Steve Squyres knows how to render scenes and intricate technical detail to build tension, without losing sight of the thrill and grind of the groundbreaking work. “Eleven years had passed since I had started trying to send hardware to Mars, and in all that time I hadn’t seen a single plan for Mars explo- ration survive for more than about eighteen months before there was some sort of cata- clysm,” writes Squyres. Searching for Diffuse Light in the M96 Group

Feldmeier2 Draft version June 30, 2016 ABSTRACT We present deep, wide-field imaging of the M96 galaxy group (also known as the Leo I Group). Down to surface brightness limits of µB = 30:1 and µV = 29:5, we find no diffuse, large-scale optical counterpart to the “Leo Ring”, an extended HI ring surrounding the central elliptical M105 (NGC 3379). However, we do find a number of extremely low surface-brightness (µB & 29) small-scale streamlike features, possibly tidal in origin, two of which may be associated with the Ring. In addition we present detailed surface photometry of each of the group’s most massive members – M105, NGC 3384, M96 (NGC 3368), and M95 (NGC 3351) – out to large radius and low surface brightness, where we search for signatures of interaction and accretion events. We find that the outer isophotes of both M105 and M95 appear almost completely undisturbed, in contrast to NGC 3384 which shows a system of diffuse shells indicative of a recent minor merger. We also find photometric evidence that M96 is accreting gas from the HI ring, in agreement with HI data. In general, however, interaction signatures in the M96 Group are extremely subtle for a group environment, and provide some tension with interaction scenarios for the formation of the Leo HI Ring. The lack of a significant component of diffuse intragroup starlight in the M96 Group is consistent with its status as a loose galaxy group in which encounters are relatively mild and infrequent. -

Momjian (Arecibo Observatory) ABSTRACT: The Leo region offers a detailed view of several nearby groups Points of Interest in the Leo Region of galaxies including Leo I at 10.4 Mpc and another slightly more distant (10h30m<RA<11h30m, 8º<dec<16º) structure within the Local Supercluster (Leo II). Leo I is of particular interest because it contains both a large ring of intergalactic gas of unknown origin (the Leo Ring) as well as a long tidal stream of stars and gas in the Leo Triplet. Because of its proximity, Leo can also offer insight M66 into the nature of low-mass, low-surface brightness galaxies believed to be the building blocks of galaxy formation. A direct comparison of optically and HI selected samples of dwarf galaxy candidates in the region has been made. This work has been supported by NSF grants AST-0307661 and AST--0435697 & by the Brinson Foundation. NNGGCC 3 6326828 OPTICALLY-SELECTED SAMPLE: Dwarf galaxy candidates in the Leo region were optically selected via a visual inspection of POSS-II/ESO/Serc plates by Karachentsev and Karachentseva. Sensitive, targeted single-pixel Arecibo Leo Ring of M65 gas in M96 group observations were taken of those candidates. By: Taylor Hill February 19, 2019 This past December, a parent’s greatest terror visited robotics engineer Neil Abcouwer. “It was an RDO Friday, and I was at home with my wife and our son, who’s less than a year old,” Abcouwer remembers, “Milo was taking his bottle like he has a hundred times before, but something went wrong, and he started choking.” In an instant, Milo was red and struggling to breathe. Neil’s wife Aurelia called 911. Neil had taken the Lab’s CPR course just weeks before. His training kicked in, and he immediately began the infant choking protocol he had practiced at JPL. Universe | March 2019 | Page 1 “It’s like a different version of the Heimlich maneuver,” Abcouwer said. “Based on what I remembered from the class, I took him and held him between my arms, belly down over my knee—head lower than his body—and gave him five backslaps. Then I flipped him over face up and started five chest compressions, similar to what you would perform for infant CPR.” Abcouwer repeated the protocol for an excruciatingly long minute before Milo was able to clear his throat. By the time the paramedics arrived, Abcouwer said Milo was breathing normally and happy again. CPR training class. “We took him to the emergency room just to be safe, they checked him out and he was all good,” Abcouwer said. It is still under debate where this H i ring originated - whether it has formed out of the gas remaining after the formation of a galaxy group (primordial origin) or been stripped during galaxy-galaxy interactions (tidal origin). We are investigating the optical and H i gas properties of the dwarf galaxies located within the gas ring in order to probe its formation mechanism. -

NNASA’sASA’s LunarLunar ScienceScience InstituteInstitute BeginsBegins WorkWork It has been 40 years since humans fi rst set foot upon the Moon, taking that historic “giant step” for mankind. Although interest in our nearest celestial neighbor has waned considerably, it has never disappeared completely and is now enjoying a remarkable resurgence. The Moon was born when our home planet encountered a rogue planet at its birth, and has since recorded the earliest history of the solar system (a record nearly obliterated on Earth). With four spacecraft orbiting the Moon in the past three years (from four separate nation groups) and a fi fth, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, due to arrive this spring, we are about to remake our understanding of this planetary body. To further contribute to the advancement of our knowledge, NASA recently created a Lunar Science Institute (NLSI) to revitalize the lunar science community and train a new generation of scientists. This spring, NASA has selected seven academic and research teams to form the initial core of the NLSI. This virtual institute is designed to support scientifi c research that supplements and extends existing NASA lunar science programs in coordination with U.S. space exploration policy. The new teams that augment NLSI were selected in a competitive evaluation process that began with the release of a cooperative agreement notice in June 2008. NASA received proposals from 33 research teams. L“We are extremely pleased with the response of the science community and the high quality of proposals received,” said David Morrison, the institute’s interim director at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. -
