We tested this with feeders up to 140 m away from the hive. Foragers of M. scutellaris communicated direction (up to 140 m) more accurately than distance (up to 30 m) whereas those of M. quadrifasciata communicated direction only up to 30 m and distance up to 40 m. Our data indicate that in both species recruitment is divided into two temporal phases. Whereas in an initial phase alarmed nestmates search for food at random, bees leaving the hive in the fol- lowing phase are obviously provided with information about its specific location. As a consequence after 35 minutes (M. scutellaris) and 85 minutes (M. quadrifasciata), respectively, significantly more newcomers arrive at the feeder than at an identical control feeder. Sete regiões do genoma mitocondrial foram amplifi cadas e digeridas com 15 enzimas de restrição. Cinco haplótipos foram identifi cados: dois exclusivos das amostras de Prudentópolis e os outros três registrados nas amostras de Mafra e/ou de Blumenau. We investigated hygienic behavior in 10 colonies of Plebeia remota, using the pin-killed method. After 24 h the bees had removed a mean of 69.6% of the dead brood. After 48 h, the bees had removed a mean of 96.4% of the dead brood. No significant correlation was found between the size of the brood comb and the number of dead pupae removed, and there was no apparent effect of the origin and the condition of the colony on the hygienic behavior of the bees. Plebeia remota has an efficiency of hygienic behavior superior to that of three of the other four stingless bee species studied until now. Abstract Melipona quadrifasciata is a stingless bee widely found throughout the Brazilian territory, with two recognized sub- species, M. quadrifasciata anthidioides, that exhibits interrupted metasomal stripes, and M. quadrifasciata quadrifasciata, with continuous metasomal stripes. This study aimed to estimate the genetic variability of these sub- species. For this purpose, 127 colonies from 15 Brazilian localities were analyzed, using nine species-specific microsatellite primers. At these loci, the number of alleles ranged from three to 15 (mean: 7.2), and the observed heterozygosity (Ho) ranged from 0.03-0.21, while the expected heterozygosity (He) ranged from 0.23-0.47. The ge- netic distances among populations ranged from 0.03-0.45. The FST multilocus value (0.23) indicated that the popula- tions sampled were structured, and the clustering analysis showed the formation of two subgroups and two more distant populations. The first group contained the subspecies M. quadrifasciata quadrifasciata, and the other, the subspecies M. quadrifasciata anthidioides and the two M. quadrifasciata populations with continuous metasomal stripes from northern Minas Gerais. These results confirmed that the yellow metasomal stripes alone are not a good means for correctly identifying the different subspecies of M. quadrifasciata. Samples consisted mostly of tree trunks, which were kept by Meliponinae beekeepers. Nearly 13 per cent of observed nests were in living trees in the field. Seven species of stingless bees, totalling 227 nests, were encountered in 12 tree species. More than 75.0% of stingless bees were found in two tree species being Caesalpinia pyramidalis (Caesalpiniaceae, 41.9%) and Commiphora leptophloeos (Burseraceae, 33.9%). Furthermore, all bee species nidify in C. pyramidalis. A great part of the nests in trunks were of Melipona subnitida, (N = 130) of which 50.0% was found in C. leptophloeos and 22.3% in C. pyramidalis. M. asilvai was predominantly found in C. pyramidalis (92.3%, N = 39). Besides this survey was mainly directed to bee species with beekeping importance, data shows the huge relevance of these two plant species for nesting by stingless bees in the caatinga.
