FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11/24/15 http://twitter.com/nfl345 WEEK 12 KICKS OFF WITH THANKSGIVING TRIPLEHEADER The NFL enters Week 12 and the action begins with a tripleheader on Thanksgiving Day. Among the teams in action on the holiday are the Carolina Panthers, who improved to 10-0 for the first time in franchise history with a 44-16 win over Washington. The Panthers will join the 2011 Green Bay Packers (10-0) as the only teams in the Super Bowl era to play on Thanksgiving Day with a 10-0 record or better. Carolina and the New England Patriots, who defeated Buffalo 20-13 on Monday night, are both 10-0, marking just the fourth time in NFL history there have been multiple 10-0 teams in a season (1934, 1990, 2009). Entering 2015, 15 teams started a season 10-0 during the Super Bowl era. Of those 15 clubs, all 15 qualified for the playoffs, nine advanced to the Super Bowl and six of those teams won the Super Bowl. “It feels great to be 10-0,” says Panthers quarterback CAM NEWTON, who tied a franchise record with five touchdowns in the win over Washington. “It was a great team win. But we have a short week and we’ve got to get ready for Dallas.” Week 12 kicks off on Thursday with a Thanksgiving tripleheader for the 10th consecutive year. Traditional competitors Detroit and Dallas will host games during the day followed by a primetime nightcap on NBC. The week continues with a full slate of games on Sunday and concludes on Monday night when the Cleveland Browns host the Baltimore Ravens (ESPN, 8:30 PM ET). The three Thanksgiving games and some of the other key contests in Week 12: PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (4-6) at DETROIT LIONS (3-7) (Thursday, FOX, 12:30 PM ET) The Eagles will play on Thanksgiving for the second consecutive year. Last Thanksgiving, Philadelphia quarterback MARK SANCHEZ rushed for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver JORDAN MATTHEWS as the Eagles won at Dallas 33-10. For the Eagles, this will be the team’s first Thanksgiving game at Detroit since November 28, 1968 when Philadelphia shutout the Lions 12-0. “We’re moving on and getting ready to play Detroit,” says Eagles head coach CHIP KELLY. “I think we have a really good football team and I’m very confident in these football players.” Detroit will play its 76th Thanksgiving Day game and are seeking their third consecutive win on the holiday. Lions wide receiver CALVIN JOHNSON has eight receiving touchdowns on Thanksgiving – the most in NFL history – and aims for his seventh consecutive game on the holiday with a TD. Detroit quarterback MATTHEW STAFFORD has passed for 1,161 yards (387 per game) in his past three Thanksgiving games and aims for his fourth consecutive 300-yard game on the holiday. CAROLINA PANTHERS (10-0) at DALLAS COWBOYS (3-7) (Thursday, CBS, 4:30 PM ET) In a season of firsts for the franchise, the Panthers, who are 10-0 for the first-time ever, will play their first Thanksgiving Day game. Carolina quarterback CAM NEWTON threw a career-high five touchdown passes last week, tying the single-game team record. Newton, who has 102 passing touchdowns and 39 rushing touchdowns, is the only player in NFL history with at least 100 passing touchdowns and 25 rushing touchdowns in his first five seasons. “It’s an honor to get to play on Thanksgiving,” says Newton. The Cowboys are 29-17-1 on Thanksgiving and have won six of their past nine on the holiday. Dallas quarterback TONY ROMO, who returned last week to lead the Cowboys to a 24-14 win at Miami, is 4-0 in his career against Carolina and 6-2 as the starter on Thanksgiving. Romo, who is 3-0 as the starting quarterback this season, connected with wide receiver DEZ BRYANT on the pair’s 50th career touchdown pass last week, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famers TROY AIKMAN and MICHAEL IRVIN for the most by a QB-WR duo in team history. CHICAGO BEARS (4-6) at GREEN BAY PACKERS (7-3) (Thursday, NBC, 8:30 PM ET) The Bears will play their 34th Thanksgiving game and second in a row. Last Thanksgiving, Chicago quarterback JAY CUTLER threw two touchdown passes to wide receiver ALSHON JEFFERY and tight end MARTELLUS BENNETT had eight catches for 109 yards. Rookie running back JEREMY LANGFORD will play his first Thanksgiving game and has scored five touchdowns in his past five games. The Packers will host their first Thanksgiving Day game since 1923, when the team defeated the Hammond Pros 19-0. Green Bay quarterback AARON RODGERS has 14 touchdowns, two interceptions and a 112.4 passer rating in seven career games on Thursday. In his past three starts against the Bears, Rodgers has 13 touchdowns, no interceptions and a 146.7 passer rating. The Packers won at Minnesota in Week 11 to improve to 7-3 and move back into a tie with the Vikings for first place in the NFC North. “That was a real good team win,” says Green Bay head coach MIKE MC CARTHY. “I feel good about the way we played in all three phases. We’ve still got things to improve on and we’ve got to turn around quickly and get ready for Chicago.” MINNESOTA VIKINGS (7-3) at ATLANTA FALCONS (6-4) (Sunday, FOX, 1:00 PM ET) The Vikings and Falcons enter Week 12 currently in playoff position. Both teams will try and bounce back from a loss in Week 11. Minnesota running back ADRIAN PETERSON rushed for a touchdown last week, his third consecutive game with a rushing score. Peterson has 92 career rushing touchdowns and moved into sole possession of 10th place on the NFL’s all-time list, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famers JEROME BETTIS and FRANCO HARRIS (91). Atlanta currently has the top two players in yards from scrimmage this season in wide receiver JULIO JONES (1,189 yards) and running back DEVONTA FREEMAN (1,184). Jones, who had nine catches for 160 yards last week, leads the league with 89 catches, tied with MARVIN HARRISON (2002) for the most receptions in a team’s first 10 games in NFL history. “We just have to keep working,” says Jones. “We’re still in it. We need to get on a roll.” TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (5-5) at INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (5-5) (Sunday, FOX, 1:00 PM ET) The Buccaneers have climbed into the postseason picture and aim for their third consecutive win. Last week, Tampa Bay became the first team in NFL history to have a quarterback (JAMEIS WINSTON) pass for at least five touchdowns and a running back (DOUG MARTIN) rush for at least 200 yards in a road game. Winston became the second rookie quarterback in NFL history to have five touchdown passes and no interceptions in a game (RAY BUIVID, December 5, 1937) and Martin recorded his second career 200-yard rushing game. “Anybody that knows football can see there’s a bright future here,” says Tampa Bay head coach LOVIE SMITH. “We feel like we’re a good football team right now. There’s a lot of football left to go. All of our goals we set at the start of the season are there for us. That is taking it one game at a time. Three wins in a row is what we’re trying to get done this week.” Colts quarterback MATT HASSELBECK, who turned 40 earlier this year, improved to 3-0 as the team’s starter and joined Pro Football Hall of Famer WARREN MOON (four) and BRETT FAVRE (four) as the only quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era to win at least three consecutive starts after their 40th birthday. Indianapolis has now won two games in a row and are tied with Houston for first place in the AFC South. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (10-0) at DENVER BRONCOS (8-2) (Sunday, NBC, 8:30 PM ET) On Sunday night, New England and Denver – AFC rivals and division leaders – meet in primetime. The Patriots are 10-0 for the second time in franchise history (2007). On Monday night, New England defeated Buffalo 20-13 as running back JAMES WHITE rushed for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass from quarterback TOM BRADY. Brady reached 25 touchdown passes in a season for the 11th time, tied with BRETT FAVRE for the second-most seasons in NFL history (PEYTON MANNING, 16). The Broncos are 8-2 and lead the AFC West. Last week in Chicago, quarterback BROCK OSWEILER completed 20 of 27 passes (74.1 percent) for 250 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 127.1 passer rating in the Broncos’ 17-15 win over the Bears. Osweiler, who turned 25 years old on Sunday, is the only quarterback in the Super Bowl era to make his first career start and win on his birthday. “Winning tastes great,” says Denver linebacker VON MILLER. “Nothing tastes like it.     Building a Champion: 1920 Akron Pros Ken Crippen BUILDING A CHAMPION: 1920 AKRON PROS By Ken Crippen It’s time to dig deep into the archives to talk about the first National Football League (NFL) champion. In fact, the 1920 Akron Pros were champions before the NFL was called the NFL. In 1920, the American Professional Football Association was formed and started play. Currently, fourteen teams are included in the league standings, but it is unclear as to how many were official members of the Association. Different from today’s game, the champion was not determined on the field, but during a vote at a league meeting. Championship games did not start until 1932. Also, there were no set schedules. Teams could extend their season in order to try and gain wins to influence voting the following spring. These late-season games were usually against lesser opponents in order to pad their win totals. To discuss the Akron Pros, we must first travel back to the century’s first decade. Starting in 1908 as the semi-pro Akron Indians, the team immediately took the city championship and stayed as consistently one of the best teams in the area. In 1912, “Peggy” Parratt was brought in to coach the team. George Watson “Peggy” Parratt was a three-time All-Ohio football player for Case Western University. While in college, he played professionally for the 1905 Shelby Blues under the name “Jimmy Murphy,” in order to preserve his amateur status. It only lasted a few weeks until local reporters discovered that it was Parratt on the field for the Blues.

    THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 5, No. 3 (1983) THE ROCK ISLAND INDEPENDENTS By Bob Braunwart & Bob Carroll On an October Sunday afternoon in 1921, the Chicago Cardinals held a 7-0 lead after the first quarter at Normal Park on the strength of Paddy Driscoll's 75-year punt return for a touchdown and his subsequent extra point. If there was a downside for the 4,000 assembled Cardinal fans, it was the lackluster performance of the visitors from across state--The Rock Island Independents. But the Independents were not dead. As a matter of fact, their second quarter was to be quite exciting--and certainly one of the most important sessions in the life of their young halfback, Jim Conzelman. It would be nice if we only knew in what order the three crucial events of that second quarter occurred, but newspaper accounts are unclear and personal recollections are vague. Certain it is that the Islanders ruched the ball down the field to the Chicago five. At that point, Quarterback Sid Nichols lofted a short pass to Conzelman in the end zone. After Jim tied the score with a nice kick, the teams lined up to start all over. At the kickoff, Conzelman was down the field like a shot--the Cardinals were to insist he was offsides. Before any Chicagoan could lay hand on the ball, Jim grasped it and zipped unmolested across the goal line. Another kick brought the score to 14-7, as it was to remain through the second half. The third event of that fateful second quarter was the most unusual, but whether it happened before Conzelman's heroics to inspire him or after them to reward him is something we'll probably never know.

    CHAPTER EIGHT PRO FOOTBALL’S EARLY YEARS Then all of a sudden this team was playing to 6,000–8,000 people. I personally think that the Oorang Indians, the Canton Bulldogs, and the Massillon Tigers were three teams that probably introduced people to pro football. — Robert Whitman. Professional football got its start long after pro baseball, and for many years was largely ignored by the general public. Prior to 1915, when Jim Thorpe signed with the Canton Bulldogs, there was little money in the game. The players earned less than was paid, under the table, to some allegedly amateur players on success- ful college teams. Jim Thorpe, 1920s jim thorpe association Things changed when Thorpe entered the pro game. Jack Cusack, the manager of the Canton Bulldogs, recalled: “I hit the jackpot by signing the famous Jim Thorpe … some of my business ‘advisers’ frankly predicted that I was leading the Bulldogs into bankruptcy by paying Jim the enormous sum of $250 a game, but the deal paid off even beyond my greatest expectations. Jim was an attraction as well as a player. Whereas our paid attendance averaged about 1,200 before we took him on, we filled the Massil- lon and Canton parks for the next two games — 6,000 for the first and 8,000 for the second. All the fans wanted to see the big Indian in action. On the field, Jim was a fierce competitor, absolutely fearless. Off the field, he was a lovable fellow, big-hearted and with a good sense of humor.” Unlike Thorpe’s experience in professional baseball, he was fully utilized on the gridiron as a running back, kicker, and fierce defensive player.

    NFL TO CELEBRATE ITS ‘ORIGINAL TOWNS’ AS PART OF NFL100 Members of communities with inaugural season teams to announce picks for the 2019 NFL Draft from live hometown events NFL to honor legacy of first-ever NFL game by donating turf to Dayton, Ohio PHOENIX, AZ: Nearly 100 years after the National Football League was born in Canton, Ohio, the NFL is celebrating the 13 communities that were home to the 14 teams of its inaugural season. Eight “Original Towns” outside of the 32 current NFL markets will host live telecasts in their hometowns to announce picks on Day 3 of the Draft: Akron, Ohio; Canton, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; Dayton, Ohio; Hammond, Indiana; Muncie, Indiana; Rochester, New York; and Rock Island, Illinois. The hometown celebrations in these markets will showcase the town’s history alongside fans, NFL legends, celebrities, and elected officials. For the fifth consecutive year, picks will be made live by all 32 Clubs in their local markets at special locations of their choosing on Day 3. Clubs will make their picks across the country and around the world from a variety of locations, some of which include military bases, state landmarks, and major attractions. “There’s no better way to bring the League’s hundred years of history full circle than to partner with these communities and recognize their important place in history as part of the NFL’s centennial celebration,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
