He served as Chief Historian of the National Park Service from 1981 to 1994. After his retirement in 1995, he received the title Chief Historian Emeritus, which he holds to this day. Union soldiers built the Henry Hill Monument to commemorate those who died at First Bull Run (Manassas). For many civil war veterans, this had been their first battle. Intense memories drew both Union and Confederate soldiers back to this scene years after the war. 2011 National Encampment, Reston, Virginia Page | 9 Page 11 of 433 ALLIED ORDERS OF THE GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC 1911 Peace Jubilee Manassas just marked the sesquicentennial of the first Bull Run a few weeks ago. At the same time, it also commemorated the centennial anniversary of the 1911 National Jubilee of Peace. It’s that event that is the inspiration of our souvenir medal for this National Encampment. Fifty years after the first major battle of the Civil War, a thousand US and CS veterans came together for a week-long reunion that took place July 16-22, 1911. A plaque at the Manassas Court hours says the following of the event: In Commemoration of the Manassas National Jubilee Of Peace —— The first instance in history where survivors of a great battle met fifty years after and exchanged friendly greetings here on July 21, 1911, the closing scene was enacted, The Tableau of the Re-United States. Date: …28/9/2018… ABSTRACT Based on fieldwork with breakers living in New York, Osaka, and Perth, as well from prior experiences within my field of study, this thesis builds on a growing body of scholarship which examines the productions, expressions and consumptions of hip hop culture. This study looks at how breakers—hip hop dance practitioners—work to produce, sustain and transform hip hop culture in ways that are local and unique. It is not, however, my intention to set out a definitive list of good or bad, authentic or unauthentic, notions of hip hop, or to suggest that there is one true or correct way in which to participate and identify as a member of. What is emphasised are the ways in which breakers, through their embodied dance practices, negotiate, express, understand and conceptualise hip hop. The title of this thesis, “Our Lives are Lived in Freestyle”, is a line from a spoken word poem, by a breaker from Texas named Marlon. In breaking, to “freestyle” means to improvise in the moment; to use the tools one has at their disposal to perform and create.

During the 1980s three revolutions took hold of popular music: the emergence of disc-jockeys as a creative force (in particular in techno music), the advent of hip-hop (and therefore of the "rapper"), and the marriage of industrial music, heavy metal and hardcore (generically associated with the "cyber-punk" culture). The idea of rapping was imported into New York by the Jamaican immigrants, who were already familiar with "toasting" (a reggae artist talking in rhyme over the instrumental sections of a record). Some of them became disc-jockeys ("dj") that traveled around New York carrying their "sound system" to perform at block parties. In 1975 in the Bronx of New York, one of them, Clive "Hercules" Campbell, or "Kool Herc", started making music with two turntables out of breakbeats (the instrumental breaks of a song that focused on the rhythm section, the favorite part of the song for most dancers), while another young black man of the Bronx, Theodore "Grand Wizard" Livingstone was accidentally discovering the "skratching" sound of a turntable.

VOLUME 14 NUMBER 12 STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Innocent on Riot Charge A six-person jury in Suffolk County District Court at quitted Ira Wechsler, Wednesday, of one of two charges stemming from a demonstration in May, 1969, following a narcotics raid. The court's judge cimissed a third charge. Ia Wechsler, a senior, originally faced charges of criminal mischief, criminal tampering, and second degree riot by a Suffolk County Grand Jury, which accused him of setting fire to a campus security car and stoning the security building. Having been charged by Judge Peter M. Nucci to find the defendant guilty if he had acted with intent to create an inconvenience for a person by doing certain acts, the trial jury convicted Wechsler of criminal tampering, but found him innocent on the mischief charge. Jury Selected Attorneys for both the prosecution and defense used three preemptory challenges allowed to them in selecting the jury, as well as dismissing some prospective jurors because of beliefs they expressed during questioning. One man, who said he worked for the U.S. Customs House, was dropped from the panel after he said he saw results of the building being bombed and went through a bomb scare "once or twice a week." Another prospective juror was dropped for cause when he said he believed a self-avowed Communist would not tell the truth as a witness. The district attorney asked one man to be discharged from the jury panel after he told Robert Reiter, one of Wechsler's two long-haired attorneys, "You look like my daughter's boy-friend." All jurors were asked if they had ever heard of SDS or Students for a Democratic Society.

It was difficult to draw that line, to decide which artists to include and which not. Yo Yo, Queen Mother Rage, Sister Souljah, BWP, Conscious Daughters are not in it because they are more 90s then 80s. Nikki D, Tairrie B. and L.A. Star are on the edge, but I included them, because they are more 80s. What I did was to collect all the lyrics and pictures, which I could find and republish facts which are important for making history. I didn’t want to write anything new, I wanted to collect, to see what you can find out (in Germany), if you want to. In the end it’s not much and nothing that was published in the german language. You will find the source material in an appendix, so that you can check out where it comes from and read more, if you want to. Pictures without numbers are from my own record collection. This compilation can’t be complete and some facts will be wrong, but I have tried to make it as accurate as I can.

However, across the country, Métis youth are expressing themselves through hip hop culture. This thesis explores the impacts that being involved in hip hop culture, particularly the creation of hip hop, can have for the Métis young adult participants and the implications for education. It asks how hip hop culture and hip hop pedagogies can have a stimulating effect on Métis students’ educational experiences. The study uses an Indigenous métissage methodology (Donald 2009), and qualitative interview methods along with participants’ hip hop creations – rapping, beatboxing, and graffiti art—to story their hip hop engagements. Three themes emerged: how hip hop can 1) be a vehicle for identity and identifying, 2) build relationships and community, and 3) connect students to school. This study demonstrates the value that hip hop creation and consumption can hold for Métis students, and contributes to the growing body of work surrounding Indigenous hip hop in Canada.
