Monday, September 14 -“Water” The year is 1938, and Mahatma Gandhi's groundbreaking philosophies are sweeping across India, but 8-year-old Chuyia (Sarala), newly widowed, must go to live with other outcast widows on an ashram. Her presence transforms the ashram as she befriends two of her compatriots (Seema Biswas, Lisa Ray). Water is a 2005 Indo-Canadian film written and directed by Deepa Mehta, with screenplay by Anurag Kashyap. It is set in 1938 and explores the lives of widows at an ashram in Varanasi, India. “Water” is a dark introspect into the tales of rural Indian widows in the 1940s and covers controversial subjects such as misogyny and ostracism. (2005) 114 minutes PG-13

Monday, October 12 - “Dreams of Sushi” JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI is the story of 85- year-old Jiro Ono, considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. He is the proprietor of Sukiyabashi Jiro, a 10-seat, sushi-only restaurant inauspiciously located in a Tokyo subway station. Despite its humble appearances, it is the first restaurant of its kind to be awarded a prestigious three-star Michelin Guide rating, and sushi lovers from around the globe make repeated pilgrimages, calling months in advance and shelling out top dollar for a coveted seat at Jiro’s sushi bar. (2011) 81 minutes PG

Monday, November 9 - “Bernie” is a 2011 black comedy film directed by Richard Linklater, and written by Linklater and Skip Hollandsworth. The film stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey. It is based on a 1998Texas Monthly magazine article by Hollandsworth, "Midnight in the Garden of East ” that chronicles the 1996 murder of 81-year-old millionaire Marjorie Nugent in Carthage, Texas by her 38-year-old companion Bernhardt "Bernie" Tiede. Tiede proved so highly regarded in Carthage that, in spite of having confessed to the police, the district attorney was eventually forced to request a rare prosecutorial change of venue in order to secure a fair trial. ( 2011) 99 minutes PG-13

Monday, December 14 - “One Hundred Foot Journey” In "The Hundred-Foot Journey," Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant - the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. (2014) 122 Minutes PG

6 West Lafayette Public Library receives grant to celebrate 500 Years of Latino American History

Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, produced by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA), is a nationwide public programming initiative that supports the exploration of the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos, who have helped shape the United States over the last five centuries and who have become, with more than 50 million people, the country's largest minority group.

More than 200 grantees around the country —libraries, museums, state humanities councils, historical societies and other nonprofits selected through a competitive application process —are receiving funding, resources and support to host festivals, collect oral histories, facilitate informed discussions and hold other public events about Latino American history and culture between July 1, 2015, and July 1, 2016. All grantees will also host scholar-led viewing and discussion events that feature the documentary film "Latino Americans," supported by an NEH grant and created for PBS by the WETA public television station.

The West Lafayette Public Library was one of only 5 organizations in Indiana to be awarded this grant. WALLA is a supporting organization for the grant as well and we encourage your participation in the programs. Congratulations to West Lafayette Public Library on receiving this grant.

The cornerstone of the project is the six-part documentary film “Latino Americans,” created for PBS in 2013 by the WETA public television station and supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The award- winning series chronicles Latinos in the United States from the 16th century to present day. (Learn more about the series at www.pbs.org/latino- americans/en/.) The Library will be working with the Dr. Aurelio Curbelo, the Director of the Latino Cultural Center at Purdue to host a free, four-part viewing of the series, as well as a discussion panel with prominent Latino faculty. The series will be screened at the Purdue Graduate Student Center, in room PGSC 105 A&B at 6pm, on four Thursdays, September 24th, October 22nd, November 19th, and December 3rd.

The Library will also be hosting other events as part of the series, please check the Library webpage (westlafayettepubliclibrary.org) for more information on these events, as they become available.

Please call (765-743-2261) or e-mail ([email protected]) Erica Brown at the Library for more information.
