The Sursum Corda Award O Alma Mater Fordham Gil Severiano | Administrator of Campus Ministry Operations

Gil Severiano has served Fordham for 18 years. Starting out as Executive Secretary, she has since taken on many ministerial and supervisory functions. “If there’s a Gil, there’s a way” reads a small wooden sign in her office. It is a gift from grateful student interns acknowledging her personal care for them and a testament to the tireless efficiency they witnessed in her handling of office and ministerial operations. Gil is the first responder of the mission hub and triage center that is Campus Ministry. She attends to the intermittent stream of students, staff, and visitors who drop in with every kind of need and complaint. Gil manages to listen to all with a sympathetic ear and, at the same time, serves as minister to the campus ministers. What began as Gil’s side interest in works of charity and community outreach has developed into a full-blown passion for social justice. Gil has been at the forefront of organizing anti-racist training and teach-ins for justice. She has built strong relationships with Bronx community service organizations as the prime mover of the Pedro Arrupe Volunteers. It is evident that Gil’s personal satisfaction and exceptional dedication to Fordham’s life and mission are a matter of vocation, not just career. We are grateful to Gil’s family for sharing her with us to lift up our hearts!
