Volume 22 Number 3 Summer 2005 PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Fellow SESAH Members, Greetings from the Valley of Virginia where summer finally seems to have arrived. School is out, grades are done and our attention turns now to the October Meeting in Fort Worth. As you know from our previous newsletter, Jay Henry, the organizer of that meeting, died tragically in a freak accident this spring, but his colleagues in Texas, especially, his dean, Don Gatzke, and your SESAH officers have taken over the planning and we think we have a great meeting in store. Jay had worked out the general plan, we are just filling in the details. Elsewhere in this newsletter you will see the schedule and registration information as well as the list of sessions and papers. One glance is going to be enough to tell you that this will be a fascinating meeting. We have fifty-five papers in eighteen sessions on topics that range from the ancient to the modern and methodologies that look at both high style and vernacular. We have tours of Fort Worth and Dallas that focus on contemporary building and include such architectural stars as Edward Larrabee Barnes, Renzo Piano, Phillip Johnson, Tadao Ando, and Louis Kahn as well as some very interesting local people. We also have a special keynote speaker, Prof. Sarah Goldhagen of Harvard, author of Louis Kahn’s Situated Modernism who will be speaking at the Kimbell Art Museum, one of Kahn’s great buildings. So plan to join us for an exciting meeting.
